      This is a fantastic analysis but Half Blood prince is definitely not a rom-com lol. It has a ¨love relationship¨ aspect to it but the whole plot is much darker in my opinion. I´d say its more of a ¨spy¨ or detective film, maybe even noir. Magical noir if you could say that (? haha

    Prisoner of Azkaban will always be my favourite. Its the most beautifully directed and entertaining of the bunch; a much more relaxing, kickback style of film rather than anything heavy. Which is something the books are like, since they show a lot of, well just school life in hogwarts, and this is the only film that properly replicates that.

    • @mannymattina3792
      @mannymattina3792 Před 2 lety +2

      I can see why and it is impressively made. What holds it back for me are 3 things:
      1. I find Alfonso Cuarons direction to be very pretentious (a problem I have with most of his films).
      2. I never liked the colorless look and visual changes (continuity errors) from the first two films. The overuse of CGI also always bothered me since the first two made great use of practical effects.
      3. The forced comedy (i.e the knight bus scene) and overall adaptation changes from the book that were for the worse in my opinion, such as the shrieking shack sequence.
      Overall the brilliant filmmaking and parts that arr well adapted from the book make it one of the better films, but I always felt Chamber of Secrets was the best in terms of atmosphere, look, and effects as well as just being closest to the books

    • @astelevey
      @astelevey Před 2 lety +4

      @@mannymattina3792 CoS is definitely the best adaptation in terms of keeping things the same, I also agree in its quality of atmosphere (a big reason I prefer it over PS). I would argue that the colourless theme to it matches the shift in tone of the series - even tho that would technically start in GoF - I think the idea of soul sucking creatures and the idea of a serial killer chasing down a child makes the atmosphere much more deserved

Such a beautiful moment of one best friend comforting another and forgetting, just for a moment, that they’re on their own in the middle of a horrible war. My ranking as a lifelong Harry Potter fan
    11: Secrets of Dumbledore - I know a lot of people are saying this is the best in the franchise, but I real don’t think so. While it’s more coherent than Crimes of Grindelwald, everything in the film is just so extremely convoluted, and they introduce a lot of new magic that raises a lot of questions for later in the timeline (why does nobody ever use that pocket dimension Dumbledore keeps using in that movie)
    10 - Crimes of Grindelwald
    9 - Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them (I’d like to say that the gap between the first Fantastic Beasts film and the others is to indicate a huge difference in quality. This one was closer to the quality of the original films for me.)

    haven’t seen secrets of dumbledore, hoping to see it soon tho!
    10. crimes of grindelwald - not really a surprise, imo the only wizarding world film that’s not great.
    9. sorcerer’s stone - i love this movie even if i have it placed this low (every movie from here and above is a 9/10 or higher), i appreciate the world building and i think it nailed the set up for this world, but the actual plot feels like an afterthought.
    8. fantastic beasts 1 - it’s prolly sacrilege to put this above SS, but i think it flows just a bit better. def doesn’t capture the magic of the HP films tho.
    7. chamber of secrets - def flows better than the first one because it doesn’t need to set up the world, and i love the faithfulness to the book. i just think it’s way too long esp considering that this is the second shortest book.
    6. goblet of fire - definitely one of the weaker adaptations in the series, but i really enjoy the core storyline about the tournament. i wish they had integrated more of the mystery that was present in the book.
    5. DH part 2 - great payoff for the series, it’s just not as rewatchable as the other films because it’s just payoff and not really any setup. it also feels the least complete of the harry potter films, because, obviously, it’s a part 2.
    4. prisoner of azkaban - the “low” placement of this one is probably gonna get me attacked 😬 it’s definitely one of the best HP films technically, but also doesn’t flow that well for me personally. i think this and the top 3 are all 10/10’s tho.
    3. DH part 1 - i really appreciate that this film is more character-focused than a lot of the other films. i recognize that other people find it boring but for me i find this film to be tension-filled and exciting.
    2. half-blood prince - this is my favorite book in the series, and even if this film is a poor adaptation, i think it still manages to be a great film with the changes that it made. definitely would have appreciated if they put more of voldemort’s backstory, but i like the film we got.
    1. order of the phoenix - i think this film succeeds as both an adaptation of the book and as a movie. everything about this movie shines for me, and it’ll take one hell of a fantastic beasts movie to top this one.

    9. Halfblood Prince - literally no set-up/backstory for Voldemort, why did he choose those horcruxes, what did he do to make them? + so many other questions about him+ the romance sucked
    8. Deadly Hallows 1 - I didn't understand what was going on, what were the horcruxes for? And the deadly hallows? What did Dumbledore know? So many questions.
    7. Fantastic Beasts - enjoyable movie
    6. Goblet of Fire - cool to see that there are other wizarding schools, but what was the purpose of this story?
    5. Chamber of Secrets - very clever with the foreshadowing. Interesting to learn more about Voldemort/Tom Riddle in flashbacks.
    4. Deadly Hallows 2 - Pretty epic finale, but the pay-off didn't land as well as it could've because of the bad set-up for the final battle.

So here is my ranking 11: Crimes of Grindlewald 10: Half Blood Prince (who thought making this a rom com and edgey would be a good idea?) 9: Goblet of Fire (The movie in and of itself is good, but I cannot deny that it was a poor adaptation of the book which the Director admitted he did not read) 8: Fantastic Beasts 7: Chamber of Secrets 6: Secrets of Dumbledore (Mads is a way better Grindlewald and Klovis and a huge help in making this spinoff better) 5: Deathly Hallows Pt. 1 (I agree that the narrative doesn't feel complete, but most of the movie is necessary in my mind so I think making 1 movie would have been too exhausting for the audience) 4: Sorcerers Stone 3: Order of the Pheonix 2: Prisoner of Azkhaban 1: Deathly Hallows Pt. 2

    Wait what's confusing about Quidditch? Lol you play until you catch the snitch. Depending on what team has more points you may not want to catch it and instead prevent the seeker from catching it until your team passes the other.

    The Half Blood Prince is probably the only book in whole series where there really isn't a villain. The goal of the book is to show us how the Wizarding War with Voldemort back out of hiding and setting up Deathly Hallows. The book ends with this nice funeral for Dumbledore after a fierce battle at Hogwarts because Dumbledore had Order members present during Death Eaters attack. The movie cuts that really and tries to end with the somberness of Dumbledore death. I remember reading book from Harry POV just the raw emotion and sadness from him during the final moments.
    The Half-Blood Prince movie had a problem with getting us in Harry head because that really what makes the book in my opinion arguably one of the best in franchise because in book Harry is thinking constantly about the prophecy that he is going to kill the most powerful dark wizard of all time or simply die he always known it be him or Voldy but last film/book really solidifies it that he must kill the Dark Lord and well he concern really. He not scared to face him he faced more than enough times at this point but he concern because Voldemort has like 50 years of deep magical mastery over him. When he told he having lessons with Dumbledore private lessons in fact he excited and nervous he expecting advanced magical combat lessons but instead Dumbledore is showing him visions of Voldemort past which Dumbledore went to great lengths to acquire and you see his parents, him discovering he a wizard, him at school, him after graduating at his first job, and him returning after a long period abroad meeting Dumbledore again during his early reign of terror. You get the regret Dumbledore has over Tom Riddle.
    The core of Half Blood Prince is Dumbledore and Harry lessons and movie cuts a torn of that out it really deepens their bond and Dumbledore really while clearly teaching Harry lessons speaks to Harry as an equal and peer he genuinely curious over Harry thoughts about Tom Riddle origins and enjoys theorizing with Harry like an intellectual because Harry only person alive besides himself who understand Voldemort on a human level so it makes Harry incredibly valuable trying to discover the Horcruxes Voldemort made.

    @Sean Chandler Talks About As a huge fan of the franchise and the books, they had to split the last movie to two parts, because the book has so much detail, and it's impossible to put a 700 page book into one movie, and the movie would be like 4 or 5 hours long if they did that. I didn't mind the cliffhanger, since I know what happens in the book, so the hype for the final movie was worth the wait. Also, the first half the movie is setting up for the big finale, so it's supposed to have a massive cliffhanger. So, since you haven't read all of the books, I understand your point, but the last movie needed to be in two parts instead of one. Also, the color grading for Half Blood Prince wasn't that bad, the cinematography is really beautiful to look at, and the way it looks in the movie, it was kind of described in the book.
