“Australia… interesting…” 😂 Yes, we’re not meant to be there, but we make such a big deal about the event that they now let us compete in it.
@@philjones45 Israel is because of political landscape. Israel is also Europe in sports to avoid classes with the muslim world.
95% of Turkey, Georgia, Azerbaijan, Armenia, a large part of Russia (geographically, much less so population-wise), Tunisia (only entered once), Lebanon (ditto), and Israel aren't really in Europe either. Hell, I think most geographers consider Cyprus to be Asian as well.
@@ericforsyth morocco entered once as well(in 1980) but they got a low place and therefor they decided not to return.
You originate from us anyway 😂 so you’re more than welcome
🤣🤣 so true
“We didn’t realise it was going to be so political” WELCOME TO EUROVISION 😂
in Alexander Lemtov voice: There are no political opinions in Eurovision.
Russia 2012 (the old ladies) was SUCH a huge hit that year, it was one of the songs of the summer on the dance floor. For real!
Cute grandmas.
I vote for them that Year from Portugal.
They also got buffed up, because literally everyone and their mother voted Loreen that year. So mediocre songs got pushed down and memorable and cute ones got the points she didn't get.
@@mjm3091Their mother? Loreen was class though.
@@carlosmpsenyorcapitacollon6977 I mean a lot of people watch it with their families, lol.
Sam Ryder is amazing!!! You guys need to watch that entire song. The clip didn’t do him justice,at all.
It’s terrible

IN 2006 RUNNER-UP WAS BOSNIA AND HERZEGOVINA!!! HARI MATA HARI - LEJLA
@@Account-br9kc No it wasn't, what are you on about? 😂Bosnia and Herzegovina was third. Russia came in second.
@@DustySmith1 I'm guessing you're not THE Dusty Smith.
Cliff came 2nd in 68, it was 69 that 4 people tied for 1st place.
yes, and by looking at the years, you can see that that comment during 1968 was a "message in advance" for the NEXT year that the video skipped: 1970 directly followed 1968 since the second, third and forth "other 1st places" from 1969 were only shown in the winner compilation.
thus Cliff had a true 2nd place in 1968.
@@Anson_AKBnot true, Cliff had a true FIRST PLACE in 1968
@@paddystrongjaw9995 1968 : first place spain with Massiel "la, la, la", second place UK with Cliff Richards "Congratulations".
or are you denying spain the first place because of politics like dictatorship, language, exchanged singer, alleged vote buying, etc ?
@@Anson_AKB the Vote Buying by Spanish officials
Politics and 'neighborly voting' in Eurovision may prevent a country from getting zero points, or last, or even get them a 1 or 2 places higher than they should, but it wouldn't be enough to get the win. Even in 2022, Ukraine has had an amazing track record of great good songs with great stagings, and this year is no different. The outpouring of support most likely secured them the trophy this year, but it is still a winning song regardless of the war.
I still remember the UK getting zero points from both the jury and the audience in 2021, That was such a good time to laugh at live
If Ukraine decided to go with the original winner, I don't think they would even qualify if not because of the war. Stefania has always been a strong song.
@@Justin-ee1mv In that year 4 countries got 0 points from the public, UK, Germany, the Netherlands and Spain iirc
1983 was actually a song tribute to the Jewish population killed by the Nazi's during world war two, it may seem like a fun song (which it should seem like) but if you search up the backstory, it's very interesting. The song contest was in Germany that year, so it was only fitting to go up there and sing a song saying: I'm alive. I'm pretty sure they had some type of symbol in their outfits (maybe even the outfits themselves) for the yellow star the jews were forced to have back then to identify them from the rest. Anyways, hope you see this as it could explain some things about the political nature of Eurovision to you, and please react to more Eurovision content, keep it up
You are exactly right.
The chorus of the song translates to: “I’m alive, yes I’m still alive. This is the song that grandpa sang yesterday to my dad, and today It’s me”.
Also, the singer is Ofra Haza, rip, she was the voice of Moses's mother in the movie "The Prince of Egypt".
Also Ofra Haza had a big eurodance/synthpop hit: Im Nin' Alu. Various remixes were made with great succes.
Coming from a year in which Israel gave 12 points to Germany I find it a bit distasteful and I am pro Israel as fuck.
Sam got us to second place for the first time in YEARS so yes he was the best we had.....and considering he started by making videos on tik tok through lockdown all the way to the eurovision stage 👏
And he was my winner.
Great song!!
Yes don't knock Sam, he is our saviour in eurovision x
It wasn't that good of a song. Imo it's still better than winner, but nah
First time in nearly 20 years where UK didn't send an embarrassment that didn't challenged for being last
2009 Norway blew it out of the water. They got the most points under the old point system making that 169 even more wild.
I still remember the song " I'm in love with a fairytale even though it hurts, because I don't care if I lose my mind I'm already cursed" cue violin
Your "nightmare inducing" act was sung by Katja Ebstein, who is a German music legend, and this song is still very popular. She actually placed third in Eurovision on two other occasions.
It actually describes scenes in a theatrical play, and one of them is a nightmare so to speak.
Yes, "Eres tú" by Mocedades of Spain is the song of the movie you mentioned. It had a great success in the US (and worldwide) back in 1973 and they sold more than 1 million copies of it just there. They are legends in the hispanic world.
We have a danish copy of that song too, which became very popular :)
@@gittechristensen4277 Oh really? I'd love to hear that!
Best song in eurovision ever.
@@gittechristensen4277They also did a version in their native language, Basque. If Spain had not been under Franco back then the song would have likely been sent to Eurovision in Basque. But link to the Danish version?
Verka Serduchka - the greatest Eurovision Moment ever 🤩🤩
That was also a fantastic year - so many great acts!!
For the Dutch duo in 2014 that you said the woman could make it in Nashville; She is Ilse de Lange. A Dutch country singer that actually played in the Nashville TV Show not too long ago haha
weirdly enough my favourite eurovision performance has gotta be that time in 2016 they brought back a bunch of previous winners to do a parody song during the intermission. it's called "love love peace peace", would love to see your reaction to that one lol
Yes, please!!!!!!
Omg I totally agree! 🙌🏻
You guys should watch Eurovision live from start to finish next year
The Sam Ryder disrespect 😂😂, he is truly amazing, you should absolutely listen to his cover compilations or even that song in full, he's so good.
Guys you need to watch the whole uk 2022 performance. Its brilliant and think you would appreciate it more. 👍
yep definitely need to correct the absolute slander. Sam Ryder is absolutely phenomenal
Yes, do it! He is amazing.
Sam Ryder is a nice guy 🇬🇧❤️
I really hope they don't watch it and pretends to like it just because lots of Brits in the comment section has been trying to convince them to like it.
His song, his voice, his attitude pure winner…..the set, his costume, awful. This is why I fear what the BBC will bring to the mix for 2023, they have lost their creativity.
2003 - that was my favourite song that year, I really loved it!
2009 - the winning song just set a major points record, which was held until they next changed up the points system
2012 - the Russian grandmothers were ADORABLE and we really loved them
2017 - another favourite of mine that got stuck in second place *pouts*
2021 - France went from the most French song ever to their least French song the following year (which was among my favourites, but sadly ended up at the bottom)
2009 was Alexander Ryback. Amazing song
2017 I was messaging all my Bulgarian friends. To think that kid was 17
Poland tried to mimick the Russia in 2012 and babusha band won the theme song for EURO 2012 Football championship
Cliff Richard in 1968 lost by just one point to Spain. In 1969 however there were 4 joint winners so for this list there was no runner up, cause as you say they actually only came 5th. So far the UK has come 2nd 16 times
Ahh Cliff....one of the last great mysteries.
@@kernowchris He is still a Bachelor Boy.
I don't think Cliff is Gay but it is rumoured that his live in Male Secretary, Boyfriend is...
Alexander Rybak won in 2009. I think Daniel mentioned in the previous Eurovision reaction that he followed him on Instagram or You tube ☺️.
The Dutch singers from 2014 Common Linnets are Ilse De Lange and Waylon (named himself after Waylon Jennings). Ilse is a familiar face in Nashville and has recorded several albums there.
Ilse also played a jury member in the TV-series Nashville like she did on the voice of Holland
The UK often ended very high before the rule that every country had to sing in it's own language was abolished. English being a lingua franca meant that English language lyrics were much more accessible to and engaging for the European public than songs in less commonly understood languages.
The 4 way tie was 1969, Cliff Richard competed in 1968, he did get second
you should definitely watch last places for the funsies
but I also recommend third places since they can be just as eurovisiony as the second places and as good as the winners, I always say that if you want to introduce someone to Eurovision you should show them the winners, runner-ups and third places
Better to watch entries per country...just to get an idea what the various countries are about (or in case of some, how broad their selection is genre-wise).
@@swanpride true but it can be a bit too much for newcomers imo
Also it's where Volare finished.
Absolutely! And see how Norway in 1990 was ROBBED! Sure, they may not have deserved the win, but they definitely deserved more than last.
@@Northfan42 Frankly, there is rarely a song in Eurovision which "deserves" last.
Michael Ball is an absolute legend. He was the original Marius in Les Miserables amongst many other things.
Also, Sam's song is amazing & his vocal control is insane. Yeah, the outfit was out there, but the music was fantastic.
Michael Ball is not a sir lol
@@maxfraser1259 I honestly thought that he was. Changed it now.
Ironically if you around to 5th places - there's the original Jean Valjean competing for Ireland, equally ironically the contest was in Paris and the song, which he wrote, is called Born to Sing.
Daniel's sudden change of expression @34:03 when Russia 2012 comes up... priceless! 🤣
Love the stunned look of baffled incomprehension and occasional horror that frequently settles on the face of the guy in the hat. Yep, that's the Eurovision Look.
But he does have an expressive, interested face for the ones he likes.
Yes, there was a tie in 1991. Both Sweden and France got 146 p. According to the tie breaking rules back then, they counted which country got the most 12 p. But both got 4! So they counted which country got the most 10 p. France got 10 p from two countries, but Sweden got 10 p from five countries, so Sweden was the winner.
Apparently, under the current tie breaking rules, France would have won, as they received points from more countries.
@@malcolmrowe9003 Yes, they have changed the tie breaking rules in 2007, so getting low points from many countries trumphs getting high scores from fewer countries.
Sweden got points from 17/21 countries, while France got points from 18/21 countries so France would've won with the 2007 rules, since France gave Sweden 0 p while Sweden gave France 5 p.
But they changed the tie breaking rules again in 2016 to the country that received more points from the televoting is the winner. If they would have had the same points in the televoting, then the country that received points from more countries in the televoting. If they had still been a tie then then the country that recieved the most 12 p in the televoting, if still a tie the 10 p and so on. If they still had been a tie after that, then the running order would have decided, strangely enough, and since Sweden performed 8th and France 9th in the running order Sweden would have won.
They should have just have declared a tie.
@@Asa...S having the winner be the country that gets votes from more countries makes sense to me as it minimises the effect of politicisation of votes. Having it go down to running order sounds daft. At that point you might just as well declare a tie and then see about determining a host for the following year.
The song Theater from 1980 is actually a very wellknown song in Europe and was popular.
The moment he asked "What am I watching?" I wanted to say "yeah, some countries that didn't wanna win but actually scored higher than expected :p"
I love when your faces went confused with my country's (belgium) entrance "Sanomi by Urban Trad" (2003). Fun fact about the song, it is a made-up language with Celtic sounds/tones and we still don't know what it meant. But it was to avoid a choice, in which of our three official languages they would sing. (our three official languages Dutch (Flemish), French and German).
A Made-up language from a Made-Up Country,My Friend:)
1964 runner-up, Matt Monro for the UK was, wait for it Spenser, a London bus driver before becoming a singer. Leaving school at 14, he tried a succession of jobs without remaining in any of them for very long, before National Service beckoned in 1948. Monro became a tank driving instructor in the British armed forces and was posted to Hong Kong.
His recordings include the UK Top 10 hits: "Portrait of My Love", "My Kind of Girl", "Softly As I Leave You", "Walk Away" and "Yesterday" (originally by The Beatles). He also recorded several film themes such as "From Russia with Love" for the James Bond film of the same name, "Born Free" for the film of the same name and "On Days Like These" for The Italian Job, original with Michael Caine.
When you comment about the number of points between 1st and 2nd, remember that the number of available points increases as the number of entries does - in the early years there were only around a dozen entries and these days there are well over 40. Also there was the change to the voting system in the mid-2010s where each country announces the jury points and the televote points, so that instantly doubled the number of available points.
Would love to see you react to the full performance from 1983. Ofra Haza had such a beautiful voice-she should’ve won, not just for her singing abilities but for the song’s background
I loved Ofra Haza - great lyrics + melodies and everything. And as a former goth, I treasure the Temple of Love ;)
Schlager Lucas has done compilation to the last place (all 10 places actually), so easy find. As you will see first 5 years having just 10-15 entrees showed even last place being just as strong. You will see A LOT of zero point winners from mid-sixties onwards, in particular Norway and Turkey.
It's always fun to see an "outsiders'" reaction to Eurovision, I thought you were respectable and understanding in both the videos! There's so much to unpack when it comes to understanding the meaning, politics and progression of Eurovision throughout its history. I'd highly recommend you watch the 2023 contest if possible, that's how you get an idea of what it really is nowadays
You really need to watch Sam Ryder's SPACE MAN full performance, nay, watch the Queen's Platinum Jubilee performance as Sam Ryder is a national hero. He brought the contest back to the UK public with his devotion, his honesty and his pure love for Eurovision. Do not rule him out as you have heard a chorus. Watch the whole song! Do it, and do it now!
what do you meeeeeeean was that our best foot forward? yes... yes it was, did you hear that man? we have flopped in the euros for a while now till this angelic british viking stepped up and brought us back from limbo
Yes, Erés Tu is the song in Tommy Boy, great ear :D
As for the margins, it has all to do with the different voting systems: now half the votes are awarded by a jury, and half by televote, from all participating countries, but there have been 9 different voting systems since 1997, when televoting was first tried.
Talking about 2009: all participating countries (except San Marino, because of the size of the Country) had both a jury and a televote, combining the votes you got points for 10 songs (12, 10, 8-1) that were then added up. Useless to say that the more participants, the higher the points pool, the bigger the margins. Since 2016 they're even larger, because each participant Country gives twice the points: half from a jury (12, 10, 8-1) and half from the televote (12, 10, 8-1), so basically if you have 40 participants, you have 80 entities voting.
Russian Grannies were fundraising for Church rebuilding back in 2010.
When you asked 'Do you think these people get asked in their everyday was that you'? The act you were on was 1988.I know for a fact Scott Fitzgerald says 'YES'!!! He was in first place till the last votes came in and an unknown Canadian called Celine Dion beat him by 1 point for Switzerland!
Also Cliff did not come 5th! he cam 2nd in '68. the following year '69 they did not show due to 4 way tie for 1st and skipped to '70.
"Eres tu" was a hit in USA in 1973, selling more than 1 million copies and making more than 100 versione in different langugaes around the world

Been waiting for this reaction - love so many of the runner-ups 😀 - and the 1964 runner-up, Matt Munroe, sang the James Bond theme for From Russia with Love (and the theme to the movie, Born Free).
And the Italian job

Sam came first after the judges vote, and Ukraine was fourth or fifth. When the public votes came in, Ukraine then won, which had been anticipated by many.
Yeah, UK was the jury favorite, while Ukraine was the televote favorite.
UK was 5th in the televote, while Ukraine was 4th in the jury vote.
No country that has been 5th in the televote has ever won.
I maintain that, had the war not happened, Spain would have won
This is a poor argument. Winners often have nothing to do with the jury vote. I would love for us to have won but sometimes you just need to suck it up and move on. What if we had lost to someone else, there would be another sob story here in it’s place. Ukraines situation just made the sob story easy to write.
@@hjt091 Since Spain was 3rd in both jury vote and televote it seems like a possibility.
We will never know, it was very close between UK (466 p) and Spain (459).
"Stefania" is still a good song, war or no war, so it would have been in the top and might have won anyway, but perhaps not getting 12 p from almost every televote and winning by 165 p over the runner up.
Those 12 p would probably been spread out more, to UK, Spain, Ukraine, but also Serbia and Sweden would have got a larger share or those perhaps.
If Russia had been in the contest, perhaps they would have been there in the top too getting some of those points.
Your Eurovision reactions are cool! Imo you should react to 2022 songs or even the grand final (but that's like 4 hours long so requires a lot of editing.
Cliff Richards was a legit 2nd placer. The year after (1969) was the one with four winners.
Verka is legendary in Eurovision, I was is Poland a month ago and there was a poster for her show 15yrs after they were on Eurovision. Australia is a shock (as an Aussie I can say this) but we have been a huge supporter of Eurovision so we were invited to compete in 2015 and came 2nd the next year. You guys need to watch all of it, Sam Ryder has an amazing voice and that's the best UK have done in 25yrs (they have been a joke of Eurovision for years).
You should laugh!!!! This why we love it in Europe, it’s the funny artists that we love
Yeah, they let Australia in the competition in 2016…much to everyone’s surprise as clearly it’s very much not in Europe 🤣 I’m a Brit living in Australia and was surprised how into Eurovision Aussies are, so it’s nice for them to be included. I used to have Eurovision drinking parties back in the UK during Eurovision…doesn’t really work here in Australia as it’s 4am when the live show is on 🤦🏻♀️
Have you guys done the Eurovision winners countdown? That’d be good to see.
Australia entered in 2015 with Guy Sebastian- Tonight Again 😉 And as I remember Australia was one of the interval acts in 2014.
Please check out Guildo Horns Eurovision entry from 1998, worth a watch. He came 7th from Germany and has everything Eurovision should have. 😀
Loved this, for Eurovision find the worst outfit you can (Glitter is a must )grab a bottle, head to a party and let the drinking game commence. 😃
Well, I don't know about the movie Tommy Boy, but what I CAN tell you is that "Eres tú" was, I believe, the first song without a single bit of English in it to hit the billboard list. It was at the very least the first song entirely in Spanish to do so.
*For the record, I cannot at the moment for the life of me remember if Kyu Sakamoto's "Sukiyaki" (As the English title came to be) was earlier or later, because that was also not in English and MAY have been earlier.
Sam Ryder is a National Treasure here in the UK! He is the nicest guy you could meet and has an amazing voice. You should review the whole song 😁 Eurovision is all about being extra so that was pretty tame 😆
My overarching memory of Eurovision will always be Sir Terry Wogan and his commentary. Graham Norton who took over after him is really good with those cutting comments but I'll always remember Tel and his sharp quips.
You should also react to 3rd position songs at Eurovision. A lot of gems there!!
THIS IS INCORRECT!!! IN 2006 RUNNER-UP WAS BOSNIA AND HERZEGOVINA!!! HARI MATA HARI - LEJLA
It is funny how you mention Milli Vanilli in 1990, and didn't notice how one of them (Pilatus) was a backup singer in 1987.

Gigliola Cinquetti won the contest with "Non ho l'età" (i'm too young / not yet adult) in 1964 when she was only 16 years old.

Hi there! I'm from Israel. Loved your reactions to Eurovision. YOU GUYS NEED TO STOP EVERYTHING THAT YOU'RE DOING RIGHT NOW AND WATCH THE 2023 EUROVISION RUNNER UP SONG 🤣🤣🤣🟢🟢🟢 Best ever
Everyone voting for Ukraine in 2022 regardless of song was a beautiful expression of European Unity.🙏

Brilliant boys😂😂🤣🫶🏽a very enjoyable 43 minutes😂😂👏🏽👏🏽
You really need to listen and watch the UK entry in its entirety. Sam is amazing
Space Man is an anthem if you listen to more than 5 seconds people were singing along to it.
Im a swede but i always prefered Islands Selma with "All out of luck'(so catchy!!) insted of swedish winner Charlotte Nilssoms "Take me to your heaven" which is a typicle Abba pastich schlager pop from that time ..
Tad hurt by your comments about Sam atvthe end there, you need to remember between 1997 and 2022, we had a win in 97 a 2nd place and a 3rd place before this year, all the rest struggled to be middle of the score board and were usually bottom 3 if not dead last. Sam getting second was the uk saying, "you know what, we will actually take this seriously for once".
Three out of 25 because of the Tories, and it’s shows how bad it was
18:45 it's because in that year israel still didn't have couler TV, while the rest of the eurovision countries had. So they (the government) wanted the viewers to feel the celebration and enjoy the colorful event (eurovision). (Yellow, on a black and white TV, look more colorful, and it's unique and can be identified easily as not white clothes, but colorful clothes.)
As for Sam Ryder you need to watch his whole performance. He was great. Also you don't realise how big Eurovison is around Europe. It's a whole week long event with heats for the countries that aren't in the founding 5 who put up the money and created the competition and went straight through. So all week there is tv coverage showing performances and interviews. Sam Ryder is also a really lovely bloke and he will have got votes for that too.
Not to underestimate how much Europe hates the United Kingdom right now.
We basically told them to f**k off.
The bass player of the Germany 2nd place in 1987 was actually later one of the two Milli Vanilli!
Space Man is an absolute JAM!! And the best entry the UK have had in a long time! When that guitar solo started, I really thought he’d done it!!
"she could make it in Nashville, I think"
She kinda did. She went to Nashville and worked with producer Barry Beckett to record her album "World of Hurt".
Her name is Ilse DeLange.
Matt Munro was one of the best English singers but unfortunately died quite young. Loved watching the stream reminded me of going to a holiday camp in the 70s and seeing the couple who sang sing little birdie live they were so good even though they were getting old!
The first five notes of the chorus to Malta 2005 (Angel) is the same as/copied from Jennifer Rush's "The Power Of Love" (which Celine Dion made a famous cover of). I think that's what makes you think that you've heard it before...
@embracethesuck21 Eurovision is to us what the Super Bowl is to you in the US, but with music. Abba were the first to win with a song not sung in their native language. Would love to translate the swedish songs for you guys.. they are hysterical😄 especially when you read the text in english.. love from a proud Swed❤️❤️
Matt Monro (1964) was also the singer for the Bond-Song ‘From Russia with Love’
I love how people are arguing about the points and rankings in comments…we’re all so passionate about Eurovision! It’s the music Olympics! Australia, yes, we were gonna end up in there, we drive everyone nuts about Eurovision😂
Well, unlike the Americans, you are good sports, hence you are very welcome to bring your particular brand of crazy.

I've forgotten most of these, Sir Cliff Richard is still very around and working think he's sold well in excess of 200 million over his career and he's most associated with The Shadows again forgotten that they entered, many from the UK have stayed within the industry,Michael Ball is a big West End and Broadway theatre Star, although ventured into albums and works quite a bit with Alfie Boe who's known mainly for Opera
Eurovision is always a lot of drama. And lots of discussion. This all part of the show and why we love it.
1969 when we had 4 winners isn't the same year as 1968 when Cliff Richard took 2nd place. Sweden won in 1991 because we had a handful more of 10 points than France. We had the same number of 12 points, thus they went down the line to see who had more 10, 9 , 8 and so on.
2009 Norway was Ryback, he had the highest score ever up until that point. So he blew it out of the water.
2007, 2012 and 2023 runner ups are all epic, fun songs that are still, and will always be, fan favorites.
Russia 2012... so that's the song that echoes in my head every now and then.
Frank Sinatra described Matt Monroe as “The only Limey that can sing!”
that 1971 and 1973 Spain flag nearly gave me a heart attack 🤣🤣
Had to double check for the year 😅
You need to react to some of the low placed songs that are very popular in ESC community. Songs like "Horehronie" by Kristína (that song was seen as a Top 10 contender before the contest in 2010 but it ended second to last in semifinal (16th out of 17) and didn't qualify to the final), "Rockefeller Street" by Getter Jaani (this song is known by a very popular nightcore version), "Run away" by Sunstroke Project and Olia Țira (just one phrase to describe it: "Epic Sax Guy") are one of the most popular low placed ESC songs and there're many other examples.
I loved it "Horehronie" by Kristína (Slovakia). I was so sad that she didn't make it to the final
2014: she actually was in a few episodes of the final season of the tv show Nashville!
The older songs are so wholesome :)
But guys - you have to remember that Eurovision was just a handful of countries until 1990. When Toto Cotugno won with "Unite, Unite Europe!" Things changed since that song very much.
