When we were in lockdown, I started making 8 1/2 squares out of my crumbs, strings and scraps. Making blocks this way is habbit forming, fun, and relaxing. I call it "Mindless sewing." So far, I have 350 crumb/scrapy/crazy 8 1/2 inch blocks made. No two are the same. Each of my blocks have many colors in them; and, I have many more waiting to be finished (because, I always make more than one at a time). As soon as school is out, I'm planning to put a quilt together in the "Lights and Shadows" or "Shadow Box" sashing pattern around 120 of my blocks. Also, I'm thinking of gifting some of my finished blocks to two of my sewing Buddies (to put together anyway they want to)..
Whoa! That's a lot of blocks! I am sure they are all beautiful! Wow, wow, wow! Thank you for sharing this. So inspiring!
One of my favorite things to do. Great tutorial on making crumb blocks from larger pieces.
Thank you! It is so much fun, isn't it? And a little addicting! LOL!
I truly love working with scraps/crumbs. It took me a bit to get comfortable with no having matching seems and/or designs....Thanks for sharing.
I had the same issue when I started. LOL! I completely understand how you feel. Thank you so watching and sharing!
Love this idea!! Thanks so much!!
Thank you! ❤️❤️❤️
Superb video, thank you from a fabric mad person in France!
You are welcome! So happy you enjoyed it! Fabric mad people are my favorite! ❤️
So cool! Can’t wait to start putting colors together! Thank you
You are so welcome! Have fun!
Love it Kris!!
Thanks, Flo! Glad you like it (and watched!) 😂❤️😂
I've been doing the crumb stuff for a few years now and I love it as well. Years ago I got an old 3 or 4 gallon glass jar that they used to sell pickles in the old timey stores and I would just throw my crumbs in there I'm once it filled up I dumped it out and made some fabric
Oh wow! That's a great idea! I am sure they were beautiful to look at, too, while they were waiting to be added to a crumb quilt. Love this idea. Thank you for watching and sharing!
This sounds like a fun project
It really is a lot of fun "making" fabric for projects. It is mostly mindless and the end results are always so interesting. Thank. you for watching and commenting!
I love working with crumbs! It's very addictive, and also very zen! I have two projects that are always ongoing as I make other things. I make crumb blocks 8-1/2" square, using your method, although I don't stick to a colorway - mine are just any old fabrics sewn together and I'm planning to make a shadow box quilt when I have enough. I also cut strips of various widths, 3/4" to 2" approximately, and sew them diagonally to an 8-1/2" tear-away stabilizer square, I use a 1-1/2" black strip down the center of each block. When sewn together, they form an "X" pattern. It's nice to look at all those old scraps and remember the things I made with them.
That is going to be so beautiful! I would love to see it! Email me pictures when you are finished! My email is sewthedistance@gmail.com. And I agree! Crumbs are so addicting! Thank you for sharing this project idea and for watching! ❤️❤️❤️
Watched again, love the crumb quilting. Have not tried it yet !!!
Thank you! It’s a fun way to use up scraps!
Great crumb fabric!
Thank you! So fun to make!
LOVE❤a crumb video!!!
Well done Kris!
Love the yellow💛
Would love to see you
make a coaster
tutorial with this LOL😂
Thank you! I linked the coaster video at the end and with a card. I made them the exact same way. So much fun! I am now addicted to crumb quilts. LOL!
@@SewtheDistance LOL😂
I actually made a yard of fabric from my scraps. I use the fabric for teddy bears. Helps to reduce and organize my scrap pile.
Love this! What a wonderful idea. Thank you for sharing!
Such a great idea. Your coasters came out so cute. Thank You.
Thanks so much! 😊
Beautiful result!! I made a lap sized version last year during lockdown but didn't know it was called crumb quilting, now I can search the name and look at other lovely projects too. Thank you!! x
You are welcome! Also search Mile a Minute quilts. As they say, everything old is new again. We used to make these in the 90s and early 2000s. They are basically the same thing.
@@SewtheDistance Thank you I will most definitely do that! Have a lovely day x
Loved your crumb video!!!
Yay! Thank you!
Fun and colorful crumbs. Thank you for the video.
You are so welcome! Thank you for watching!
I have been collecting scraps for years now and have just about enough to make a table center for my round kitchen table. There aren't too many patterns for round table toppers so I will make my own crumb one. I have a beautiful pothos growing in water in an old jug that I have had for over 45 years, that sits on my table toppers. It always looks so cheery and homey. People often comment on how nice it looks. A crumb topper will look really nice. Just have to find a big circle! Maybe the lid of the plastic garbage bin we keep our cat's kitty litter stored in, with a few inches added around. You have me all fired up for that now.
LOVE LOVE LOVE this idea! And a 45-year-old pothos? Wow! That is incredible! I think a garbage can lid would be the perfect template. What a great idea!
So much fun, thank you! ❤️❤️❤️
You are so welcome!
Hey Kris, I have done two pillow size blocks so far. It is so fun to create them. Looking forward to more crumb blocks as I do other projects. Thanks for sharing
I love this! They are so much fun to make. Thank you for sharing!
My favorite blocks are crumb blocks & have made 2 or 3 crumb quilts. So much fun!
Aren't they great? It is an example of everything old becomes new again. I am not sure how long you have been quilting, but do you remember the Mile a Minute quilts from 20+ years ago? This is basically a cousin of that. And before that it was a common practice. I made a bunch of Mile a Minute quilts but this is the first crumb project I have made in a while. Thanks for the trip down memory lane. ❤️
I make trivets with mine including Insulbrite with the batting. I donate these finished 'mini-quilts' to various fundraisers! Currently though, I'm making five-inch squares for a larger project that will become a quilt also to be donated.
That's a great idea! Thank you for sharing!
Great tutorial Kris. I made a crumb border the other day for a quilt and it looked really nice. My dog likes to take off with crumbs or scraps that fall to the ground too.
That is an awesome idea! Daisy (our pup) sits beside my machine and just waits for that opportunity. LOL!
I recently started crumb piecing. It's so on point for the history of quilting to use what you have.
So true! It is a fun way to use up the scraps and make something beautiful. ❤️
I made a Pittsburgh Pirate Memory Bear a few weeks ago. Had to sew lots of black & gold pieces of fabrics together to have enough fabric. Wish I had seen this video first ... had a tough time figuring out how to get straight edges to sew pieces on. Duh! Now I know. Thx for the education.
You are so welcome! Glad I could help with your next one, perhaps? Thank you for watching and for sharing!
Hi Chris, love your channel! You’re so perky and have great ideas. Thanks for the inspiration ❤️🇦🇺
Thanks so much! 😊 I try to always be in a good mood when I record. LOL!
Cute.
Great video thanks
Glad you enjoyed it! ❤️
Hi Kris. I'm so enjoying your CZcams Channel! I love the variety of content. The videos are helpful, informative and enjoyable. I feel I've learned something from each one. Thanks for all the work you put into your channel!😊
Hi Mary! Is this the same Mary McCluskey from Massachusetts? Thank you so much for watching! I am happy you are enjoying them. I hope you are doing well.
@@SewtheDistance yes, it's me😊. I'm doing well and quilting as often as I can! Like I said, I really enjoy your videos and you do such a nice job with each one. I'm glad you're doing well and keep up the good work!
Thank you! It has been a fun adventure!
Hi I just found this channel and really enjoyed it. I wish though when you showed the coasters we could have been able to see properly and without the next shows episodes in the way. Thank you for the tutorial.
Oh no! I am sorry about that! Some things I can control and some things I can't. Let me see if I can make adjustments to make the ending more pleasant. Thank you so much for watching and for pointing this out!
Put bias strips on the bottom layer. the feed dogs will gather them up just enough. If the bias edge is stretched, raise the top layer of fabric just a little bit to increase the gathering effect. I also like to have just a hair of my bottom layer showing along the seam edge because sometimes off-grain edges will move as they pass under the presser foot.
Great tips for other quilts and projects! For this one, I am not even worried about gain lines at all. I love how freeing it is! It is a great idea, however, for other projects. Thank you!
Could you do more videos like this?😊
Sure! For crumb quilting or for coasters? Happy to do either. ❤️
@@SewtheDistance Any ideas for crumb quilting or just scrappy quilts. If it wasn’t for scraps I wouldn’t have
Okay! Sounds good! I am not sure if you have watched any of my other scrap quilt videos, but I do have more to come as well!
I sew my crumbs on calculator tape and sew the strips together to make Mug rugs, placemats or just quilt squares. What ever mood strikes me.
I have tried this, too! So much fun!
👍❤️😊
Thank you! ❤️❤️❤️
I really like this idea it really is nice looking but I have a question what do you sew on the back?
Thank you! There isn't a foundation on the back of this one. You just sew the chunks and crumbs together. That said, towards the end of the video, you can see that I am squaring up a piece of batting to the same size of the crumb panel. I just layered them so I could trim them the same to make my coasters. Hope this helps!
Kris, Will all those extra seams make the quilt heavier?
Great question! Depending on. your edges, they can be a little bit bulky, but they also seem to "behave" since you don't force them to one side of the other. I didn't have any problems with the coasters, but I can see how this may be an issue. It is something to consider, for sure. I probably should have addressed this in the video. I will in my next one.
The only way not to have use for a crumb is to throw it away..plse don’t do that..textiles have surpassed paper waste in landfills..one thing to do..pack up waste for thrift stores..other quilters will, appreciate it..thanks for a super vid..🇨🇦
Great idea! Thank you!
