Great video and those are excellent reasons! I'm a high school teacher who started an after school Minecraft Club during the 2020-2021 online school year. One of my students sent me this video and they said our SMP never got stale during that school year since I limited playtime on the server to once a week for two hours. This ensured no one would "grind" out on the server and experience burnout. It also made them feel excited and eagerly await when they could finally get back on the server. The students also made up their own lore so that also kept things interesting and I would also host events (Thanksgiving feast, Winter holiday event, Lunar New Year party, pig races, etc.).

Before I go ahead and finish watching the video, I am going to add that part of the reason they fail for regular people and not people like Tommy and Dream is money. They make millions of dollars streaming and making videos for these things. It is literally their job to do this. Me and my friend group started one and rn its mostly just me playing for an hour or so a day and I rarely see others doing it at the same time. Hard to put decent time into something like this when I have other games I want to play, work about 8-10 hours a day, and have other things in life to deal with.
Definitely! When doing it is your whole job, there's loads of motivation lol
I've gone through the motions with SMP, but it still ends up being one of my favourite ways to play Minecraft as a whole. I've been a member, moderator, event creator, and have seen what I'd call "the life cycle of SMP" countless times. From a player perspective you generally want to see progress of other players, get inspired, maybe have economic factors - basically you set goals for yourself as MC is innately a sandbox. From administration you want to continue to foster that community of people so that when the eventual listlessness kicks in from playing one game for so long that it turns almost into burnout, there are new players with ambition to keep going. One thing I think that is missing is the dictomy between an old server and a new one. Some players just don't want to see the time they invested into a game to be a "waste" which could be more of a reflection on how society views time investment as a thing you get a return on instead of something you do for its own sake. A lot of people end up not returning or having a chip on their shoulder when the creations they made are abandoned for a fresh new world (and on the other side some people stray away from joining an old server for the fear their goals will be mimimized or already completed.)
The most unique way I can think of bridging over this gap was when we would have an end of the server blow out, exploding everything. You can take that and maybe use people's builds and make them overgrown - have a competition for builds that will be ported over into the next server for people to find and explore. Exploration and events have always been an issue with MC as after awhile it feels antiquated or stale, and a lot of SMP staff end up burning out just from trying to create events with meaningful rewards for players.
Anyway, keep up the good work!
Yeah people are 100% attached to things that they've spent tons of time on. Starting over feels bad and that's definitely a big reason why an SMP might not work.
The reasons I personally don't like SMPs as much as Singelplayer series on CZcams is because Singleplayer feels more cozy and personal. What I mean is that in Singleplayer it's one you in a big world and on CZcams, the experience feels like I am part of it because the person making the video is talking to the audience, taking on tasks all by themselves and having us along for the journey, it's like having a one-on-one hang out with your best friend. Meanwhile SMP's make me feel like a third wheel, seeing the players interact with eachother meanwhile I'm just here wishing I could be there having fun with them.
I am so glad small creators like you are getting their amazing videos getting pushed out into the algorithm. Good luck and I hope you create more stuff like this!
Honestly I feel like all these are worth it because playing with your friends is genuinely one of the most fun ways to play
I have been trying to inovate on my Minecraft SMP. But not only that, I have been trying to inovate on my server as a whole. My server isnt a typical Minecraft server. The Hub is full of easter eggs and mini games. The Survival/Factions Realm is full of interesting additions to the game and focuses on PvP and wars.
Then lastly is the Private SMP Realm, an ever changing realm that focuses on community and all that. Every season of the SMP I try to change it up a bit, maybe one season it could be vanilla and then the next season it could be skyblock or something. I always try to encourage players to go all out, make a story, make videos, stream whenever, and just create their own ways to have fun on the SMP. So far Pixel Planet's Private SMP has been around since 2019, 7 seasons total. The server has taken many breaks but starting this year I want to keep going as long as I can.
Basically my Minecraft Server is public, you join and you appear in the Hub Realm, in the Hub you can parkour, duel friends, find secrets, explore and more! You can join the Survival/Factions Realm through the Hub, this realm has slight additions to the game, like crates (obtained from mining), ranks (from crates), tags (from a lot of places), relics & shards (exclusivly from mining).
You can alternatively join the Private SMP from the Hub, only if you have access. Hopefully that clears things up.
In the end, Pixel Planet hasnt grown big, but it hasnt fallen either. It has been a slow but steady growth, and I think thats awesome. It allows me to meet and talk to each member, I want the community to feel connected and I want everyone to be friends. So overall I think my SMP is good, but that's just my opinion.
Fantastic video. It’s not even just modern SMPs that suffer through this. I remember back in the day watching How to Minecraft. First two season were great but after that, even with mods, motivation was lost.
Personally, i think mods should be on smps, not to many cuz it would just be hard, maybe one like advent of assension that adds new dimensions
What do you mean by hard? Depends on the type of mods
On top of that, the purpose of your SMP shouldn't be to make content, but rather to have fun. It's perfectly fine if your SMP is just a means to have fun with friends or to relieve stress.

First off, great video, I'm gonna share this all over and try to make you explode with subs.
Second off, I think another factor that brings Hermitcraft into a different category, is that it's by invite-only and you have to be an established youtuber with an existing audience. You can't just be Joe Blow who started playing MC yesterday. So it's something for someone to strive for in Minecraft, becoming a large enough CZcamsr that you get invited to the server.
i love how he doesnt destroy the Technoblade armor stand, rest in peace
bro you are so underrated for this video
i've definitely seen this as a survival smp starter and creator myself
good job now ima sub
This was a huge issue I personally had from a outsider point of view, I always wanted to play in a SMP but never even had a chance to because of 1, most SMP's are just crowded/heavily ruled servers (at least from my searches for a SMP), with not enough room for each person to have a impact in everyone else's experience (Like many would have 1000 players when It's much more interactive with just 30 IMO), another reason being I just didn't have anyone to play with, and the third reason was like many, why do I have to spend money just to keep a server running 24/7 if there is no 3 other people to even play with. This video feels like a somewhat answer/heads up warning for the future because I do genuinely want to play in a SMP. (it really gets you upset when watching hermit craft and watching everyone having fun and saying 'why can't I?') But I'm glad independent SMP's are still possible, just really hard to find.
From a practical standpoint, hosting servers and their community spaces is difficult, thus only adding to the headache of keeping one alive. Hosting an official Discord, Reddit, or CZcams channel alongside the server is obligatory at this point. It reduces the amount of time the host has to tend to bugs, plug-in issues, cheaters, and the general crappiness of Minecraft’s server limitations, allowing them to quickly spiral out of control.
I personally avoid SMPs for these reasons and opt for anarchy. I’m not going to wait for an admin to deal with cheaters, restore world backups, or come up with an event idea to revive a lackluster community. Although anarchy isn’t much better from a host’s side, anarchy communities tend to be stronger than most SMP communities from what I’ve seen, as it draws in more dedicated players. Anarchy sorta fixes the burnout issue that SMPs have.
With all that said, neat video and good pointers. Keep up the good stuff, dood.
4:21 most respected thing on the vid
Yeah I'm in a server for an SMP, qnd it's pretty chill it's not made for content, so it's not that imperative that everyone play, but we have things like improv role-playing and even when people don't come online to rp they come online to build. This can help it stay alive, qs every user we have a Christmas/holiday event (some of our players are from other places in the world so it's all good fun it's just gift giving) and that usually revives it pretty well!! We also have stuff like everyone building a Rollercoaster theme park and merchandise shop to indoctrinate people into the lore's cult jajaja. Usually people come on to build and progress lore!! Also the buildings are just beautiful and there are endless holes and secret tunnels to find. I know that while everyone was offline, I was on a lot because I was new, and a lot of people liked to stick around and see the changes that happened since they were gone.
also the fact that they ruined the world sharing feature in 1.3 but nobody talks about it
I remember when my friend and I made an smp and in the end she blew it up- I think there's still TNT blowing up till this day....
i think mods, modpacks and datapacks do mostly carry the server
without them the server would feel dry
Also plugins
4:24 I love that little detail paying respects to Technoblade
usually the reason i quit most servers i play is because i get way too stacked. I complete the thing i want to do, but then i dont have anymore goals that i want to complete.
netherverse made a video like this, its awsome to see that other people acknowledge this!
God damn! Tossing some major shade at blue by using his realms as an example lol. Keep it up man.
didn't mean it like that lol
You have earned a sub today my friend. Amazing video!
I played an smp from Jan 2021 and it survived for 11 seasons and didn't die until mid 2022 (only cause people went to valorant) but its hard to find those smps these days
Great video!
very solid and concise. definitely gonna be keeping an eye out for more from you :3
underrated channel and video, nice job man
This is a wonderfully put together video, very nice.
Lore of Why Minecraft SMPs (Usually) Fail momentum 100
I have been running a server for 7 years and watched it happen countless times with other server as you described. Its called the Tragedy of the Commons. If people stop playing and the server calm down cause the initial hype died down, then looking for a new server is "easier" than putting the effort in trying to revive one, cause you gotta put all your eggs in one basket and you might fail. So it naturally spirals towards more and more player looking for a "fresh server that just started"™. Cause for the individual that choice makes more sense.
Thank you for this vid, it was very informative. 3 friends and I are about to start a server and YT channel together, and I plan to share this info with them, so we can make a good start to our SMP.
Tbh over griding leads to boredom making other ppl quit and then eventually you do too, i feel like if you really wanted to grind mc 24/7 without getting bored you need to have like a rival or a large modpack with new stuff on the server which is what your grinding for
ngl ive been thinking just keep the players active and the smp cant fail i play on this server with like 2 main teams constantly at war and like 10 ppl on the server except most of my team and the entire other team quit most people dont play bc its boring to play when nobody else is playing but would having the server only be on during like weekends or smth which would have people forced to play at the same time help revive the server?
2:58 will they care if i threaten them?
i also heard that if you make videos and watch those videos again you will more hardly lose motivation
Good video but my question is did you make a distinction between content creator SMPs and just regular people that play the game that don’t record or make videos? Because I’m not sure how you get the statistics to say that most SMPs usually fail if no one ever knows about them except the small group that plays on it.
Also, I’m not sure “fail” is the right word to use. A server fizzling out seems pretty normal. How long must a server go to be in the success category?
Good points. The SMPs I was talking about were small servers that were also run by creators. I didn't talk about regular SMPs with groups of friends, because those aren't usually looking to succeed, just to have fun. I should've had a more clearly defined metric for success, but I was thinking a server that was up for more than a couple months and had an active community. As for fizzling out, it is a better phrase, but I guess I was too focused on the failing word.
Thank you for the response and clarification. You made a great video, well produced and you laid out your points succinctly. Respect.
Also the video quality is fantastic and definitely earned a sub from me :]
Listen great video great everything im speechless btw new sub
Saddened by the universal, complete disregard of SMPLive.
SMPLive did very much succeed, but it's not as well known so I didn't use it as an example.
@@maybedako yeah except SMPLive had well over tens of millions of views and plenty of people in other SMPs mentioned.
Or are you disregarding it because CallMeCarson is a little pedophile
Ending is the best ❤️
I spent most the video wondering what the p stands for
HEY I MADE THAT STATUE! 2:06
Bro on that duck duck go
Damn nice edits bruh
Great video and surprised your a small CZcams❤ I’m gonna sub now😊
The reason my smp always fails is because i have a lack of friends who plays minecraft. Its only four of us and only 2 of us really play alot.
is that me 00:21 !!!
Hey, ignore the haters. Keep up the good work!
Very nice video!
Good video but could be copied from another video with a similar topic and reasons but you do provide other reasons good job

When you copy netherverse LOL
i dont know who netherverse is, but i looked him up and saw he made a similar video. he released it on january 11th. i've had this idea in my drafts since the 2nd of january
Bro not every video essay about smps is a copy of mine (also I found someone who made a similar video to mine much earlier than me that I never saw before)
@@maybedako good enough for me :)
Great video!
