My SunBonnet Sue quilt that was made by my great and great great grandmothers. It had a blanket as batting. It’s long gone. People traditionally used what they had. I’m a 1958 model. 💙

All the quilts my Great Grandmother made have a flannel sheet blanket or army wool blanket inside, not batting. She told my Mom a quilt that has a blanket makes for a warmer quilt and that the batting that was available in Wisconsin where they lived was not of quality. It requited quilt stitches that were close and too time consuming for life on the farm. And incaseing a less expensive scratchy wool blanket in fabric made something warm and pretty to add to your bed.

I took my very first quilt i made for my son 8th grade graduation -apart some 26 yrs later. And looking back i learned a lot about all things quilting thru the years. But that quilt went to basic training with my son and College. My son has wool and other allergies and the 100% cotton quilt was the best for him. So now he uses in his man cave!!

I’m 54 and have almost the identical quilt you have. My grandmother also made mine and one for my girl cousins for Christmas one year. I understand how special this quilt is to you!! I’m so happy I found you on this channel to help me with repair!

I have almost the same one too. i’m 52. My Grandma made it for me. My 8 year old daughter absolutely wants to sleep with it every night. I plan to just keep repairing it and let her use it as long as she wants. It’s her absolute favorite thing.

Thank you so much. I have a tied quilt that my great-grandmother made. I have no idea when she made it, but it also has a very similar blanket inside instead of batting. It is a full-size quilt pieced with 2.5" triangles, and the triangles are all pulling away from each other and can't really be sewn back together like the last block you showed. I've decided it will never look new again, and I think I'm just going to hand-quilt over the edges of all the triangles....very slowly....

Love this video. I would like to offer one additional fix. I the first method you showed tacking. I would also consider trying the shape and cutting it out from bridal veil tulle and carefully stitching it over the frayed shape with a very fine silk thread using tiny stitches. It works wonderfully. I love Quilt, Love of Quilting, Fons and Porter, QCA, and QNN. I own almost every F&P tool.

Thank you for giving loving credit to tied quilts and why. I was told just to throw away two tied quilts because ' low quality ' not worthy to save. grandmother lived on a forty acre farm and 12 kids.

Thank you! I have two quilts my great-grandmother made and I need to redo them both. Thinking of taking them apart and starting over. Thanks for the tips.

What did you do about the batting? I have a quilt that is so thin at this point, but I'm not sure if I should take it apart.

If in doubt don't do anything! Go and get someone who knows how to do restoration on textiles. NOT the lady down the street who sews. Checking with your local museum might be a good idea.

The hostess legit comes across so rude to the lady that is a guest on the show. Very offputting.
