- Most gimbal bearings come out pretty easy with simple tools. Not this one. After 6 hours I finally got this one to pop out of the housing using every tool I could think of. My normal slide hammer and 3 jaw puller didn’t work so I researched the solution and the consensus was to drill the bearing to relieve the pressure on the outer race so it would come out. The video describes the process.
I just wanted to say that your video is very informative. Mine broke apart in like 10 different pieces, but watching your video made me realize that sometimes you just have to do it the hard way.
Thank you sir for the information. I had the tool to remove the gimbal bearing and it stripped the nut you turn to apply the pressure. I will try this method. Damn salt water!
I have been struggling in the heat for days I wish I can show you a video or video chat I'm sure it's something simple
I had a stuck one. I user my stick welder to cut the outer race
I know it's not related to this video but My steering is locked up mercruiser 3.0 with steering assist Removed Steering nut Steering wheel.
Moves freely. Unhooked.
Outdrive from.
Steering via Clovis pin. Outdrive moves freely as long as I have The big aluminum tube turnt a certain angle. Cannot take entire steering cable rod out of the aluminum tube It's like it's getting hung up at the end.???
What was the problem that led to changing the bearing? That looks like a tight aggravating job
And when the boat is underway what kind of force is on the gimbal ring or hores collor ?????
A lot less than a tool would exert. A 5/8” fine thread grade 8 bolt has a tensile strength of 30,700 lbf. Assuming the boat weighs 5000 lbm that would equate to a 135 mph speed after 1 sec which ain’t happening in a boat. The tool would snap the gimbal ring easily at 30,700 lbf.
Aw man I'm in need of your expertise again!! Can I call that number?
Sorry I don’t have experience with steering systems. I would search CZcams for help.
I see you’re working in the sand, I don’t know if I should feel sorry for you or be jealous
There isn’t an ocean within 300 miles so you can feel sorry for me. I live just south of the fall line in Georgia. There are 3 sand factories within 3 miles. I have to be careful that sandstorms don’t get sand inside my boat engines.
