In this episode of Lessons from an Old Quilt, we will look at an old Album Quilt. I am not sure of the name of this block in this quilt, but I believe it is a variation of a chimney sweep quilt block, an Album Block, and/or a Cross Block.

Love these vintage quilt videos. Thank you so much. I really appreciate your attitude toward home made quilts. I am with you on the idea that there are many ways to create great quilts. Hand made quilts are seldom "perfect" but the little oddities made them charming and show very clearly that they are created by a non-professional individual, probably with scraps frpm other projects. Individual makers have quirks and that is something to love about these old quilts. Thanks again!

The very first thing I quilted was a panel wall hanging. I just made things up as I went and it worked, but I didn't know what to do with the edges, so I just folded and sewed them like this quilter did. Didn't know I was using an old technique. Love these old quilts videos!

I was so happy to see another video in the Lessons series!! This is the internet at its finest. I have so many comments. The first, I actually love the rounded corners! I had assumed it was purposeful and wondered what quilting magic had made them. And of course she just cut off the corners, so simple. And I hope you make the Recreating This Old Block video, they are my second favorite thing, and I will sew along with you. My last comment, please, Keep doing what you’re doing!!

I can just imagine those floral prints in big full skirts and the plaids in shirts. I have pictures of my aunts and uncles from the ‘50’s that come to mind when I look at your quilt. I love this series, thanks so much Kris!

@@SewtheDistanceor have a label! A thought just popped into my mind. If you buy a quilt at an auction would there be a diary with information referring to the making? ❤ this series too.
I haven't found that yet, but that's a good thought. If it is an estate auction, I try to talk to the families and usually try to talk them into keeping the quilts (😂). Sometimes I get information about the quilts, but usually people just want them gone. It is sad but true. I am not sure if there would diaries about the quilts just because they were part of everyday life, usually. It was kind of like washing the dishes or cleaning, but I love the thought and I will look for this kind of stuff, too! Thanks for the tip! ❤️
l have a pillow made with scraps from the square dance skirts Mom made for us...believe it or not, some out of feed sacks....anyway, l'm 86 and looking at those old prints takes me back down memory lane. l love your ''dissection'' of the old quilts

LOL! I joke that they find me! But seriously, I am an avid thrifter, yard saler, and auction-goer. That's usually where I find them! I am also have a lot of people who find them for me and alert me where they are. That helps!

@@SewtheDistance omg we were neighbors I'm in east providence. Right next to the carousel where the old Crescent Park used to be. I love the ocean to. But Hubby and I go to Lancaster. Every year. We stay at the Best Western. Across the street from country kettle kitchen. . It's beautiful in PA. If I could live anywhere else I would move there. On an Amish farm. Every time we go there I call it God's country.
It really is a beautiful area! We are about two hours from Lancaster, but our area does have a large Amish population. It is wonderful because it isn't commercialized so all the baked goods are for.the locals. LOL! We love it here and are glad we moved back. We do miss that area, however, especially some of the restaurants in Providence! We REALLY miss Plant City and The Garden Grille since we are both vegetarians! LOL! I am shocked that The Grange closed. Bummer. I was in the Lindsey-Woolsey Quilt Guild in Attleboro. Miss them, too! ❤️
Lovely quilt. Sometimes these get called ‘summer quilts’ as they intentionally don’t have batting. This maker seems to have created blocks from dress making scraps across a few decades: feed sack prints of 30’s & 40’s, some great 40’s & 50’s modern prints…whenever she had extra, she put it to use. I have a Dresden fan quilt my mom made for me from fabrics leftover from childhood dresses she had made for me. Either the quilter or the recipient might have had all those same associations of holiday, school and special occasion outfits.❤

Love it when you find an old quilt. Maybe there is only one of a certain block because that’s all the fabric they had, I don’t believe yardage was bought especially. I love how these quilts were made before the quilt police came along with all their fancy gadgets.

I would agree with you it being a coverlet as no batting.Nice and cool in summer. We don't see that many 50s prints so super cool! Though i was under the impression that a quilt is listed by the most recent fabric? Awesome series 👍💞
Yes! A quilt is only as old as its most recent fabrics. The screen print one has me a bit stumped. I think I mentioned that the quilt was probably finished in the 60s or 70s, but who knows. Sometimes with all my research, I still miss some things. Thank you so much for watching this series! I can't believe this is my 70th Lessons from an Old Quilt video! I grew up in the South with no Air Conditioning. I was taught to make "Summer Quilts" which have no batting & use the knife edging instead of regular binding. We often used old sheets that had stains , cut out the stains & then sewed them just like patchwork. They come out more like a duvet without the quilt inside. Love the pattern--simple, beginner friendly, but with great possibilities. Would be great in a 2 color quilt.

Another great quilt. I really appreciate that you outline the actual block. Sometimes, if you didn't do that I would have trouble finding the block. I have never heard of a Welsh seam before. That was very interesting and something I would never have thought to do. If you are able it would be great to see how this quilt block was sewn. Loved this video, thank you.

Quilts with no batting are called also called Summer Quilts. I'm making one right now.🎉
Thanks! My aunt always called them cover quilts or sheet quilts, but I have also heard them called summer quilts or camp quilts, too. I have quite a few in my collection. ❤️

I absolutely love this quilt layout. I would definitely be interested in a tutorial about making a quilt. I agree that it would make an amazing autograph quilt. I am always searching for patterns as I like to gift table runners that serve as autograph quilts so they can collect autographs of Thanksgiving and Christmas dinners and other celebrations.

Hi Kris. That is an adorable find, and seems to be in very good condition. I can see making light quilts for summer time use (no batting). In the Splendid Sampler 2 book by Pat Sloan & Jane Davidson, Jane did the same block and called it, "First Aid" with similar fabrics. I do not know if she knows more about the block's origins. Pat Sloan may know about the block as well and how to get a hold of Jane. Sandy

I have never heard of a "Welsh finish" around the perimeter of the quilt for binding. That would make sense for some of my baby quilts, I think.

This is a signature block. Used very commonly for churches to raise money. Each family would purchase a block to sign the names of their family and then the ladies would put it together and have a quilting. When the quilt was finished they would either gift it to the minister and his family or raffle it off to raise additional money for the church for a bigger expense like building maintenance.

Yes, the name of the block IS “Signature Block” Sometimes also called an “Album Block” or “Friendship Block”.
The quilt is called a Signature Quilt, Album Quilt or Friendship Quilt. 😊
Not all blocks made in this manner were signed, just like today. It’s a super popular block but most people don’t have them signed.

As for tips on this, it really depends on the quilt, the condition, etc. I tend to start with the most gentle approach first (plain water) and get more aggressive with vinegar, baking soda, and even detergents. I usually only hand-wash and line dry them. Hope this helps!

I wonder if the top was hand pieced first, then finished maybe years later, hence the machine finishing.
Oh, it could be! The one video I watched did say it was common to hand piece a quilt and then use that unique finishing sewn by machine, but who knows. So much fun to think about! Thanks for the idea! ❤️❤️❤️
I think it is from the 1940s . See if you can date the circus print. Good find of this Album Quilt variation.
I agree that the older fabrics are from this time period, but those screen-printed prints I think are older. Maybe they were add later? I am still looking for that circus print. Someone here in the comments suggested it may be from feed sacks, but I couldn't find it in my research. Still, maybe it wasn't as popular? If you find anything out about it, please let me know. I wonder if Barbara Brackman book lists this block? I don’t have the book because the blocks haven’t any measurements and I’d be lost trying to size the pieces of more intricate blocks! 🤔
I couldn’t find it in her books either. ☹️ I have looked everywhere I could think of, even doing a Google Lens search. I can’t imagine it’s a block that hasn’t been identified before, because I honestly don’t think there are any new blocks out there. Hmmmm. If you come across this block, please let me know. ❤️

I just found it in Maggie Malone's 5500 Quilt Block Designs, 2692 Red Cross, NP
The maker has set it enpoint by cutting the corners off and adding setting triangles to each block and then added the alternate plain blocks. They could have achieved the same effect by adding the alternate blocks first and then turn the whole top enpoint.
I saw that one, but there aren't any triangles in it. This one has many triangles. Thank you for looking, however!
But there are two sets of a quarter square triangles in this one. I am in the process of making a tutorial. More to come!
My pet peeve is that directional fabric HAS to be a positioned a certain way. Why? Other than a panel quilt or a signature quilt, quilts should be seen the "right way" by anyone seeing it from any angle.

Put Peroxide on it then wash it
I haven’t tried that yet. Thanks for the tip. I have my own mix that I use to clean antique and vintage quilts, but I haven’t used peroxide on them. Do you have good luck with it?
