  • An extremely brief video on why your Minecraft servers die based on my experience. This is my second video so it's all over the place, I did a lot of experimentation with video styles and editing techniques.
It's hard to get a feel for what is allowed or not in terms of videos and songs I use, so I'm experimenting with that too. This youtube channel is currently only a small part of my online content. Check out my Twitch at Twitch.tv/iAmLufa
    I hope you enjoyed.

So long before I even watched this video I tried a similar server. We had a discord group with 9 people, we scheduled a once a week 2 hour sessions, and made sure at least 5 people were available before we made a session. After the 5th sessions, the realm died for no reason. I don't understand why, as I followed all of your included instructions. Can you give me any tips?

Separated bases kill servers, but so does everyone living in one base. a few of my friends were in a minecraft server with around 20 other people. the server went well until they all moved into this giant pyramid and because they had no freedom to build they all got bored and left.
    My personal experience:
my minecraft server had me and 9 other friends in it. It started in october 2021. it went perfectly, our houses were all in one town, and we all had fun. the only bad thing that happened was a small skirmish between me and friend 1vs enemy 1 and 2 because we thought they might overthrow the town. (enemy 1 will become important later) However we kept grinding until the dragon fight. unfortunately my pc had some issues so i coulnt use it for a while. the server came back a few months later and we fought the dragon. Everyone started opening shops and farms. However, I eventually caught enemy 1 xraying. I already hated this guy and it made me hate him even more. after beating the dragon, a couple more people joined. However, a small war started between me and enemy 1. most people stayed neutral. me and enemy 2 (now allied) got into a battle with enemy 1 where enemy 1 was winning but called for peace. at this point, the server started dying because it got boring. enemy 1, enemy 2 and other guy made a secret base, and at this point i close the server. Server starts again in october, and its somewhat active for a few days. however, after enemy 1 xrayed everything, everyone else started xraying. more and more people were moving away as well, and quarrantine was over so people had better stuff to do. it got to a point where only me and 2 other people were playing daily and 5 people had basically already quit, so i shut the server down for good.
    also nice video lol

    • @Capnight1fr
      @Capnight1fr Před rokem +2

So here's a thing, ban the xrayer. Regardless if u like em or not have a simple rulebook, xray - ban, cheat - ban, not doing that results in what exactly happened, everyone follows the xrayer and do the same cuz they think its the only fair thing. You see the issue.
And about ur 20 ppl in a pyramid, u limit them too much, yall dont have to live in one house, living in one city is enough, but if u live too far away from each other (like 5k blocks from each other) that aint healthy either.

Heres a list of stuff that can help.
1: Smaller border (like under 10k)
2: Tell people to slow down progression and not speedrun diamonds, etc etc
3: play in sessions, don't let others start the server and grind
4: make sure everyone (able to) plays in the sessions
5: Try add roleplay, wether it be big or small it can keep players playing.
Hope you enjoy this list and it keeps your server(s) active!

Hermit craft is a server that can go on for a long time and keep things interesting. Like they host events and pull harmless pranks on each other. Like hiding skulk streakers in other hermits basses. Or making custom items for mini games. Those events are really fun to watch. And the hermits have fun while playing the game.

It does bug me personally that this ended up resulting in cases where people don't return to their bases normally. Since they never lose their items, they'll just die on purpose to spawn back in their beds with of their new stuff. But the group does remain active and together anyways, so the server doesn't really "die" because of this.

Yes, I agree that players don't need to build their bases at a huge distance from each other. Once, me and 2 of my friends created a new world, and when we split up in different directions, as a joke, I told one of my friends the wrong coordinates for our new home (don't do that, I was young and stupid), and so when he came to the wrong coordinates, he said he would not come to us, and started playing alone, away from us. We played like that for about 20 in-game days, and afterwards, I came to him through all those tens of thousands of blocks, and built a long bridge from between our houses so that every time we met was a real adventure!
The story ended with him moving in and me admitting my guilt! Appreciate your friends, playing together is the most valuable thing Minecraft can give you!

On an older server a pretty similar thing happened, my friend told me he was gonna go on an "adventure" to see if he could find anything cool, and he would be back in a few days. Long story short, he ended up moving 8000 blocks away, and refused to come back so everyone else had to go to him. He said that he had found a beautiful mountain, but it was nearly impossible to build on because of the terrain.

My server runs for four years now, most important thing is too keep people hooked by promising them that the server will be up in a few years, in between updates the server barely goes over 5 players but when updates happen in minecraft the server gets up to 29 players for a weeks. We got alot of farms and infrastructure which also motivates people to add to it and leave their mark on a server that will be around long time. Also overtime we had some mega projects, which work bc people keep coming online once per week and add stuff. Over long time big things become reality.

One point I wanted to add is that I have noticed a lot of smps using paper or spigot without modifying the default config. This is annoying because paper tends to patch vanilla features such as breaking bedrock, and even though you can still access the nether roof using other methods, I still think vanilla features such as breaking bedrock should not be patched on smps. On a different note, I thought it was funny that you included bloopers, and I think it would be cool to see them in future videos!

Somewhat unrelated, but on an old server that lasted for over a month, once it started to inevitably die, the admin decided that we would host a sort of purge, where griefing and killing would be legal. Almost all of the bases were completely destroyed, every single set of armor was lost, every sword, every food item, everything. The server stayed up for a week after that and it was strange walking through the half destroyed lavacasts that covered what used to be someones base.

    • @globsterjail8195
      @globsterjail8195 Před měsícem

Not entirely on topic for this, but a purge server actually sounds so cool if it's set up from the start. Think of it like this:
You and a bunch of friends get together and make a minecraft server. Any little strings attached that you want (Mods, plugins, etc.) with an overarching plan: The server will play out normally for a set amount of time. (say, one month)
During that one month is preparation. You and everyone else have to play as if it's a regular coop survival smp. But, at the same time, you're all preparing since you all know what comes at the end of the month: The purge
During that month you can make friends, gather resources, get farther from spawn, make deals, anything to try and help with the oncoming event. But, once the month is over, all rules are thrown out the window.
Aside from admins not being able to use admin powers (since that inherently undermines the game due to unfair advantages) you and everyone else can do whatever you want or need in order to survive. Griefing bases, abusing glitches, stealing, anything is on the table for the one goal: To be the last man standing.
The overall aim of the game is to be the last person alive after the purge is set off. Anybody who's either dead after the purge, or logged off for a few days is considered dead and automatically loses.

  • @Scrittus
    @Scrittus Před rokem +7

These are good points, however the other factor of a dead server is the players 'finishing' the game.
Once people grind up the best gear, beat the ender dragon, and are routinely flying around on Elytra, there's not much to do on a minecraft server aside from building. Especially not PVP because most people get pissed off if you kill them with all their cool items.
The game becomes boring without a clear goal or difficult conflict to keep people going on the server. Minecraft has an incredibly addictive gameplay loop which can be played for tens of hours at a time. Within just a few days players can mark off most of the end game gear from their list. Netherite, tridents, wings, etc. It's fun to get those resources, but once you have them you can't really use them well.
    My extra rules would be:
-Block off The End Dimension and make it a special event for everyone to get on and do
-Do some PVP and make some storylines with your friends. RP a little bit, but don't burn bridges with it. If you kill someone, help them collect their things, and make sure it's all in good fun.
-Figure out a goal that is outside the typical realm of Minecraft. This game used to be about building anything you could imagine, but now most people will only build what's best because they know too much about the game.
-Shut the server down during some days, and schedule times for the server to be open. This slows people down from grinding, while also giving everyone a time to get on the server together. Doing this makes the server more of an event than just something everyone can hop onto at any time (And therefore no one hops on at any time because no one else is ever on at the same time)

I appreciated this video. I didn't need Adderall to watch it, if you do plan on making longform videos seriously though, I only say consider the 10 minute mark in the long run, and it wasn't too much information for the modern day viewer to absorb in video format, maybe on paper, but you clearly labeled it out and gave the concepts concisely, I just may have not gotten the pause joke at the end of 1 into 2, but I still found it agreeable and something people don't usually consider reasonably and just give up on (like a majority of difficult to continue) minecart worlds. I don't make videos and am just a humble viewer without advanced online creator experience, but you're getting your content forward and consistently with the ideas represented through imagery and that's all most people need on top of occasional jokes through the seriousness.

When we play, we always find a village and decide that it's "temporary base"... it always becomes permanent, while we destroy the village, enslave the villagers and build our own houses on their land.

i have an approach for the casual players
my friend groups tended to always be a mix of super competitive pvp/gear grinders and casual house builders, and the server always died within a month after the former tried to "start a war," i started a new server among a different group of friends where we literally have NO rules except no intentional griefing and killing- xray and cheats are allowed, but i only gave some people i trust well cheats to tp. the server is primarily focused on having as many ongoing projects to work on together (houses, mansions, castles, wtvr) i also give people supplies and items with commands as long as they are already obtainable. for example, if we have already have axes, ill spawn in wood for you as long as those resources can be gained manually. on top of all of this we have keepinv on to reduce incentive for pvp.
it turned this very inactive community of people who never played into a beautiful active one, and the server has been going strong since august, with some times where we take a break from the building grind
ik this isnt the most "faithful" way to play but nobody cares since its our own little private world. weve come a long way and built a sick town on an island, a huge underground reserve for trees and lakes, and a lot of other things. we still have fun with the server without cheating like summoning two withers at the same time in a cave a thousand blocks from spawn.
its practically a creative server with optional grinding for resources and dying, and i really recommend playing the game how u want to play it, not how people expect u to play it.

Really well made video dude, came from TikTok! Def a step in the right direction if you wanna stray away from TikTok content
I also agree with your points a lot. Best order of things is def
    1. Start when lots of people are available
    2. Keep consistent communication
    3. Build near each other (or if you build far away use nether portals if it's far enough)
I think a big issue with MC is burnout because a lot of us have the tendency to make a new world, do so much stuff in it within a week or 2 and then just get burnt out and then not play for 6 months. Personally I've had some other games recently they I rotate in between that way I'm not just playing Minecraft, but I can't say the same for other server members. Like sometimes I'll hear one of my friends be like "I don't know what to do," or "I don't know what to build" which is unfortunate.

I personally can't stand this "Factions/Anarchy Era'" that Minecraft multiplayer is in. Everyone feels like they have to build far away from each other because the other players are definitely trying to hunt them down and kill them, yep don't even question if that's true. The large youtuber servers out there also do this and everyone wants to be like them so it just continues on and on and on like that. Its so annoying because I remember a long time ago when Minecraft multiplayer was about having fun with your friends and building together, not trying to become the most powerful person on the server so that you can create a tyrannical government and now OOOOOOO LOREEEEE!!!!!! Every server needs to have lore now for some reason, I don't get it. Lets not forget the idea that everyone wants to do the things the youtubers do, like spawning 100 withers on some ones base because they killed your dog. Now that person doesn't wanna play anymore and the griefer sits there and wonders why, after he destroyed all the hard work and progress that was put into a really nice base, that this person doesn't want to play anymore. These large creators are basically turning every server into a copy and its so annoying. Bring back the old style of Minecraft multiplayer where people play together, not against each other! (Also btw you have the same mic as me lol, you are a man of taste!)

Pretty true, as an owner I had made all of these mistakes, first Building a base to far apart before I had made a server just feels like single player with a text chat to talk to people only with they usernames although laughably easy to ignore when you dont know anyone especially on big servers.
Second progressing to fast definitely kills its because people often like to get into the game when its new, A good tip to guarantee a high chance keep the server alive for atleast 1 months is to lock certain tools like diamond the first week, the nether dimension until the second week and the end for the first month so people can catch up with the speedrunners and then do an event to try to get everyone to beat the ender dragon to guarantee the most equal chance to get an elytra.
Third one is extremely important, I had on a previous server a mod use creative mode to make a netherite beacon, and tens of maxxed netherite kits for over a month without noticing or just had one case where an admin griefed the whole discord or mc server and took hours to repair, on both of these occasions I had the player count halved and took months to recover without any guaranteed success

June of 2020 I joined a simple aternos server with 2 friends, a bit later I added my siblings and we added few more friends and it held up pretty nicely maybe even about a year, actually it was doing well enough that I got it on paid host and actually became the new “owner” at the end of 2020, haven’t changed it since. I think the worst year was last. Only me and my partner stayed that year playing and sometimes it was sad and lonely but then vacation was bit better obviously and then it died for few months since most of the people were finishing high school. But this year it started living again, now it’s me, my partner and one particular friend most of the time. Besides there are two other friends that are playing quite frequently. Every update my brother comes back as well to do all the new things. And even my sister came back few times this year. But I think the thing is the main 3 of us treat it as our main minecraft “world” so if we want to play minecraft we choose the server.
About cheaaaats well. There’s a hard no about cheats that would give you ie. blocks that aren’t obtainable in survival. But we accept cheating your items after dying (partially because 5 minutes is stupidly short and i think it should be an hour before items despawn bc in games where items despawning takes longer i had little to no issues with dying) and partially because half the time somebody dies is bc they went afk and forgot and something killed them. Up until this time it didint cause problems. Also teleporting is fine, I even added warps for people that prefer teleporting, so it’s easier for them. I personally almost always choose to go by traditional minecraft ways of traveling but it’s me. And also other small cheats like if there’s really little blocks left to finish something but sb has it in their magazine they can finish it on creative as long as they burn “used” items later. Sometimes even finishing tricky parts of builds on creative (still burning blocks afterwards or just deleting as many as we’re used) is fine, we’re no fancy builders so it helps with easing frustration.
Also even if cheating your items back is allowed in a way, I’d never add keepinventory because it would erase fear of death completely. Even with item cheating allowed it’s kinda stressful so ppl won’t die to come back to a house or smth.
Idk also we give each other ideas for building sometimes, talk and just motivate each other a bit and it keeps the server going as much as it needs to survive.
So like don’t keep people stressed and frustrated and they’ll come back… I think? Also we’re lucky enough that we have no mean people so there’s no stealing or griefing. Everybody lives in more or less harmony.
Biggest “drama” there was was recently when on of the friends places budding amethyst in their house when it’s unobtainable but we just silently exchanged it and it wasn’t even a drama but yeahhhhh.

i also think that the poeple who get bored fast ruin the experience for the rest of the server. you always have that one friend (or two) who get their diamonds, build one base and get bored but dont stop playing. Instead of just not enjoying it and stopping they think "ahh this server is all for nothing why would we even continue" and they decide to grief the whole server and blow up everyones bases which then makes those players bored and they either stop or they join them making the server fall within a week
