One Korean male served in the Air Force. So I ate Korean MRE several times. Maybe that's why this video was so nice when it came out in my algorithm.
What surprised me when I saw this video was that as soon as you saw the chocolate, you thought of melting it and sprinkling it on the cake. This is a common eating method among Korean soldiers.
I know you put all the packages out there because this video has to show you each package for review. However, the best way to treat food is to leave pound cakes, chocolate, and paper bowls outside, leave the rest in the heating pack, pull the rope in the package, and seal it with only a small hole where steam comes out in the package. That's why the packaging bag has a zipper.
Next, put all the food in a paper bowl, eat the food, and then eat the pound keak and chocolate separately.
However, because pound cakes are too dry, most of them melt chocolate and sprinkle it on the cake.

One of the first things I did while serving in the USFK was trade MREs with the ROK Marines. Their chow was insanely good and way different from what I'd had in China. Korea is a fundamentally different and important partner compared to China, and their food is absolutely delicious. It's definitely worth trying. As you can see in this video, they have these awesome pouches to heat up their meals, which makes having hot chow in the cold and dry Korean winters just perfect. Semper Fi!

I had a teacher in high school who served during the Korean war, and he was at chosin. We never got him to talk much about it. We got one story about having to bring up heavier machine guns, because the enemy snipers would hid behind the bodies, and the .30 calibre machine gun rounds just didn't have the penetration. .50BMG did.
What he would say was the cold was more lethal than the enemy. He said "you can fight an enemy soldier, he is a man just like you. You cannot fight the weather, it will win every time."

Summers in Korea are very hot and humid, so the coating on the chocolate balls does not melt even in moderate heat.
So the Korean military breaks it down, melts it, and eats it.
And since winter is so cold, a more powerful heater is needed.
Therefore, a lot of water vapor is generated. To hide it, place it in the provided bougie pouch and seal.
Then, the water vapor returns to the water inside the Buji Popack, and the water vapor is not discharged to the outside.
It makes food warmer with its excellent thermal insulation effect.
The heaters on US military MREs don't get hot in Korean winters and can even freeze.

I'm a reserve soldier who spent his active life in Korea. It's been a while since I saw this new combat food pack. LOL... Many Korean active-duty soldiers mix kimchi, meatloaf, and congami with rice, which is actually no different from video reviews. Meatloaf is also popular with Korean active-duty soldiers, and I didn't know Americans would like it, too... I'm glad you enjoyed it. Choco balls actually taste really similar to M&M, so I wonder if the Pentagon has partnered with M&M companies...

Here Korean. Thanks for the comment about kimchi. The difference between Chinese pao cai and kimchi is the fermentation process. Chinese pao cai uses salt and vinegar, but Korean adds protein amino acids such as shrimp paste to give kimchi its savory flavor. Some regions of Korea also ferment it with fish and shellfish. So Korean kimchi can be the base of Korean meat stew, or like the kimchi you just had, stir-fried with oil (with ground beef) and eaten with rice. Thanks for the great video.

I remember when I served my conscription back in 2011 to 13, I was stoked to try the korean mre since I already knew about the us one. pretty disappointed at our heater since it produced so much steam like a kettle that it might reveal our location during war. Since military business corruption is such a running joke in our country we wondered if it was a business decision over purchasing the license to use the patented us mre flameless heater.
We were rationed the korean mre during a morning of a two week training and we wanted to try the dishes separately like you, but our squad leader was like " what are you guys doing, just dump it all in the rice and eat it quick" so we were forced to just chow down it all, still a great meal tho

If I could make a recommendation, Try to find a brand called Jongga Kimchi from South Korea, it’s very nice cooked or even cold, kept in the fridge! It comes in a small plastic jar, and it’s not super spicy, it might be a bit more suited for your palette! It goes great with soups or just as a side dish!

You seemed to have made a mistake with the Korean MRE. All pouches must be in and around the heating system inside the "resealable" outer pouch for 10-15 minutes. Should have looked at the pictogram on the reverse of the outer pouch 😢.

At the height of Mt. Pinatubo disaster in 1991 when hundreds of thousands (if not millions) of people in Pampanga were displaced & evacuated, our Non-Government Organization was able to request food relief from the former US naval base in Subic, Zambales. It was not the MRE type but the kind brought to the battle camp & prepared & served in the mess hall.
The whole thing came to us in a 20-ft container. Hundreds of gallon-size cans of Beef Stew, powdered biscuit dough mix, mashed potato powder mix, powdered milk, powdered juices, chololate bars, sachets of coffee, creamer & sugar, salt, pepper, disposable cutleries, plates & cups, mint gums, matches, napkins, wet towels, toothpicks & huge garbage bags.
We were told that quantity was enough to feed at least 1,000 soldiers. We formed a roving kitchen & went from one evac. center to another for many days to feed all the evacuees until we exhausted our supply to the last can.
In our record, we fed around 13,000 heads! Not to mention, anybody can come back to the queue for 2nd, 3rd & nth serving. Most of the time, just the first serving was more than enough to satiate the typical Filipino tummy.

I just remember how all of us always ate everything, even the sugar packets. Everything was so delicious because we were always hungry. The meatballs in BBQ sauce were always my favorite. I was a Combat Engineer and we always had details everyday where we put in a lot of work, and even though I was only 150 pounds, I felt like 3 MREs a day was not even enough for me. I felt bad for the bigger guys, they must have always been famished.

@@MeAncient Kimchi is eaten in all manners, and there are many different types of it too. The basic napa cabbage kimchi is eaten cold as a "banchan" (side dish), but also as an ingredient. Some recipes involving cabbage kimchi: Kimchi Bokkeum, stir fried with pork (insanely delicious and completely changes the flavor). Kimchi Jjigae, a kimchi based stew that hits the right spot in cold weather. Kimchi Jeon, a savory pancake with kimchi in it. And a whole lot more.
Then there are other types of kimchi that use other vegetables as well.
I highly suggest you find the best korean restaurant near you and try out the food. It's very very different from almost any cuisine in the world due to the banchan part of the meal. A typical meal is plain white rice, a soup/stew, banchan, and then 1 main meat/fish dish. But there are also tons of noodle dishes, korean version of sushi, and a mindboggling variety of banchan.
