Wonka was just a good movie with great visuals, memorable songs and a good story about an underdog who was likeable and someone we could root for, coming out on top in the end despite all the adversity put before him. It was a wholesome and fun flick complimented with a great cast.
Could it just be as simple as Wonka being a far better movie?
Crazy we live in the world where WB’s only massively profitable movies this year were Barbie and Wonka

it is simpler than that.wonka is more of a christmas family movie, aquaman wasnt promoted, only some people knew this movie was out.
Thing with Wonka here in theUK it’s the only family kids film out at the moment and my daughter who’s 6 loves it to bits she’s been 3 times and comes out begging to go again, and yes she’s obsessed with Paddington’s too, I wouldn’t be surprised if this has long legs all the way till mid feb time.
Now I'm glad WB moved Dune 2 to this year.

The differences between Aquaman 1 and 2 and Captain Marvel vs The Marvels have more to do with brand trendiness and repetitive marketing than the actual quality of the individual movies themselves. These things were "in" pre-Covid and are now past theie prime.
I enjoyed both Wonka and Aquaman 2. Aquaman is doing much better overseas

Me and the wife took the kids to see Wonka, all 4 of us enjoyed it.
I like John, don't think it's the best film of the year, but I would certainly watch it again, and it's success is fully deserved.
My mom and I liked WONKA. It was good.
I don't see how its surprising. Family films do great at this time of year and Wonka is really the only one in theaters. Aquaman 2 got ravaged by critics and there is no interest in DCEU films. Aquaman 2 is doing ok overseas though. Might make around 400 million WW overall, which is not bad in context of other DCEU movies in recent years.
@nikunjdixit1175 its a conspiracy since in USA they don't want Amber so as well they don't want to show that the Aquaman 2 movie is doing well. in China in its first weekend the movie made $33M but since then they are not updating the Box office mojo.the movie now has about $45M from china alone but its not updated in box office mojo why i don't know,Am in Africa and in my country the movie has been on full capacity since the 20th of Dec up to yesterday 1st Jan 2024.the cinemas in my country where cancelling other different movies so that they show Aquaman 2. Wonka's international number in the box office mojo hasn't been updated too. Same as Aquaman. But per yesterday they've been updated, only the total number though.
This was a perfect example of John's personal thoughts versus actual reality coming into play. John saying " Nobody wanted to see the Wonka Movie. Nobody was interested in the Wonka movie.". This was personal hate towards the movie. When in reality anywhere else on the internet, EVERYONE wanted to see this movie, and everyone was waiting to see it in the theaters. From Dan Murrell to John Rocha, to Jessica Clemons, just to name 3.
Wonka is a movie that was going to have more families and the repeat business which would lead to more dollars at the box office than Aqua-man. This was projected months before the movies went out by industry sources.
I didn't think Aquaman was awful but it was pretty average which might as well be the same thing. Wonka was pretty great, though. I'm not surprised it's got some legs.

two comic book superhero movies that are quality lackluster plus superhero fatigue, and Wonka is an endearing film, which is fun family, makes the movie a box office hit

that's what I was about to say, I don't think it matters to WB since they own both movies and they both have been topping the box office, so I think WB is happy with the results. I'm sure they probably wish Aquaman 2 would make alot more money, but they clearly don't have much confidence in the movie anyway, so I think they probably expected this outcome for Aquaman 2.

While there is no doubt that Aquaman 2 is flopping & is going to lose alot of money, but Wonka still has a chance to make good profit, it has already made back twice its budget, it will probably stay in theaters for a few more months.

Movies live and die on reviews. When you have the ability to check reviews while in the line to buy a ticket you will want the best bang for your buck.
I couldn't give a fig for the numbers. I watch because I want to or not, and not because of box office! Wonka was fun. Barbie was fun. I had fun. If both failed at BO, I still would have had fun. Personal preference and tastes are not relative to BO. 🤷✌️🎬
Funny thing .... Aquaman 2 released on 21st December around and ran for 1.5 weeks only in my area
Aquaman2 2nd weekend only dropped 30%. The other superhero in 2023 or DC movies all dropped over 60% in their 2nd weekend. Maybe Aquaman2 is gonna be able to leg out 500-600 million worldwide. I liked the movie.
It did release over the holidays though. It will probably drop off more now

I was one who thought Wonka would be forgotten but with some movies moving it insted had the top of the hill for itself. Sure Aquaman tried to jump him but Wonka dodged. So hey suprise hit, congratulations Wonka. The most christmast like movie of the year. Usually Wish would have filled that but sadly I see no intrest for it in my country. We got Bamse.

so it is fair to ask how does it fare as the last DCEU, because that's what it is. them wanting it to be or not.
I think it has to do with word of mouth on both ends, Aquaman took the #1 spot on it’s weekend because it’s a big comic book movie, but not only did word spread about Aquaman not being liked by a lot of people but at the same time word spread about how many people were loving Wonka, and so in my opinion had it not been for the general status quo of big comic book movies always being #1 on their opening weekends this is the order they would’ve originally been in had it all been based on general reactions
Aquaman 2 is having awesome hold tf you are even saying? Just compare Aquaman's hold with The Marvels imao. Aquaman is making like $9M per day while The Marvels was making like $1M per day

Bullshit, Guardians did very well. If the other super hero movies were great, they would have made money.
I loved Aquaman and was looking forward to Aquaman 2, however, after the last few years with the Amber Heard mess and the DCEU is dead mess, the movie was cut up and put back together a bunch of times. Cameo's were added, the cameo actors changed, the cameos removed, the cameos changed, etc. Amber was in, Amber was out, Amber was back in, then out again. I assumed that this movie would be a total mess and when reviews were finally came out they confirmed it. I will wait a short period of time and watch it for free on streaming.

Dude no serious person will watch the Marvels or Bad CGI Man talking to fish. Wonka is just a good family friendly movie.
I hope James Gunn doesn’t do a DCEU. For the love of God, make Superman Legacy its own thing like Joker and The Batman are doing. Take it in a familiar, but yet different direction like those 2 other franchises are doing. Make it its own thing, and take time making it. Don’t just slam a comic book movie down our throats every year with the same origin story/formula. It’s too much redundancy. Make it feel like it’s own mini event. Something to look forward to. If The Batman drops a trailer with Clayface and Mr.Freeze in it this year (2024) and then tells us we have to wait a year and a half to see it, I will be so happy. I’m fine waiting 3-4 years to see a comic book sequel. As long as it’s in the right hands and the wait is because they are crossing all the T’s and dotting all the I’s. Let’s go back to making quality movies. Not just wash, rinse, and repeat and having to connect everything or shoe horn in a story line for a spin off.
Well Superman Legacy is suppose to be the start of a new DC cinematic universe, so it's basically going to be like DCEU and MCU, the only difference I think is that with James Gunn at the helm he will focus more on quality and making the new DCU more consistent and cohesive, which the old DCEU was not. The problem with many of Zack's movies and style is that he is all about spectacle and no substance.James is a much better filmmaker and storyteller than Zack so I think with James in charge we will probably get better quality movies with more substance and that's all that matters to me.

@charleyzacharia9878 I just mentioned the ones that came out this year that were a success, whether or not they make over a billion is irrelevant as they still made a profit.
But the reason why they don't make a billion isn't because people are tired of superheroes, it's because they are more wary about the films after being let down too many times.
Just look at the state of the DCEU, that universe hasn't made them money since Aquaman in 2018, that's not because of superhero fatigue, that's because they put out so many bad films in a row that people just gave up.
As soon as we get consistent quality films, people will come flocking back. Which I'm optimistic it will, James Gunn is heading a new take on a new DCU with a clear plan, and Kevin Feiges got back full control and is making changes for better things to be produced.

Aquaman was US number 1 last weekend on Fri, Sat and Sun, before The Color Purple took over the spot on the Christmas Day (the day it's debuting).
