How to Replace the Timing Belt & Everything Else Involved on a 1999 Toyota Camry

- I would highly recommend AGAINST the average DIY mechanics trying to do this job alone (maybe with a little help from someone that knows more would definitely make this easier). This video is more intended as a video guide for someone with more than average knowledge about cars doing this for the first time. If you feel confident enough to go at it alone my advice would be to make sure you remember which parts and nuts & bolts go where, to take things one step at a time, and thoroughly watch this easy to follow step-by-step guide on how to change the Timing Belt, Water Pump, Cam & Crank Seals, Oil Pump Shaft Seal & O-Ring, External Belts, Thermostat, and Upper Radiator Hoses on your car! Tools Used:
-Pry bar.
-Hood prop.
-1/2in pipe (used as extension).
-1/2in impact gun.
-1/2in ratchet.
-36mm socket.
-19mm socket.
-3/8in impact gun.
-3/8in ratchet (power).
-3/8in ratchet.
-3/8in extension.
-Two different lengths of 14mm sockets.
-Two different lengths of 12mm sockets.
-10mm socket.
-1/4in ratchet (power).
-1/4in ratchet.
-Two different lengths of 1/4in extensions.
-Three different lengths of 10mm sockets.
-10mm swivel socket.
-8mm socket.
-Carter pin puller.
-Pick.
-Air gun.
-Spray adhesive.
-Brake clean.
-Silicone spray.
Anti seize.
-White grease.
-Silicone lubricant.
-Black (electrical) tape.
-Rubber mallet.
-3lb sledge hammer.

-Two different sizes of flat tip screwdrivers.
-Two different types of 14mm wrenches.

-Harmonic balancer puller.
-Dielectric grease.
-Silicone (gasket maker).
-Flush gun.
-Small clip.
-Airlift tool.
Parts Used:
-Upper radiator hose (NOTE: lower belt is shown in “parts” clip but ultimately not used).
-Power steering pump belt.
-AC alternator belt.
-Timing belt.
-Timing belt tensioner
-Timing belt tensioner spring.
-Lower timing belt pulley.
-Oil pump O-ring.
-Crank seal.
-Cam seal.
-Oil pump shaft seal.
-Thermostat w/ seal.
-Thermostat housing.
-50/50 premixed antifreeze/coolant.

I just watched this video after doing my timing belt (my first timing belt job). Glad that you also used an impact on the balancer bolt and didn’t worry about the 45* btc torque procedure on the tensioner. When I rotated my belt and let the tensioner work, my belt was plenty tight. No flutter, no skipping, no issues.

Not sure if this makes a difference to anyone, but the Aisin brand (Toyota's OEM brand) water pump's shaft seal is supposed to be "conditioned" prior to installation by placing either the Aisin seal or entire water pump in clean, fresh water. I believe doing this swells the seal a bit and keeps it from sticking to the shaft. There is a little note inside the box that says do not rotate the shaft until you do this. Who knew?

The 99 5S-FE Camry is supposed to have HOAT (Hybrid Organic Acid Technology) coolant only. You'll get years from your cooling system if you use regular non-HOAT Preston coolant, but using HOAT specifically prevents acids and electrolysis from eventually inhibiting the system. Using HOAT coolant is the difference between doing a good job and a great job. It maximizes efficiency and life from your entire cooling system. HOAT is more expensive and harder to find and it still does NOT mean your water pump seal won't fail, which seems to be a design flaw, sooo... it's your call.

Great question.. Aisin at NAPA... and WALMART OEM...
You may be doing this job over prematurely. Japanese Koyo or NSK bearings are the only ones to use in a Toyota. They generally have the reddish brown seals, not the blue/green seals. Even if you buy a Gates timing belt kit these days, they always slip in a Chinese bearing and they ALWAYS fail earlier rather than later. Japanese bearings are the best.
I guess a trait of a great mechanic is remembering to put everything back they way you took everything off. Lol

Is there anyway to test and see if my timing belt is broken? My 99 camry keeps signaling a bad camshaft sensor. P0340 but I’ve changed it out 3 times. The crankshaft sensor as well. I have a new starter and battery as well. BTW, GREAT JOB!!

Nice work, glad to see that you're cleaning and adding the right lubricants on to the parts. However I am concerned that the adhesive spray on the oil pump gasket might interfere with a good seal.
