The difference is with the Chinese ration is that it’s generally assumed that most of the time you will have a supply of plain rice to supplement your rations.

Probably something that affects the calorie count is that I would assume the average Chinese soldier has a lighter body mass (shorter). Personally I would prefer the Chinese MRE as the amount of sugar in the US one would inflate the calorie count and be not as sustaining between meals. While the quail eggs, pickle, rice, chicken, beef, soup would have a higher protein content and therefore higher nutritional value and staving off hunger between next meal.
The only thing I preferred on the US MRE is the choice of drink and coffee and gum!! .... but hey, I wasn't raised on the US 'peanut butter and jelly'... I MUCH prefer the Chinese MRE options :)
    Great video as usual :)

From a food quality and macro perspective per calorie, I'm siding with the Chinese MRE here. It's not all overly processed carb sources beyond recognition from its raw form, be it sugar or flour. Skittles and sugary jams isn't exactly my idea of food for a soldier. Why not add a few spoons of animal fats and some protein to the main instead? It takes up less space and has a lot more calories and nutritious quality to it. Lard, duck fat and butter needn't be too expensive either. 🤷🏻

The peanut butter has a large amount of protein and is generally the go to food for long distance hikers in the states. The jam is extra. Also, we're talking about food tailored for very active jobs. The nutrition is fortified into the meals while the extra sugary stuff is bonus morale food. All US MRE's will have some form of sweet item whether its skittles, flavored drink, candy bar, or cookie. It's one of the lessons that the military logistics started to track all the way back during WWII.
You need a balance of carbs and glucose for people burning calories at that rate. Animal fats are fine for sustainment but take longer to break down. Not great when you're waking up and starting a road march right away.
You'll also notice many other countries use off the shelf products. They tend to be the same or bulkier with less calories. US MRE's are mostly crafted specifically for them with 1 or 2 items as condiments or the comfort food.

It's actually civilian imitation military food from the Chinese version of aliexpress - Taobao. Real Chinese military food is hard to buy in the civilian world, because military food belongs to the military unified procurement of materials, the logistics department management is very strict, and China's military food has a separate military food standards, does not apply to commercially available civilian food standards. In fact, Chinese military rations are not much different from American MREs, with candy, chocolate, coffee or tea bags, and instant juices as standard, and far more calories than imitations.

I’m pretty sure anything you buy from the store on a military installation is tax-free, so cigarettes and matches are probably cheap enough for them to justify leaving them out in an economic sense. It still doesn’t make practical sense to me since matches are infinitely useful in a survival situation.
