    I'll tell you what went wrong: they needed to make better movies! The first one was mediocre, the second one was a gawd awful mess, and I didn't even bother with the third one!

    I think they should have gotten JK to write out the series as novels first and then had them adapted to movies because I find everything wrong essentially stemmed down to the lack of polish that they would have gotten from novels over rushing to get movies out.

    Whether you like JK Rowling or not, one person who absolutely has to go is David Yates.
    To be fair, he’s not an awful director (although, dear lord, the way he lights his scenes is dreadfully dark) but compared to Chris Columbus and Alfonso Cuaron, he has one of the most boring and flat directorial styles in the industry. Again, he’s not bad, he gets the job done, but there’s nothing exceptional or interesting about his direction. Every scene is just the most utilitarian, basic, functional version of that scene. There’s little to no attempt to elevate the story on a visual level.
    This guy has made seven wizarding movies, if this franchise has to continue, please let it be someone's vision.

    The Fantastic Beasts franchise is a mirror image of Prometheus/Alien Covenant; both started out with the intention to do their own thing with new characters in the same Universe as HP and Alien respectively. But after the first films, they switched track and became de facto prequels to the established older films instead. Prometheus' protagonist was even killed off-screen between films, so she could be replaced by a more Ripley-like character in Covenant.

    • @SnoTangerine
      @SnoTangerine Před 7 měsíci

      It's a very weird trend, especially because Fantastic Beasts 1 and Prometheus were plenty successful without being direct prequels. Has similarities to the DCEU's pivot as well. Studios don't know what they have, I guess.

    I was frustrated that they veered away from showing the Fantastic Beasts, because I thought that was the 1st films strength. I do also agree with Kris that we should've explored more of the Wizarding World. What better way to expand the world of Harry Potter then with another school? Its a place familiar to fans (ie a school for wizards) but unknown since its a brand new location in The U.S.A.; that way the series continues with the various schools being the anchor points or the familiar places for fans, just the location every few films or something and play in that country for a while and tell whatever story you want/need to.

    I really love the first film, but these characters just don't really have a lot of appeal for general audiences and they don't really lean into the magical aspects of the world as shown in the Potter films. I love Newt, but I understand why an antisocial adult who doesn't have the same appeal as a teenage boy becoming part of this magical world and interacting with a colorful cast of characters.

  • @Cinephileofmany
    @Cinephileofmany Před 8 měsíci +2

    Would have been better if the first film had nothing to do with Grindlewald and they just kept it a bit lighter and playful. There was no need to transfer the darkness of Deathly Hallows onto the Fantastic beasts film. Really need to give someone else a go at directing this franchise. I find David Yates to be tepid.

  • @darklord7289
    @darklord7289 Před 8 měsíci +1

    What really went wrong with these movies is that they overlapped 2 interesting stories together that had no business overlapping.
    Taking a small scale movie with Newts Scimander and friends releasing fantasy based animals in american wilderness while meeting up with Dumbledore is a interesting idea , but when it overlapped with the drama of Dumbledore vs Grindelwald it just had no business being there.
    Not to mention we often stay too long within the talent and same crew are there but they become mentally drained (MCU), studio interference (Dark Horror series : Tom Cruise Mummy movie, They're own agenda's written in (SW Sequel trilogy , Rings of Power) or bad adaptations but enjoyable movies (DCEU, The Hobbit Movies, Jurassic World)The studio executives only care when it hurts them financially rather than with a good story and talented people who they're gonna take a gamble with and start something new and exciting with, newer and clever people .Like what we get
    With Dune pt1 and the Batman (both of my favourite movies of each year)

      I agree I have no problem with the first one ending like it did but then newt and co. should've had reduced roles in the 2nd one and Dumbledore and grindlewald should've been the focus from there on out. Also the first one should've been called fantastic beasts and where to find them. The 2nd one should've just been crimes of grindlewald no fantastic beasts branding. Etc

  • @nixequestrian3721
    @nixequestrian3721 Před 8 měsíci +1

    The problem for me is it didn't feel like the HP verse much at all, so I tend to agree with your thoughts for the mpost part- enjoyable movies, but they obviously just were not what the majority expected- kind of like picking a fancy wrapped chocolate truffle out of a box but upon unwrapping it, finding it is a chocolate coated almond instead.
    I also agree that the 90 degree turn for the 2nd movie away from the established fantastic beasts theme & into heavy Dumbledore/ dark arts theme didn't do the frasnchise any favors.
    Personally, I think they should have either finished the fantastic beasts story with a second movie if that was the plan or left it as more of a stand alone movie & instead of the second movie, it should have been replaced with a movie beginning the Dumbledore's series.
    Like millions of others, I'm enough of a Potterhead that I would have consumed both stories, but I really didn't enjoy the obvious midstory change in direction almost entirely away from the characters & theme that the movies were clearly marketed & branded as.
    This is admittedly super nit picky- but for a society which still had enough witches & wizards wearing cloaks or robes as their everyday clothes to the point that during Harry's time (in the 80s & 90's), Harry & even muggles like Vernon noticed & commented on them, there was a decided lack of magical clothing of any sort during these movies- it was more dapper suits & dresses as far as the eyes could see in most the movies, which meant they needed other ways to ground & focus the magical community from muggles, but aside from some magic infused twigs, there wasn't much if any of that present.
    Having said all the above, I do hope we get more HP verse movies in the not-to-distant future- I'd be down for even standalone movies set in different parts of the world either via the schools, work or just dumb bad luck with getting caught up in some big event because they happen to be in the wrong place at the wrong time (or right place at the right time lol)

    There was so much outside factors that resulted in this poor box office, it’s such a shame. First of all, so much of the prejudiced and not objective reviews of the last movie which were based on outside controversies and not on the quality of the movie. The movie was treated as a bad one while in reality it was good, and personally I agree with John, I think the overall story was becoming better and progressing. But the reviews were mostly negative, unfairly so. It was difficult to find a good one.
    Then of course there was hardly any promo campaign for the movie, literally with minimum interviews and expenses. It seemed to me like WB gave up on it right away and they were just trying to keep their losses to the minimum.
    If only FB had better promotion and better, objective reviews, then even with all the controversies I’m sure it could’ve made a 500 millions and then it wouldn’t have been considered a failure.
    It’s sad how this franchise is treated as one, while it’s actually quite good. Jude Law is perfect as Dumbledore, and the entire cast is great. These movies could’ve been better, yeah, but they were still done quite well.

    Honestly, they got unlucky. Ezra Miller, Johnny Depp, JK Rowling, and other drama kind of doomed the series to begin with. I suppose now there is no deadline for a great story, however, so if they do another one it's bound to be at least decent.

    They also spit on what was established canon. McGonagall was not a teacher during the timeframe of these films. She hadn't even been a student yet. Dumbledore didn't teach DADA, he taught transfiguration. They just chucked everything established in Harry Potter and threw it out of the window.

      Ok number one. Minerva’s age was determined by fans and wasn’t canon and Dumbledore is one of the most powerful characters in the series, he can teach more than one subject. This was blown way over the top by people who WANTED to find a reason to hate this franchise. Nothing that actually mattered for the plot was changed.

    I think the problem with not just fantastic beasts but the wizard ding world in general is that it just isn’t targeted towards hardcore fantasy nerds in the same sense as say lord of the rings, GOT, the elder scrolls, the Witcher etc. All those other properties practically take place in the dark ages/ Viking era and are largely inspired by Norse mythology. Wizarding world doesn’t have any of those things and so I think most fantasy nerds like me never grew super attached to fantastic beasts or Harry Potter in general

    What went wrong is that what works for novelization dors not work for the screen, and adaptations need to be very loose, and emphasise more on visual cues, or implicit cues. Donʼt treat the audience as dummies who need to be delivered lines of plot exposition.
