I just need to say that I appreciate raw, unfiltered Richard. As massively inspiring as your older videos are, it is a nice balance to see that sometimes even your heroes can be frustrated, vulnerable, feel pain, etc. Thank you so much for putting yourself out there like this! It means more than you know.

Dude, it’s so good to see you making content again. I’ve watched your other two recent videos too and I’m appreciate your honesty in everything. I started watching your channel last year, when my spine suddenly deteriorated due to disc degeneration, nerve compression chronic nerve pain and nerve tremors (all located between l2 and l5/s1). I’m 30 and had to deal with a pretty quick decline in my mobility and even had to give up my teaching career. After some waiting and Battling with the powers that be, I have recently received a wheelchair from the NHS, here in the uk 🇬🇧 I find your content very helpful and I’m hoping to refer to it, as I get used to my chair. I’m a fairly big lass, speak so, learning to do a wheelie, is a little daunting atm, but I know I need to develop the skills, so I can be as independent as possible. I love ❤️ your no crap 💩, straight talking attitude, (I suffer from depression and. I prefer people to be pragmatic and straight with me, otherwise it just p***es me off and starts a downward spiral)thank you for sharing your journey xx

What you're mostly stretching in the first minute of the video is actually your hip, that's important too.
I know that when I don't stretch my hips they get really thight which causes a snowball reaction in pain because first my hips will hurt then it travels up my spine causing back pain and down my leg(s) causing pain there as well.
    Stretch the legs and hips.
I also stretch my shoulders, wrists and each finger individually as they take a lot of strain when rolling.

You know best what works for your body, I do not think an able bodied person can ever understand how your body now works and be able to come up with solutions. Even if it is their career, as everyone is so different.

You are such an inspiration, you really have gone to hell and back with your health.
I really can't compare my journey in any way, I unfortunately have an autoimmune disease that used to continually daily make each thigh muscle to my knees cramp. I was at a point emotionally I needed walking sticks and a wheelchair. Thank goodness for a wonderful gp. The cramps now are very little and can be managed with medication from sending messages to the legs to the cramping legs. But the worst is my legs are very weak and from wearing a mask my bottom sight is gone and I have had some bad falls as I battle to pick up my already weak legs. Unfortunately I had a fall that left 4 fractures in my right wrist this last week , it has been operated on and on the mend.
Thank you for showing true strength and never ever giving up no matter how hard it gets!!!

I have Ehlers Danlos Syndrome as well as a neurological condition, Both stop me from walking, both knees lockout like that when I walk it's so hard to keep my knees from not locking when I walk, I feel the harder I try the more they dislocate and the worse the pain is. My pelvis comes in and out of alignment too which makes it click and clack like yours did I feel like they just don't make supports that correct knees and hips how people that has locking issues need 😒

  • @beanoneya
    @beanoneya Před 2 lety +5

Maybe there's a knee brace that 1. Would keep that knee from hyperextending, 2. Give support as you slowly bend it. Maybe variable support brace with a twist knob or something like that.
Maybe an osteopath or functional medicine doctor? But it really looks like a well made knee brace is going to help a lot.

Yeah I second all the good comments. I found his page after ny accident and related to him because he's not completely paralyzed and the outside world might not understand his fight unless he discusses it, which he obviously does. People sometimes immediately compare to someone who is completely paralyzed, and it's not a fair comparison for anyone. If course their challenges are way harder and we all agree. But our disability is just th as , ours. We have a right to complain and talk about it because in our lives, it's more important as anything and our struggle is real. I thank God I didn't have a complete injury, but it's still devastating and in some way or another occupies every moment. Personally I deal with minor limps and partial use of my hands, so it's barely ever noticed, however, I suffer daily. Even when I go to my Sci doctor, he will automatically say how well I've recovered and when I go into what I'm dealing with, I feel like I'm not heard. No one sees all of my issues with going to the bathroom either,. I wish people would listen and not always compare me to people that clearly have it worse. It's not a competition, it's my life.

And I'm not even talking about his eyes 🤣🤣🤣 specially at the end of the video. It looks like he was smoking right before he started filming and towards the end it started hitting him even more. 🤣🤣🤣 But I'm not saying it is wrong of him smoking weed, it's just its so funny seeing him like that.

I don't have a spinal cord injury but a neurological disorder and I deal with muscle weakness and spasms, so I can relate to this video so much hahahaha
Also I'm studying industrial design! And I've thought about some kind of brace that would help avoid locking the knees too! Something similar to what you're talking about. I know it's bad for my knees so I mostly walk with a cane or rollator, but it does seem like something a brace can help compensate for... hmmmm. Would be a fun project to collaborate on!
Also!!!! So good to see you back!! I love your videos and have shared them many times.

What is looks like to me is you have compression on your nerves. I’ve noticed with me if hang on a chin up bar or lay on the floor with my legs bent up and push my legs to elongate my spine I get those same shock feelings traveling down to my feet. I usually work out then I spend a little time stretching afterwards for better results. Sitting to much shortens your muscles and nerves but I can tell you are continuing to recover even though you are told that most sci recovery patients only recover for a year.

What you have there is not only a motor trauma but a cerebral trauma as well. Dude you see it s how our body move, a main problem of it, we are a big pile of different muscles and because of that we have a corticospinal pathways. We have a very crazy system of different postural reflexes which are resides in our brains. We as a species never learned how to walk, run, hold a spoon or even talk. We as a species were already born with a corticospinal pathways which do a lot of crazy move stuff for us

The great part about having access to Richard’s videos is that he is an inspiration, but that’s also dangerous. I’ve had to learn not to compare myself to someone else even with the same exact injury as me, because we may have very different recoveries.
I would suggest focusing on getting better at managing your immediate condition rather than crossing your fingers for a miraculous recovery. (Or any recovery at all)
Also, Richard was hurt 10+ years ago so you also gotta give it time.
