The song around the 10 min mark, you mentioned checking out, that's 2016's Ukraine "1944" by Jamala. She's singing about her grandmother's experience, being deported by Russia from her Crimean home to Central Asia in the 1940s. Russia made a stink about this song entering, claiming it to be political commentary on the 2014 occupation of the Crimean, but the EBU judged this song to not be political. It is well worth to watch Jamalas full performance.

and then the RUSSIANS (as opposed to the Soviets in 1944) turned around and have inflicted even worse carnage now, driven my a complete madman. They have been expelled, and frankly I dont ever expect them to be reinstated... unless the entire Russian populace pulls its collective head out and stops empowering monsters like Putin with acquiesence.

@@pizza1354 Because Flo Rida was in it. People are not keen on americans in Eurovision as a whole, and they're even less enthusiastic towards established artists competing. There's this unwritten rule in Eurovision that the artists should be quite unknown OR at most "Eurovision sweethearts" coming back to compete again. Because otherwise it isn't "I send one of my artists to make a name and represent me" but "how big is my wallet and who's topping the charts lately?".

I had to go listen to the song because I didn't remember it, meanwhile I can still hum the tune and probably sing some lyrics of Zitti e buoni, Dark side, 10 years, Tout l'univers, Voilá, Shum, and even Mata Hari xD it's not a memorable song, and an internationally established artist has an added pressure of being compared to their known work. I mean, The Rasmus is very popular in central Europe but they did abysmally in Eurovision last year, no surprise either. But also extra minus points for being American, probably :D

Have in mind that all the spectacular props need to be removed within minutes before next participant takes the stage. And, of course, the new prop has to be set up too. The host broadcaster in Italy this year had some issues keeping up with rearranging the stage between entries and the presenters had to chit chat and make time go by for them to finish (only like 20-40 secs or so, but it happened multiple times and was obvious).

As a eurovision fan, i'm always sceptical about this guide video's, because most of them really don't understand eurovision. This is quite allright tho, pretty accurate although also take it with a grain of salt. Especially how they speak negatively of 'a lot of generic pop songs' which are often very, very good, i think generic doesn't really exist even, each song is unique, and much better than so called original or ethnic songs. The examples he gave were all amazing, strong bangers of songs. Nothing generic or negative about it. He could just have said pop, instead of 'a lot of generic pop songs'. Because then you could also speak about 'generic rock songs'
Like i said total package counts And like you said, every song is different.
(And slovenia 2022 and italy 2011 was not funk, but more jazz-disco influenced)
And yes in eurovision the total package counts but of course vocals play a big role! I defenitely recommend checking out turkey and israel in eurovision!

I'm Romanian so i think i can share this with confidence. One thing that America will not understand EVER about Eurovision is that, this song contest is to feel good, make a show ,enjoy and celebrate yourself as a country/culture and other countries and a way to land support to a country that maybe didn't have a good year and hey if we happened to win fine that is great and if we don't that is fine to we had a blast at least.
Don't understand me wrong Eurovision its not a silly contest it means so much for us Europeans it brings us closer as a continent through music but the wholesomeness of the ''we are here to vibe' and vibe only" even if that means we make a fool out of ourselves sometimes is what makes it ten times better and is something that America (USA) doesn't posses because you want to be the worlds best and that does not apply here because is not only about that.

Kalush orchestras Stefania which was mostly folk-ish for rap?I'd say Samanta Tīna was opera-ish no? No Urban Symphony for folk (or whatever the category was called) sexy without efendi? Chaotic/less serious without Citi Zēni or Jendrik? Go-a and Hatari as chaotic? One cube gets into 'crazy stage props' but not what Gjon's tears had?

The song at 11:05 for Greece is considered less serious because it sounds less serious but it's about the ravages of the Greek economic crisis.
Several songs in Eurovision can sound very light or even dumb but some they have a deeper meaning underneath the catchy tune and funny performance.
One French song (that never was in the Eurovision song contest) is a perfect example of that, it's called "le petit train" from the group / duo "Rita Mitsouko" and dates back to the 80's. It's about the trains going to the death camps during WW2. So, really not a light subject but the song is super catchy and if you don't pay real attention to the lyrics and analyze them in details, you'd think its simply a great and light 80's rock / pop song.

I think you Americans can't really appreciate Eurovision because you are too addicted to what the media is giving you. It's not American Idol, thankfully. These aren't just English songs, thankfully. They are not famous singers but that does not mean that they are not good. The songs often, even if modern, contain in the text and musically what is tradition of their country. It is not flattening towards the American model but honoring one's roots.
however Maneskin have been successful thanks to Eurovision, I also mention Abba, Celin Dion
