    I inherited a quilt top from my Grandma (who sewed on a treadle machine) that was 9 patches with a solid turquoise and assorted prints. I chose to finish it with a white backing and tying and it has since gone to my adult Granddaughter as part of our heritage. She has her kerosene lantern and butter churn also. Luckily she treasures these things. Thanks for sharing

    Wow!! So very early 70s. I am old enough to remember when those colors and small pattern prints were the style. Primary colors were all over the place. The florals were also everywhere (think hippy skirts!). Fabric was so inexpensive and I learned to sew using fabric of this kind! I think I still have some of the hilariously amateur quilt efforts I made out of--you guessed it, primary colors, small scale florals, and poly blend backing. Thanks for the blast from the past, Kris.

    an idea for you Kris is to somehow record on paper or whatever the facts/story of the quilt for the future so the story goes along with the quilt♥thanks for sharing your amazing quilt finds! we do not want to have these treasures end up in the landfill, ever.

      Thank you so much for the suggestion!
      My thought is I have these videos to document the quilts. ❤️
      I have the originals of all the videos ,so if CZcams ever goes away, I still have a digital record of them, including several backup copies of the videos. I am also labeling the quilts, too, along with the links to the videos on the labels. Hopefully this will allow them to live on long after I am gone. I feel paper documentation could get lost and ruined more easily than having them labeled directly on the quilts and having several digital copies of the videos. My kids are more likely to keep video files.
      Thank you so much for this, however! Everyone should document their quilts in whatever why they can. I am sure this will help others, as well! ❤️

    This is a beautiful and fun quilt. It's great that it has been preserved for you to share with us. However it saddens me when a quilt is given to a baby, intended to be used and loved, but gets put away and not used incase it is ruined. This has happened to me. I have friends a baby quilt but they said it was "too good" to be used. I love to make quilts but I love it even more when my quilts that have been given as gifts get used.

    I think this quilt has such a tragic history. Someone made this for a child to use & comfort them as they grew. It breaks my heart that the parent would not let the child enjoy the quilt, but put it away for decades & then in the end sell it for $5 😢
    If only the child had played with it till it was ripped & stained & worn out & thrown away. The pleasure that child could of had from that quilt was priceless.
    It makes me so sad to hear these stories but thanks for sharing.

      I completely agree with this! I can see where the mother was coming from in a way, especially since you probably didn't really understand that baby quilts are made to be used! Or maybe the maker told her not to use it? Who knows. It is sad, however. Such a happy quilt! If I ever have grandchildren (not looking good with my two adult sons! LOL!) but IF I do, it will get used, for sure. Thank you so much for watching and sharing your views on this! I am sure others agree, too! ❤️

      Hopefully, the child had another blanket to love and wear out. I still have my blue, wool baby blanket. 4 women were good friends and were all pregnant. One of them took a new wool blanket and cut it in quarters. She put a blue binding on them. She kept one for her baby and gave the other to her friends. It gave me great comfort to cover my babies with that old, well-worn blanket. ❤

    My mom made a (first )9 patch quilt using the first sewing machine capable of doing decorative / zig zag stitches. Instead of tying the blocks, she used the zig zag circle that was on the machine in the center of the block. She was a self taught quilter as back then there were no books, pattern or instructions for quilts. I think she cut up a commercial blanket for the batting. That quilt is over 60 years old and it still hangs around.

    I read your blog about this quilt, and I absolutely agree that quilts should be used. I think people forget that unless a quilt is made with embellishments, a quilt made from cotton and quality batting can be laundered just like clothing. This quilt would have made a wonderful play mat for the little boy. Someone could have sat with him and used the solid squares to teach color names. Once the colors were familiar, they could have moved on to naming the main color of the printed fabric. My son learned his colors from a poster on our kitchen closet door. A quilt like this would have been more fun.

    • @SewtheDistance
      @SewtheDistance  Před 11 měsíci

      Thank you so much for reading my blog! I couldn't agree more. We need to use quilts and when we give quilts to non-quilter, we need to tell them to use them. I think that's what happened with this woman, Carol. She really loved it so much and wanted to keep it as is, not realizing its purpose was to be loved and used. It happens a lot, I think, even now. I think her intentions were good, although misguided in my opinion. That said, the maker could have told her it was only to be used as decoration. Who knows. Either way, it will be loved and used now and if I ever have grandchild, you can guarantee they will be using it! I will make sure of that. ❤️
      Thank you for your beauty insight on this quilt and for sharing it here. ❤️❤️❤️

    So bright and cheery. Charm packs of florals and solids would be great for this. What was the ties she used? Thick crochet cotton or something. It didn't have a batting. This quilt is one that you could use your own style with. Batting? or no batting? Regular binding or the lap over style on this one? I use this method quite a bit. Lovely quilt.
