- 2.0 3S-FE Timing belt install. Off camera I tripled checked the timing marks and they were correct. Part of the video shows what appears to be the cam going out of alignment but it didn't .
I installed a gator back timing belt 15+ years ago on this car and it finally gave out, Now that is some great quality!!! I am sure the dura crap belt I installed will not last more then 6 years. - Auta a dopravní prostředky
I just had a timing belt go out on a 91 toyota celica, this video might have saved me quite a bit
I've done several 2000 n up corolla belts. just got a call to do a 91. good video. very informative
Thanks for the video. I'm looking at a 1990 Camry with the 4 cyl to buy and this gives me an idea of the work involved to change the belt.
You can save time by making installation marks on the old belt and sprockets, then transferring these marks from old to the new belt (when original belt is not broken!)
You can use one of those small round mirrors on the end of a telescoping handle (Harbor Freight has them) and a small flashlight to see the timing mark on the block through the hole on the camshaft pulley. See the video at 6:10 where he pokes a little pin thru the hole to locate the indent mark on the block.
Thanks for the video Ray, my timing belt just broke on the 118 freeway in porter ranch.😥
Great idea using the piece of rod to line up the camshaft pulley with the indentation in the valve head. You asked for other ideas, and what has worked for me (at least twice) was to use a small mirror and flashlight. In my case, I have a 2" diameter mirror, but I imagine one from a ladies' compact or a dental mirror should work, too. It is a little awkward trying to hold it and a flashlight at just the right angles to get a good view through the hole in the pulley to see if it is aligned with the indentation, but it can be done.
Damn 15 years ago for the belt. That is good service.
thank you i was looking for someone with this car with the same oil sweating problem
Nice work. Thank you!.
FYI, oil tends to leak from the oil pump seal which is behind the oil pulley. You have to unbolt the pulley to get to that annoying seal.
I like that Harbor Freight LED. I just got one of those. I hope it helps me.
You have to push the tensioner way down and let the spring extend all the way and then tighten the bolt a little bit.
thx for the video,,,appreciated
Great job
thanks great video!
+Jonny DIY Thanks for watching and your comment Jonny.
Good video 👍
I have one 1991 Toyota Camry .I do change spark plugs and wire in my self .is pretty run know .more power
Good video
At 2:09 the power steering belt is still on the pulley; hopefully it was taken out before crank pulley is removed:)
Can you replace the water pump when you did this at the same time without taking engine out?
the cam shaft pulley moved forward when i was installing the belt., do I just turn it all the way around 1 time to the mark again? or is it two times or?
hello i have a question i have a 88 nissan maxima with the 3.0 v6 and it is an interference engine my qquestion is after removing all the timimg belt covers can i just take off the old belt and install a new one with making sure that no cams or cranks move??because my engine runs great now so it will be just a swap will it bend the valves do i have to realign everything againn? im also changing the water pump and tensioner please answer as soon as possible the car has 108000 the belt was never changed will u also recomend to change it now or wait??
Can i first remove the timing belt upper cover without removing other things?
What is the amount of labor time. I have to do one for a relative and I've read 8-10 hours and that seems fairly high I would figure around 4-5 hours.
my first time on my 3sfe engine took me three days, 24h work... second time, right tools and knowing what to do, took me 1.5h o torn all apart and another hour to put it all back together... only belt, all seals I changed the first time
Excellent video - well explained for a relatively complex job. You made it look easy! One question: how did you support the engine when you removed the right side engine mount?
+T Mukal i'm using the tire change jack with a piece of wood underneath the oil pan
+scose Thanks! Will do also.
Will a v6 be harder to change?
did you have to also install a new water pump & coolant flush?
I have a water pump problem.same year and model..Just my Camry is standard. so I was wondering if the process is almost the same since it's generally the same area of work.
+Steven Valero Same process but you might have a little more work area since standard transmissions are usually smaller.
Does Michelin still make the gator belt
Is the pulley wheel bolt left or right hand threaded, having trouble cracking the bolt loose.
+ArgosWarrior It is a normal R.H. thread as by now you will have surely discovered. A compressed air rattle gun often will not get it. Use 6 point sockets not 12. Some guys have put a socket on it and jammed the other end on chassis ?? and cranked the engine with no spark plugs to crack it. I made a 24 inch ?? arm with a head that had a large hole to accommodate the socket and used the two pulley removing bolts 6mm x 1.0 mm pitch 2 inches long to bolt it to the pulley to stop it turning. The arm end was on concrete floor. Some models have different shaped pulley needing other ingenuity. Then a decent breaker bar with long 1/2 inch extensions resting on a floor stand same height. Needed about 40 to 60 kg of my weight. Best to use a 6 point socket not a 12 that tends to wreck heads on really tight nuts/bolts e.g. wheel hub nut 27mm ?
This car is hard to read marks on cam sprocket. Just like other folks here I had to remove it and make my own marks.
Thanks edone mi car leak fixed
Good.
Can you tell me that piece with the sensors your taking out of the way what is all that called my 1991 Toyota is missing that whole piece.
My Mom's car is a 1990 but pretty sure that was the Cruise Control module he took out after the Power Steering Reservoir.
I HAVE A QUESTION and this expert seems like a good place to start for an inquiry. I have a 6 cylinder Toyota 1991 Camry with 45,000 miles on it (3 of which I put on since I bought it) The car has been a nightmare due to the constant overheating since I got it, but it runs well with pickup & go, despite horrible mileage, so I'll endure it as long as possible since my finances are low.
My question is: A new quandary arose this weekend. When I got back in the car (after filling with gas) I noticed on the dashboard the "D" light wasn't lit on the gear indicator area. Instead a new light beneath the "D" appeared for the first time. The orange light read "PWR" (obvious for "power"). I have no clue what this indicates. The other lights are normal ("P", "R", "N"), but the "PWR" stays on. The car seems to be getting power & even the headlights don't diminish the driving, but I don't want to risk getting stuck somewhere because the car conked out without warning. Is there any way of finding out what this "PWR" light is indicating? Any advisement of information would be most helpful and gratifying., THANKS!
Pwr is the mode you put the transmission in. The ECT control switch is by the hand brake and putting into into power mode makes the transmission shift slower so you build up more revs. As for the D light, it's burned out.
Your overheating is likely to be due to a blown head gasket. 2VZ-FE experiences that a lot unfortunately.
+Christopher Waits Thanks Christopher. Several mechanics have explored under the hood & said they can't figure out why this thing overheats between a 3 & 5 mile drive. They suggested it might be the water pump, but there's no leakage & others do not think that's it. It's costly to have th3ese mechanics take apart the engine & try to figure it out. Oh well. Thanks for your thoughts.

If you still have this car which I doubt.....do a coolant flush and drain...install a new thermostat...burp cooling system..cost 30 bucks or less...will stop most overheating issues!
aye Rae how to line the exhaust cam with the intake cam
thatnineallday u don’t have to they are geared
Did you have to support the engine on that side when you remove the motor mount? Thanks
Yes I did, I used an engine hoist. I can't believe that car actually still runs, the owner would only have me replace the belt but that poor thing needed seals but he was always too cheap to buy them lol. I swear those cars can run forever.
@@RaysFabShop thanks
@@RaysFabShop btw. I have the same car and it vibrates badly at idle. It’s due for a timing belt but thinking it might be ignition related. Any thoughts? Thanks again.
i have the same car but there is oil where the sparks plugs go and when you turn it on it smells different from my other car what could that be
Oil on spark plugs means your spark plug seals have failed. need replacement, not a hard job.
lmao
GEE, @2:22 the PS belt is still on the pulley ....
i own that same 1991 toyota camry dx i paid $600.00 for mine
The car featured in the video is being sold for $500 currently, I might get it as that thing has been bullet proof lol
oil pump ramu
