- Repairing a worn vintage quilt can be challenging. Is it even worth fixing an antique quilt, or is it better to repurpose into something new? In this video we will discuss reasons to restore a quilt and when to upcycle. I am refiguring my baby quilt made by my mat. Grandmother into 3 separate quilts. I gave 3 children. The quilt was very heavy. As there were many areas of seams coming apart, I decided to redo it. The middle layer was 4 layers of blue and white heavy brocade curtain. The backing was an off white old baby blanket with satin edge. The satin was a mess. I took that off. I’m going to gently wash it and wring it out in the washer. Not going to put in dryer. Laying out in sun on a sheet separating it from the ground and another sheet for the top to prevent sun bleaching unless it was needed.. (That is what my grandma did to her blankets. The brocade unfolded would still be the batting part but in 2 layers instead of 4. The backing is going to be one of the blankets I took them home from the hospital. I had 2 of those each. It’s all in process. I’ll use one of my cotton skirts as a binding.
You did an outstanding job of refurbishing this vintage quilt. I too love to take an old vintage baby quilt for example and refurbish them. I've done about five so far. I've been quilting for three years, so I'm still a bit new at this craft. I make quilts for adults and children and expect them to be used not hung a wall to collect dust. I've never understood why someone would go through all the work to sew a quilt only to hang it on the wall. But that's me. I prefer to use them. I just bought an vintage baby quilt from an antique shop. It was a real train wreck.Before refurbishing it I took many pictures of the quilt and then tossed it in the washing machine and then the drier. This particular baby quilt had a lot of beautiful cross stitching on it. I removed with my seam ripper every machine stitch being extremely careful not to rip the top quilt. Then I sprayed strached and ironed the quilt. I ironed on a fusible interfacing to the back of the quilt top to give it more body. Note - I did check the quilt before washing for stains and treated them as such. The quilt came out free of stains. Next I took it over to my favorite quilt shop and had them long arm it using new batting and a new corrodnating cotton backing. Lastly I took it home and sewed on new binding. I always cut my binding out in 3" width. I think it makes for a prettier look. Now the quilt looks brand new and ready for sale. With my Sonbonnet Sue & Sonbonnet Sam quilts I do the same but I sew in new sashing, corner stones, boarder and new batting with a cotton coordinating fabric. I also, buy new fabric for the binding as well. I always wash all my new fabric before beginning the project since the orginal quilt top had been washed several times over the years. I also pour in white vinegar to set the colors. You basiclly did the same except for the batting. I would of used new batting assuming the owner is going to use this quilt and wash it several times as the years go on. Your video was well demonstrated. Thank you for sharing. I’ve quilted very intricate king sized quilting on my domestic machine. I’ve even done ruler work on my domestic! Where there’s a will there’s a way!The quilt turned out so nice! Way better than the original. She’ll love it!

I had to chuckle, "very old fabrics", what I saw of the fabrics were from the 50's, 60's. To me very old fabric is late 18th century, early 19th century. I guess it's showing my age.
Oh, too funny! 🤣 Remember that fabrics age kinda like dogs do - very quickly. So don’t worry, your age is only as old as you feel. 😉

Beautiful!! So glad i stumbled upon this! I have a patchwork quilt that needs some TLC! I have the ties taken off and have found many small opening in the seam lines. Although i have yet to open the quilt up to work on repairing, it seems as though the seam allowance are very tiny, making for a not very sturdy seam hence all the holes I’m finding! Wanted to get your thoughts on running each row and column through my serger to make the quilt more durable? Any ideas or advice are much appreciated! Again, thank you for sharing this video! 🤗
Hi Morgan, thanks for watching. ☺️ As far as serging the seams, my only concern is that serging may add bulk to the seam lines. Serging adds a lot of thread and may be seen (or can be felt) from the front side, especially if the fabric is already thin. You might want to consider hand-mending in the tiny seam allowance sections. I do offer complete consultation services through Zoom or email. I love the cheerful color scheme of that quilt. I am wondering about how much do you charge to do repairs like the ones you did on this quilt. I am wondering in case anyone ever asks me to do this kind of work. I like your bird. My brother had a cockatiel. They are so sweet.
Good question. I charge $20 - $25 an hour plus supplies. Cockatiels are the best! So loving and full of personality!
When I learned to quilt as a little girl, this item was called a comforter. Quilts were held together with stitching not ties.

I have a 100 year old quilt that is hand sewn and very thick. There are many holes in fabric and some completely through backing. My solution is to wash, patch, and put new binding. if I separate the layers I'm destroying the hand stitches. I would love to replace batting which is likely 3 blankets. One quilt has a star design so I imagine I will need to cut it close to design and slip stitch it. Any pearls of wisdom? The backing also needs patched.
Sounds like you have a great start! Replacing the batting is an excellent idea. I would say your instincts will guide you. Good luck - I know you can do it!💕
When I tell my customers the quilt needs to be washed on a delicate cycle using wash to cool washer, no bleach or fabric softener. Then place in dryer on low or lay out on a white towel to dry. I also, ask them to use a washing mahine that does not have the agitator in the middle. Rather take it to a laundry matt to wash instead. Also, wash the quilt by it self. Nothing should be in the washer except the quilt

Hi Lori, that is such a good question! First of all, remember your skill is worth a lot, so don’t under sell yourself. Just like a any trade, your labor should be adequately compensated. I charge both by the hour and for the materials. I clock not only my work on the project but also and planning and/or designing I do as well. Before I take on a project I usually meet w the customer (or talk on the phone or Zoom), talk about what needs to be done and then give a written estimate before agreeing to do it. Sometimes customers are shocked at the price, but I remind them of the cost of labor for car repairs and plumbers. Our knowledge is valuable. It should be compensated as such. I hope that helps. Maybe this would be a good video topic…🤔
