    Hi Kris! I always love these 'lessons from an old quilt' videos you do. This quilt is such a beautiful design - I wonder if you could save it by replacing just the center section - appliqueing the new section over the remains? Perhaps same could be done with the border? Anyway, great video - thanks for sharing it with us.

      Thank you so much! Great idea! I may try that, although the damage is quite substantial. I am not even sure the backing could hold it. I have the quilt in my sewing room and I keep looking at it. I am coming up with some ideas as to how to repurpose it or repair it. I wish it were in better shape. Thank you so much for watching and commenting. Great suggestion!

    Thank you so much for this! I have a 20-yo quilt I made as a child and a quilt that I inherited from my grandma that was manufactured but still means a lot to me. They’re both very tattered and I’m more of a clothing sewist than a quilter. This has been SO helpful.

    My great grannies would just make a new top and leave the original quilt top in place. It's always such a great surprise to find the original top as I repair the quilts again.

    That would have been a lovely quilt in it's day, as it is we can only appreciate how nice it would have been in it's former glory. I don't have anything constructive to add but just know Kris that I really enjoy looking at your videos and seeing all these quilts. Thanks for going to all the trouble to bring them to us.

    Can see how glorious this would have been. The outer edge of the design has some life. Personally I would save it in chunks and make more cushion covers lol, but ones that did not get used or continuing with chunky saving, join and frame cos the fabrics are very pretty. I would agree, washing machine death. I didn't realise when I first started out on vintage that these things are fragile, I even bleached lace 🤦‍♀️ I was wondering if the 3x3 patches were EPP, they are perfectly square and matching in seams, fantastic, I love it. Definitely would be saving and framing/putting under or behind glass, with the hand quilted edging. Glad you found it and I know whatever you do with it will be beautiful. Thank you, enjoy the project 💖🐾

    • @SewtheDistance
      @SewtheDistance  Před 2 lety

      Ohhh. EPP would be nice! I could do that! It is funny--some vintage quilts will take the washing and others won't. For the quilt for next week's video, I did wash it because it stunk to high heaven and I knew I wouldn't even have been able to bring it in the house. BUT that quilt isn't tattered at all. In fact, it is one of the only vintage quilts that I own that doesn't have any tears. Weird, isn't it? So I guess it just depends. For this one, I think it was the worst thing you couldn't have done. I hope to save in some way. I keep looking at it and thinking about options. Thanks for watching and commenting, as always! I love hearing from you and I hope you are doing well!

    • @SewtheDistance
      @SewtheDistance  Před 2 lety +1

      Thank you so much! The sides aren't as bad as the middle, but they are still pretty tattered. I currently have it in my sewing room and every day or so I look at it and think about what could be done. I was thinking about a table runner. Maybe even pillows or a tote bag? I am still not sure. I want to save in some way. Thanks so much for the suggestion! Stay tuned! I am sure I will revisit this quilt sometime in the next few weeks.

    Kris I have a Trip around the world quilt made by either my Great Grandmother or Great Aunt it's in beautiful condition but never sandwiched and quilted I was told to leave it and let it live but am not sure about that what are your thoughts. I will try to locate my photo of it too

      What a wonderful treasure! As for what to do with it, I feel it is a personal choice. For me, making these old quilts usable is very important to me. If they are quilt tops, my thought is the maker wanted them to be quilts, and although I am so behind in doing this, I will eventually either quilt them or get them quilted by a longarmer. That said, that's my opinion. Others don't feel the same way. I think you have to ask yourself this: What is the best way to honor the maker? Also ask yourself: Will I use this quilt if it is quilted? I am also a huge believer in using quilts, so if I knew I was going to wrap myself up in the quilt on a chilly night and think of my great grandmother or aunt, I would finish it and use it. I hope this helps with your decision!
      One last thing--don't be afraid to get it longarmed, if you want. They are amazing, too!

    • @SewtheDistance

    I have a quilt in that same condition. I grew up with this old quilt always on my bed. Mine is the double wedding ring pattern. The backing is off white. My grandmother and mom made it. Because of the sentimental value it has to me, I don't have the heart to cut it up either to save it. I just keep on hanging onto it because of what it means to me. I don't know what to do with it either. If you figure something out to save these beautiful old quilts, please let me know what to do. Thank you for sharing your video.

    I've seen where some people use these quilts as a pattern to make a replica. There are reproduction fabric available and if you wish to have a usable one this would work. It's been done by people that wish to show one as a display at museums where the original needs extra protection from light etc.

    So when you say to repair it before washing, what exactly do you mean?

    • @SewtheDistance
      @SewtheDistance  Před 11 měsíci

      Great question! If you want to machine quilt it, I mean sewing up the tears/holes so they don't fray apart like this one. If you are hand washing it, you don't have to worry as much because it isn't going to be roughed up. 😊

  • @SparkyOne549

    I was given a queen quilt by a quilting friend who was given the quilt by someone who got it from someone else. It is all hand quilted and in real bad shape, the batting is unusual but it looks like a type of batting. The fabric is wore out, torn and the batting under the torn pieces is gone. It’s full of stains, but, it looks like the quilt had been in a washing machine for at least 30 years. The binding is also hand stitched and wore out.
    I to, thought of repurposing it, but, I would still need to do a lot of repair. I’m having a real hard time emotionally with it. That someone hand stitched the whole thing, maybe spent a lot of money, and it took many many many hours, weeks, days , months or years to make, that I’m having a real hard time cutting it out to repurpose it. I am really mourning this persons work.
    If I do repair it, I will gently hand wash it in the tub, and air dry it.
    Omg, when you said tote bag, I am crying now. I sat on the floor with the quilt laid out mentally asking the person who made it in spirit what I should do. Repurposing came to mind but i didn’t have an idea because I was so emotional. I now want to make a tote bag out of it, but I’m afraid that the fabric won’t last much longer.

      I can relate so much to what you are going through! I feel the same way with quilt. They seem to talk to me or something (I know that sounds crazy! LOL). There is a sense of the maker in all of the old quilts I work with. Most of the time there are good vibes, but sometimes not. It is so weird! I hope you can find a way to honor the maker while making something that can be used. I often put myself if their shoes--if I made a quilt and no longer was around to use it, would I care if someone repurposed it. I, personally, would not. I would rather see it cut up and repurposed than sit in storage or worse yet, discards. Thank you for your wonderful and thoughtful comment. I hope this helps with your decision. ❤️

      @@SewtheDistance That is so interesting! I am sooo glad I am not the only one who picks up emotions from the quilt and quilters. Amazing isn’t it! I decided to take the best parts of the backing, and top. The backing isn’t in bad shape at all, the hand stitching shows through all layers, it gorgeous. I will use some of it and the best of the top to make either a sewing machine carrier or duffel bag, in patchwork form.
