      I can usually pick up quilts at auctions for between $20 and $100. I have even bought them at auctions for as low as $2! You never know what they are going to go for. I was kind of surprised this one went so high, but I would have paid much more, for sure.

    What a stunner! I can remember my aunts sitting around the quilt frame with patterns just like this. I'll never do English Paper Piecing because I just don't like hand sewing, but oh my gosh this is beautiful. And I think this quilt is worth a LOT more than $150!

    I have one that is about 45 years old that my grandmother made me. I regret washing it so many times and on the flowers it has some wear. Mine fits a full size bed. My grandmother would be 107 this year. Your quilt is so Beautiful.❤ I would love to have another one but it wouldn’t have the same special effect on me as this one I have. Special memories.

    Gotta love a Grandma's Flower Garden. That one is a beauty ... in spite of it's slant. Every quilt is a work of art ... many hours of work, fabrics, and design decisions. Beautiful example - well worth more than you paid. And based on the effort to make it - really worth much more. Love this series as I have also enjoyed problem solving with vintage and antique quilt tops. Learn a lot by finishing these oldies. Recommend adding a label. Sometimes, I even mention the resolved issues.😂 Imagine that the creators would be pleased with a ‘finish’ whether a relative or an unknown quilter.

I actually just STARTED EPP with hexagons but didn't want to make a traditional Grandmother's Flower Garden because I thought they were too common. I may reconsider that decision. Thanks for helping me see the value of old patterns and that if they don't turn out to be perfect embrace the uniqueness and finish it anyway. I will admit that will be difficult for me though.

    My Mom made hand pieced and hand quilted Grandmother's Flower Garden quilts. No EPP. She cut the hexagons using a cardboard template. She carried a cloth bag around with her and did a couple hexs at a time when she could. Her pathways were always white. She quilted them on a wooden quilting frame in the corner of a bedroom. She did Double Wedding Ring quilts all by hand as well. The center hexs were always yellow and the print pieces were often feed sacks. These were big quilts too. (We did not have a T.V.).

    I am working on a GFG with 3/4 inch hexies that I started several years ago. I used to only work on it when I traveled, but it's become a nice brain break at home now, too. Mine has turquoise centers, a light purple ring, a dark purple ring, a light green ring & a pale yellow for the paths. The pattern I found in my grandma's upstairs that I'm using for inspiration also has diamonds between the flowers. So those are a lilac color. If I decide to continue for a queen-size quilt with a 12-inch drop, i will need about 5,300 hexies! 😮 I have about 30 of the 72 flowers made... time will tell.

    You cannot help but wonder how many of those fabrics were feed sack fabrics and this type of quilt lends itself to swaps between the makers of the period. I had slept under a GFG quilt as a child and would name some of the fabrics in the flowers. Always a favorite. Oh yes and how it got on am angle is a puzzling mystery

    If it was made in 1930’s, it was made during the Great Depression. Fabric was hard to come by, all fabric were repurposed. If it was the way my parents described. It was extremely hard times. It was a beautiful quilt now I want to make, I will probably make as appliqué or putting batting under flower and make it puffy.

    I never did know what became of my mother's Grandmother's Flower Garden quilt. It took her a long time to make it; and, it wasn't very big. I have been working on one for over eight years now. I work on it until my hands hurt (then I have to stop for a while). I may use my finished flowers for something else. I have already used some of my flowers in a Queen sized Double Wedding Ring quilt for my daughter (which she gave away). I put the flowers in the center field between the eyes (or footballs units). It was made from scraps. As soon as I learned that she gave that quilt away (before she received it in the mail), I quit making any more quilts for her. That hurt my feelings so bad. It still upsets me.

    I think you got a bargain. My mother made several queen-size grandmother's flower garden quilts. It is actually tricky to get the flowers straight. Sadly, Mom didn't shop at quilt stores and some of the fabric wore out quickly, so the quilt she made for me is in storage now.

    I wonder if the hexies were cut and assembled by one person, who then was flummoxed when it didn't turn out straight, then someone else took it over years later, squared it with the gingham and quilted it. I like to imagine the unknown stories behind these quilts!

    • @SewtheDistance
      @SewtheDistance  Před měsícem +1

      It is so weird because I think the hexies are straight, which makes me wonder what happened. Unless they are each off by a little bit? It looks like the mix up is on the edges, but I am not sure. I studied it for hours and couldn't figure it out. It is wonderfully unique!

    • @b.a.erlebacher1139
      @b.a.erlebacher1139 Před měsícem +1

      @@SewtheDistance Hmm. I wonder if it is off square by 60 degrees? It looks like the flower hexagons are lined up if you look at it at the proper angle. The maker should have lined it up with a vertical axis of the flowers (a line through opposite corners) parallel to the sides of a rectangular quilt, and a line perpendicular to that line through the sides of the flowers parallel to the top and bottom of the intended rectangle, but must have gotten confused by working with 60 degree angles instead of 90 degrees. It looks like she laid out the flowers side by side and expected it to work like square blocks, but she got the whole works tilted by 60 degrees and couldn't figure out how to straighten it. Whatever happened, it must have been really frustrating!

    Thanks for sharing your joy over this quilt! 😊💞 I thought it was in reasonably good shape for its age. Do you know the makers name and do you put it on a label or make note of it? The gingham brings it into the 60s for dating. I didnt notice it was asku till you pointed it out. Its got some scraps but my guess some purchased or traded fabrics too. That one odd navy, I ❤ it! 😀 Enjoy your quilt.🩷👍

      I do know a lot of information about the maker of this one. I share some of it on my blog, but per the family's request and to protect their privacy, I don't share everything I know about the maker. I label all of the old quilts and keep good records in my notes, in these videos (I have them saved digitally as well as having them on CZcams), and on the labels. It is rare to know so much about the maker! It is a treasure to have the information. I purchased six or seven from this auction that are all made by the same maker. I will be sharing more in the upcoming months! Stay tuned.
