  • Using crumbs and strings, we are going to make a mile a minute house block! It is so much fun, is scrappy, and well, adorable.
    Supplies Needed for the Block I made. You can easily change the size.
    Crumbs (small scrap pieces of fabric): one for each block
    Strings (long strips of fabric in various sizes): TONS of these!
    1.5" x 6.5' of background (two for each block)
    4.75" square of background (two for each block)
    4.75" x 8.75" roof fabric (one for each block)

    Thanks for sharing this! I used to play around with the MILE A MINUTE blocks years ago, and it's a great scrap buster. As far as i know, the technique was developed by Carol Coski. She wrote an article for the Winter, 2000, issue of American Quilter magazine, which is where I first learned of it. Somewhere, I have a "pattern" of sorts, also written by Carol.

      It probably would if I did it all the time. I only do it in my videos so I don't have to change cameras or camera angles. I probably should be showing better sewing habits, however. LOL! Sorry about that!

    Love your sewing table - who manufacturers it? Please let me know if you can. Thanks. BTW your tutorial was fantastic!!

      Thank you so much! I got that table when I bought my Janome. It was in a bundle deal. I have had many people ask about it, but unfortunately, it doesn't have a label/manufacturer printed on it anywhere. It is a great table, and I wish I could get one for my Juki, too. Sorry I can't help!

    Aloha! I just came across this tutorial…scrappy projects are right up my alley! I’m very interested in the Halloween quilt. What are the dimensions for the house that you added into your quilt? What are the dimensions for the individual scrappy block? MIA (mahalo in advance)

      Aloha! I am trying to remember as I gifted the Halloween quilt to someone. I believe it was the same as outlined in this video, however. The taller blocks would have been double that. That said, this technique works for whatever size you need. Just keep adding fabrics! hope this helps. I wish I could help more!
      So happy you love this! It is a favorite technique for me, too!

    Eleanor Burns is famous for this technique to make Log Cabin quilts. She has at least a few books

      I don't think I have seen her do this, but I could have missed it. I have seen her wonky log cabin quilts. So much fun!

    Yes, love house blocks. A question though. If you add 1.5 sides to the crumb block that measures 6.5, your roof should be larger that 6.5. Or, did I miss something.

      @SewtheDistance  Před rokem

      Oh my. Did I make a mistake in the measurements I gave? 😬 The flying geese block measures 4.5" x 8.5" finished (before in the block). I will have to go back and see what I said! Sorry about that!

    I had that same table you cut on in my sewing room (we put casters on mine) but my room was just too small. My late husband had put it in there for me and so I couldn't remember how he got it in there - lol! I had to take the legs off to get it out. It was a chore!! I like your houses. Thanks for sharing some of the dimensions. I guess after you make the original center, you keep adding strips until it gets bigger than the 6.5". Will you lose your roof eaves/points when you sew the blocks together? The halloween version is cute and I think a patriotic one will be cute too!

      Hi! Love that table, too. We got it for $5 from Facebook Marketplace, and it has been in many different areas of my house over the years. Worth every penny! LOL! As for the roof portion, You don't loose the points with the sizes I gave, but I think it has to do with how you make the flying geese units. I patriotic one would be super cute! Thank.you for watching and commenting! ❤️

    Hi Kris was wondering if you have finished your Mile a Minute house quilt yet and if you put boarders between you houses

    • @SewtheDistance
      @SewtheDistance  Před rokem

      I have been working on finishing the blocks up, so I think I am going to sash it with Christmas fabric. A friend of mine made one and that's that she did. It looks really nice! I need to get it up on my design wall. I made the roofs red and green and I think I am going to alternate the red and green blocks. Loving how it turned out!
