I love the quilt! I'm glad you repaired an old quilt. They're usually not as precise as most made today. Back then they didn't have rotary blades, quilting rulers and unlimited access to quilting information. They also mainly cooked from scratch, no microwaves, air fryers, etc. Also no robot vacuums and many other modern conveniences. I have a quilt my grandmother made and I need to do the same thing to it. Thank you for taking your time and sharing with us. 🇺🇸
You are so welcome! Glad you enjoyed it! ❤️
I really liked this quilt. It felt very authentic, it was used and useful. It reflected the fabric and taste of its time. I really loved the prints and colors.
It is a favorite, for sure! Thank you so much for watching and sharing your thoughts on this beauty! ❤️
Kris, your patience is admirable. I think the backing fabric is perfect. The flange binding is a really nice touch. I always learn from your Old Quilt videos. Thank you 😊💕
You are so welcome! Thank you for your kind words. I love pulling this quilt out in the fall. It is a family favorite! ❤️
I had to do one a number of years ago for one of the Captains at our Sheriff's Dept. It was from her grandmother done in the 20's/30's fabrics & solids. Fortunately I was able to the those solids easily. I had to repair several scrappy sqs that were worn/torn. I got that done but while I was doing that I decided to take those old scraps I cut away & tucked them inside of the quilt so the original sqs were still in that quilt. The Captain was giving it to her only child. When I had it finished I took it to work early & asked the Sheriff's assistant to open her office. I spread it on her chair & needless to say there were tears at work that day & it was so gratifying.
What a wonderful service you provided! I am sure the family appreciated all the hard work. Great idea with the scraps. I am currently making the label using those scraps, but I like your idea, too! Thank you for sharing and watching!
I enjoy restoring old quilts. As you said, they do that a lot of time, if done correctly.
Love the quilt, but really like the backing fabric. Built finished quilt.
Thanks so much!
That turned out really nice, and I love the back fabric!
Thank you! I love how it turned out, too! The back makes me happy. ❤️
I love the backing you found for this quilt. I think it's very pretty, a perfect match. Oh my the vintage binding is gorgeous. I love it. The quilt looks amazing. I too refurbish old quilts and find it very addicting. You did an outstanding job. Thanks for sharing.
Thank you so much! I love this one! It goes on the back of my couch every fall. I am so glad you love it, too! ❤️
Have some fabric like your binding; leftover from my days of making Raggedy Anns. I have a quilt that my grandma made in the 1940s which needs 2 pcs replaced. After watching this video, I have decided to applique them over the original pcs; they are 2" sq.
The transformation from damaged to nice is wonderful. Keep making these videos ... love them.
YAY! I am so happy you will be repairing your grandma's quilt! It is very rewarding and fun. Also, thank you for your kind words. Let me know if. you have any questions!
I like the fabric you put on the back. It compliments the front of the quilt very well. Beautiful job of repairing an old quilt. I love your videos.
Thank you so much! I really enjoy making these, especially the old quilt videos.
I love the backing and binding your great at matching and complimentary. Love your videos
Thanks so much! I couldn't be happier with how it turned out! It was an amazing transformation. I love the backing and binding, too! It makes the entire quilt pop!
Wow! It really turned out great! Glad you didn't give up on it. Thanks for sharing your journey with this one!
Thank you so much!! It was challenging, but I’m glad I stuck with it, too.
I really love the oldies! So thrilled you made it useable. My grandma made quilts for cover but she made them as pretty as possible. Finished is good. Just be careful washing . I love the slightly puckered look to a washed quilt.
Me too! I am going to wash it today. Can't wait to see it puckered and cozy. Your grandma sound like a woman after my own heart.
Love love love the backing just what the front needed
Yay! So glad you think so, too! I love the backing as well. ❤️
I love it. Thanks for the encouragement.
You are so welcome! I am happy to help.
I like the backing you chose!
Thank you! It spoke to me, and I think it makes the quilt.
Such a beautiful vintage quilt. This is so nice to watch and listen to while I hand quilt! Thank you for sharing this video and your talent!
You are so welcome! I am happy to keep you company.
This is fascinating; I’ve never watched quilt surgery before 😉
LOL! Love it! I have another quilt surgery coming up next week! Stay tuned! ❤️
New watcher here, love everything you did to save this sweet quilt. Thought the backing was cute, not ugly. So nice!
Thank you, Lindy! ❤️❤️❤️ Welcome to my channel!
Oh my gosh… you have The patience of a Saint!! Your work is gorgeous! Great job..,, That backing is beautiful!! TY for this video
Thank you so much! It was a labor of love! It is my favorite quilt in the fall. I alway look forward to cuddling under it. 🥰
I looove the backing fabric!!!
Thank you! It really is perfect for it! I love that Joann's had it!
The backing was a great choice. It had all the same colors as the front. Great job, Kris.
Thanks so much! I just got this out recently for fall. I love how it turned out. It is soft and cosy, too!
You did an amazing job repairing it and greatly appreciate you showing what wasn’t necessary, what you might do differently, but mainly how great it turned out. BTW, I love that fab you used as backing! It’s so pretty! Thank you for sharing!
I appreciate that! ❤️❤️❤️ That fabric is perfect, isn't it? I love it, too.
@@SewtheDistance yes it is!
Thank you so much for doing this demonstration on repairing a quilt. I often wonder how to go about doing that but now I don't have to wonder. Fantastic job as usual. Keep the videos coming!!!
Thank you so much! I am starting my next repair this week, so I should have the video ready in a few weeks. My goal is once a month, but they can be involved. Stay tuned! Glad it was helpful!
Wow! I love this, it turned out beautifully! 😍 Thanks!
You’re welcome 😊 It is one of my favorites!
Really enchanting!
I’ve got a 1930s yo-yo quilt that I literally rescued from the side of the highway.
I really tried to find the owner, reaching out to quilting guilds snd shops, as well as posting on Facebook and Twitter.
In the end, I did some tiny repairs, and now it has pride of place on my home.
I love that you rescued it and tried to find the owner. ❤️❤️❤️ Yo-yo quilts are great, aren't they? Thank. you for sharing!
It truly is amazing! What a beautiful makeover😊
Thank you! 😊
Love your enthusiasm 😀
Thank you! 😁
Wow Kris, what a transformation. I love how you did this, it's so nice. From tired and tattered to Beautiful and triumphant. I actually like the backing, it really suits it and the flange idea just sets it off. I would have looked at the old quilt and said... where do I start? Top job.
Thank you so much! Trust me---there were many overwhelming moments in this project and maybe a few swear words, too. :)
Nice work!
Thank you! I learned so much!
This quilt now will have many more years of usefulness. I like the way it turned out!
Thank you! It is a great quilt. Now to get a label on it!
Great job, Kris! I LOVE the backing...it is perfect for the quilt and will help it to have many more years of use.
Thank you! I love it, too! When I saw it at the shop, I just knew it was the one.
Wow! Great job!
Thank you!
Wonderful. And love the backing !❣️
Thank you! As soon as I saw it, it knew it was the perfect fabric for the back. I love when that happens! Thank you for watching!
I am really impressed with the job you did. I agree that you didn't have to worry too much about flipping seams. I speak from experience. Keep up the good work! Quilt salvage!
Thank you! it was a lot of fun! I am hoping to do another restore soon. So much I want to do! LOL!
Just a hint: Havel’s Ultra Pro Seam Ripper and Buttonhole Cutter. It will fly through the tiny/close stitches in a flash! My go-to ripper. Beautiful job you did. Isn’t fixing or mending pleasant? I just finished replacing the soles on my husband’s slippers with some denim scraps. I’m glad I never throw anything out. But…I wish I had rethought that because I could have done some strip piecing or something neat like that. Oh well. Next time I will go through your videos and find a flashy way to patch my next project. Thanks Kris for your terrific videos. Gail K.
Ohhhh! Thank you! I will check it out! Usually these old quilts are hand pieced so it is a bit easier to repair them, but this was tough! Still, I am going to get one of those. I loved mending this. So rewarding! Denim on the soles is a great idea! Thanks so much for watching, commenting, and sharing.
I'm really enjoying this series. Thank you for sharing your knowledge. Gwen in Wales 🏴
You are so welcome! I am learning, too!
Love the binding and backing! Great job!
Thank you! I am happy it all came together. Thank you so much for watching and coming on the journey with me. ❤️
I think the baking you found is wonderful! You did a great job. Congrats, I think I’m addicted, as well. Am planning some scouting visits to thrift stores :)
It is so rewarding, although I became frustrated during the process many times. I am glad I saw it to the end. Thrifting is so much fun! I hope you find many quilts and other treasures!
Beautiful job, Kris. Me, I wouldn't have spend as much time, would have done the same on the sides and used those to patch, but would have appliqued the squares on top and used a zig zag stitch on the patches. Otherwise, it looks like a new quilt. Thank you for restoring such a vintage quilt, which now looks more modern. Thank you so much for sharing. Again very informative in showing how to restore in difference ways those vintage quilts.
Thank you very much! It is hard to decide how to repair or reuse these old quilts and with each one being so different, there is never a one-size-fits-all technique. I love the idea of repairing with the zig zag stitch! Great idea. I have seen a few done this way, but I haven't tried it myself yet. I am sure I will someday soon. This quilt is a favorite now where it wasn't before. I love that! I can't wait get it out this fall and enjoy it. Thank you so much for watching and commenting! Great suggestions!
Hi Kris! 🙋🏻♀
I just discovered your channel and I just LOVED this so much!🤗❤ I rescue old fabric and new fabric and scraps from thrift stores / yard sales/ estate sales etc. I also rescue yarn and other crafting items. This. is right up my alley!👍🏻🌸 Thank you for sharing how you repaired this old quilt and it bow has many many more years of use and love. I am totally binge watching now. 😜
WOW! Thank you for your kind words and binging my videos! I never dreamed my little channel would be binge-worthy. I am flattered, to say the least! I love that you rescue fabric and other materials. So much of that kind of stuff ends up in landfills. It is honorable! I am hoping to do more of that myself! Thanks so much for watching and commenting. You made my day!
Beautiful, well done sweet xx
Thank you! ❤️
You did a great job! It's beautiful. Now I will watch the original video.
Thank you! I just love this quilt!
Love the backing fabric! Beautiful job. I've rescued a couple of "rag" quilts from the trash. More trouble than their worth.
Thank you! This has quickly become a family favorite. I will be bringing it out shortly to celebrate the fall. I still can't believe how good it turned out. I impressed myself! LOL! I agree--they can be time consuming. I just need more time! 😀
Turned out beautiful!
Thank you! The photos don't do it justice. It is a great quilt!
Very cool! Thanks! 😀
Glad you liked it!
The backing is the perfect print for the quilt. And your flange binding is awesome! You are really going to enjoy using it this fall on your sofa!
I think so too! Thank you so much!
Wow!!!Nice 👍👍👍
Thank you 👍
I love the backing! Beautiful complement to the vintage top. Wonderful story of your rescue efforts. 💙🎉💙
Thank you! It was fun and challenging at the same time. ❤️
Great job on the repair! I had to repair a quilt that I had just made once! It is a process! Good luck on that journey! The backing really compliments the quilt. Thank you for sharing!!
Thanks so much! I love the result, too!
I like the backing and I think it looks kinda vintage:-) And I’m so glad you now have the vintage quilt repair bug! I’m addicted, too:-)
I just decorate for fall this past weekend and put this quilt out on our couch. Love it! i agree--the back is vintage-looking, almost like a 1960s mod print. So happy I am not the only one addicted to repairing these old quilts! LOL! It is so satisfying!
@@SewtheDistance ❤️
I love it!!! ❤️
Thank you so much!
Awesome job, just in time for fall.
YES! It looks beautiful in my living room. Thank you so much!
hello, have you ever used a dental scapel in place of a seam ripper? its great for those easy tight seams. love seeing all these lovely vintage and antique quilts
Thank you so much! Yes, I have! I don't think I had one when I repaired this quilt, but I do now and it is great! Thanks for the tip!
I’ve repaired and finished quite a few antique quilts, I feel the time to make the seams all go the same ways is wasted time. After quilting can’t even tell. I longarm them and no problem if seams are a little thick
That's great! I was worried about the stress on the fragile fabric, but I am sure you are right, especially if you are longarming it. ❤️
Fabulous job
Thank you! I can't believe the transformation, either! ❤️❤️❤️
Beautiful x
Thank you! It just came back to life, didn't it?
Hi Kris, can you give me some help. My sister bought a trunk and there was an old quilt in it. Can you recommend how to clean it? I enjoy your videos. Thanks for sharing them with us.
It is so tricky to give advice like that since each quilt is different. I would start slow with the most gentle process first, like soaking it in a tub with Retro Clean (you can buy this) or even just plan water. But before you get it wet, make sure to secure any holes first. That's how I would start. If it is in fairly good shape, you could try the washing machine, but I would be careful doing that as a first step. I hope this helps!
Thanks Kris I will let my sister know your suggestions and see what she would want to do. I love hearing about your old quilts. Keep it coming. Sew much fun
Great work, Kris. Those look like 1970's prints. Why is this called a "Garbage Can Quilt"?
Many years ago, I was at an estate sale and this quilt was in a garbage can. I asked the person running the sale if I could have it. She said it is a mess and if I wanted it, it was mine, but it was trash. I made a video last November where I deconstructed the quilt and rescued the top. I finally repaired and finished it. I am in love with it now! It is definitely from the 1970s. Love the prints!
Didja ever notice that if something is poorly made, you can't take it apart? This observation is based on years of alterations work and home remodeling
Isn't that the truth! This was a real bugger to get apart, but it did hold it together, so I guess that's good! LOL! We are currently remodeling and are running into the some of the same issues I run into with some of these old quilts--I never compared the two until I read your comment! SOOOO true! Thank you!
I saw your original video last November when I was looking for some guidance on repairing an old quilt. I'm glad to see the sequel. You've done a very nice job on the repair and given me a lot of info for consideration. And I love the backing fabric; it fits perfectly in the theme of the quilt top. Thank you for all you do!
Oh, thank you so much! This was a labor of love. This quilt is definitely a family favorite now. So happy you enjoyed both videos! ❤️❤️❤️
