    Two years later...
    I have spent several hours over the last few days looking for a YT video that will help me! I need to repair some diamonds on my dear, late MIL's star quilt, that will then go to one of my daughters. Two of the fabrics that were used in the star pattern have worn completely through to the batting, and I want to replace them. This playlist on your channel has helped me tremendously, and I feel confident now that I can repair this heirloom quilt! Thank you so much!
    (It made me so happy that you decided to square off the patch in the corner and then embrace the print including the leaf. It makes it so much more deliberate! I love it so much!!)

    Thank you. I have an antique quilt with a mysterious hole in it. I have been pondering how to fix it for a couple of years. I am going to do a visible patch, instead of trying to match the fabric and failing. I will leave my mark. Thank you, thank you, thank you.

    Beautiful work. Might I suggest embroidering your initials and the year in a matching color, unless you'd like it to stand out, on the patch? If this quilt stays in the fam, it'll be appreciated by those who get the quilt later. :)

    Since you have taught me much of what I know about applique I humbly offer a small suggestion. When you have your hole trimmed why don't you take a sheet of template plastic and carefully outline the shape. Then you can use your template to cut the background, batting and patch.

    • @BeckyGoldsmith
      @BeckyGoldsmith  Před 3 lety +1

      HI Patricia: Someone else suggested making a paper template, and both ideas would work. I am not sure why I didn't think of that at least for the batting. But for the backing I would still use a larger piece of fabric to keep the hole and area around it in shape. It might have helped with the top if only to use as a general guide to the shape. But it goes to show that this sort of mending is rife with options! Thanks for the suggestion :-).

    • @robertamavendooglefraggler9463
      @robertamavendooglefraggler9463 Před 2 lety

      I was wondering why you didn't put the fabric and the batting behind the hole, then draw onto the pieces and then make your cuts. It would seem that would save more time than making a paper cutout. Then you could use the back piece as a template for the front piece.

  • @susangrahf1503
    @susangrahf1503 Před 2 lety

    Very interesting. I followed all four and then I was left not knowing what stitch to use on the final piece. I too am not a quilter and have a 50 yr old baby quilt to replace squares which were originally machine sewn.

    • @BeckyGoldsmith
      @BeckyGoldsmith  Před 2 lety

      If you are asking about which quilting stitch to use, you have choices. You can try to match the original stitches, or you can not match them. You can make the mended part stand out or try to blend in. You also have the choice of quilting it by machine or by hand. I hope that helps :-).

  • @robertamavendooglefraggler9463

    Wonderful! Although I was disappointed that the back of the finished quilt wasn't shown😔

      @@BeckyGoldsmith it's okay. This video was still very helpful. My dog tore my comforter in a couple of places because we have a game that we play with him on our bed. It's called 'bed bugs'. He paws at the comforter. Sometimes grabbing it with his teeth, barking at the top of his lungs. Anyways, I've always wanted to learn applique and now's my chance. I've also wanted to learn to quilt so I'll be doing that too. I was going to get rid of my embroidery hoop. Now I'm glad I didn't. I just hope it will hold...

    • @BeckyGoldsmith
      @BeckyGoldsmith  Před 3 lety

      @@karenbess2115 It's not that hard, even if you aren't a super appliquer. Think about it in terms of visible mending... you are sewing the patch to the quilt by hand in whatever manner suits you. I do invisible applique but I could as easily have sewn them on with very visible stitches.
