    Great detective work on the 1,936 pieces (1936). That you put that together kind of blew me away! I thought the same about the back looking like a starry night - it's another wonderful quilt and I'm wondering about hand-piecing now! Thank you from London! x

    That’s a gorgeous quilt. I can’t even imagine cutting all those tiny squares with scissors! And all the different pieces of fabric, from different florals, to plaids etc. Would have taken forever to cut to sort, let alone stitch by hand. What a treasure. 💕🇦🇺

      I know, right? Can you imagine? I think that is part of the charm, especially as makers looking at something like this. We know how special it is! My guess is that the blocks were pieced over time, as scraps become available, hence the 'themes' of the different blocks.

    What a wonderful quilt :)
    In regard of finishing started projects... I got some old fabrics from my aunts friend who used to start quilting but did not stay with that hobby. There were a lot of christmas fabrics already cut in roughly 1 5/8" strips. She also had diamond shapes for lemoney star blocks. I took all the precut fabrics (cut with scissors and not very evenly) and started the throw all the christmas fabrics in. Now I'm near to finish the top and am wondering how to quilt it. When it's finished, I'll give it back to my aunts friend and hope she'll enjoy it as much as I enjoyed working on it.
    I believe you love to preserve and make things useable just as much as I do 😊
    Now I'll proceed to watch just some more "lessons" ❤

    Oh! My goodness ! What a keeper . I would leave it alone just repair the binding . My paternal grandma was the quilter. Born in 1903 to a family of 11 girls she always had handwork going. She preferred hand piecing since she mastered it as a child. They wasted not a scrap ! She made a master pattern and then would make a separate cutting pattern each time she cut. She kept shoe boxes near when cutting a shirt or dress. She would go to work in process boxes and bring out a few already cut. Then she would start cutting pieces for each pattern box from largest to smallest ( of the remnants). If one box was near the amount necessary to piece , she would focus on that one. Floral and pastels for a girl quilt plaids n shirtings for boys/ men . She always asked what color quilt do you want ? Then selected border backing. She hand quilted but could do one in a day by machine using large squares ! She accomplished so much by having everything ready to go when she sat down . She also had pigs chickens and garden . Canned and preserved .I have a couple tops in need of love myself . I do love the oldies the best !

    What pretty a quilt!! I just quilted two quilt tops my husband's great aunt made around the 1930/40's. I've had them in my possession for 30 years or more. I can't even explain how happy they make me feel when I look at all the beautiful old fabrics and her hand piecing. They held up very well over the years and I think they will be around another 80 or 90 years.

    I bought a ‘picnic ‘ basket filled with fabric scraps. Included a huge bunch of 1.5” squares. So sanity went out the window and I started sewing. Really no thinking just tons of chain sewing. Return to present day and I have a large stack of 16”x16” blocks. Only choice of fabric placement is colour choices. I have loved this quilt project. I will go to a lap size. It is a ton of fun.

Not only what a lot of work for the quilter, but it’s like the original-eco friendly- recycling! Good work! 👍 I am trying to make a postage stamp - set on the diagonal, but not a Chandelier quilt - to replicate one I saw in a magazine years ago. 😊 I understand the block, and the setting, but I don’t think I will know how to be very careful of fabric yardage. Nevertheless, I realize that this is something that I will just work on - off and on - for months. 😊

I gently took it apart and made three wall hangings to share with other family members. I used flannel to batt and muslin to back and simple handquilted through the light colored blocks .diagonally.some pieces similar to yours, lots of shirting for the light rows . I guess in the 1930s with the depression on things were tight and maybe the woman didn't have a sewing machine so she sewed it all by hand. Makes us have an easy road what with our rulers and rotary cutters, sewing machines and all manner of handy tools. Might have been a younger family member in the 50s finishing it off after granny started it in the 1930s? I like the look of it.

      I cannot imagine making this, especially without the tools we have now. I think your idea is so sweet--someone saved or completed granny's quilt! What a labor of love! I hope you are doing well! Thank you, as always, for all the love and support for this channel. ❤️❤️❤️

    I wonder if some of those scraps used in your quilt came from catalogs. Sears, J.C. Penny's, and many other company's use to glue samples of fabrics on to pages (sold by the yard) in their catalogs. When the new catalogs came, an old lady would come to our house as ask for the fabric samples pages from our old catalogs. The old catalogs were always put out in the outhouse to be used for toilet paper. Mother would help her pull the pages out. I never got to see any of her quilts.

    • @SewtheDistance
      @SewtheDistance  Před 2 lety

      Ohhh! Could be! There are duplicate fabrics in this quilt, but maybe the maker asked others for their catalogs when they were finished with them. What a great tip! I wonder if that is what happened! Keepsake quilting used to send you samples when you signed up for their preferred customer program. I wish I would have kept them! I am sure some people put those tiny pieces together into quilts! Thanks so much for watching and sharing! I wonder if that is what happened....

    This is exquisite. Is this hand stitched or was a machine used at any time? Either way it is a phenomenal work. I love that it is tie tacked. I have to do that myself because my hands are arthritic. Kudo to the maker. Leave ties in.

    • @SewtheDistance
      @SewtheDistance  Před 2 lety

      The blocks are all hand pieced along with the sashing and corner stones. The binding is done by machine. It is a great quilt. You could make this by machine. I would even be interesting strip pieced. I hope it has inspired you! ❤️❤️❤️

    I definitely would not lose the 'starry night' on the back so would leave as-is. The look like acrylic variegated yarn to me, which may help date the finishing.

    • @SewtheDistance
      @SewtheDistance  Před 2 lety

      Yes! I agree. I think I mentioned that in the original when I talked about the batting, but it ended up on the cutting room floor during editing. :) It was definitely finished later. My guess is it was finished during the quilt revival in the early 80s, but i may have been finished a bit earlier. Either way, the "stars" are amazing. Thank you so much for watching and commenting!

    • @SewtheDistance
      @SewtheDistance  Před 2 lety

      Yay! I am so happy you love it! One way to start collecting is to check Etsy and eBay. You will probably pay a premium, but you will get some really great quilts, too. Also, if you are on Facebook, Facebook Marketplace is a great place to look. I have saved searches for quilts and I get an alert when there is one listed in my area. Again, the prices my be a bit high, but it will get you started. Finally, if you really want some bargains, auctions are the way to go! Check your local auction sites, make friends with the auctioneers, etc. You will start getting tips from people who know auction, including quilts, are coming up. I hope this helps!

    What is the proper size of a single square in a Postage stamp quilt? By the way I Love your videos. If you have suggestion for a quilt using charm squares,please let me know.

    • @SewtheDistance
      @SewtheDistance  Před 2 lety

      Great question! So a traditional postage stamp quilt block is made up of 1" finished squares (1.5" unfinished squares), but this layout with them all being together is still considered a postage stamp quilt. I have even seen larger ones called postage stamp quilts. Those little pieces can be tricky to work with! Maybe that's why they are usually all hand-pieced. As for charm squares, I do have one video up that uses 5" charm squares. It is the table topper video. Instead of making a table topper, you can make a bunch of the block and make a quilt. I will have more ideas coming with summer and fall. I have a few projects in the works and at least one. uses 5" charm squares. Thank you so much for watching and commenting and for your kind words! ❤️

      Great question! I wish I had a great answer! LOL! I have a ton of books on the subject. She is the leading expert in all things old quilts and fabric. I hope this helps!

    Yes, take those horrible ties off! No one would do all of that work to hand piece it and then tie it. It screams that a second person "finished" the quilt. Also polyester batting was later than the 50s.....more llike the 70s.

    • @SewtheDistance
      @SewtheDistance  Před rokem

      Right? I know what you mean! As for the batting, it did gain popularity in quilts in the 70s, but it was available in the 1950s, too. I really wish these quilts could talk! Thank you for commenting!
