    • @BigStib
      @BigStib Před 2 lety

      @@anoldfogeysfunwell, it was seen as a more humane punishment (at a time of escalating crime in swelling British cities) than execution or imprisonment. The latter would often be on rotting prison hulks as Britain didn't go in for large prisons until later. You worked your (hard) time and could be emancipated, becoming a normal colonial subject. For many, it would have been better than a (short) life in the disease-ridden alleys of London, crushing labour in a dangerous mill or foundry, or a swift drop on a short rope. Penal codes had been made very harsh in this period as a deterrent to increased lawlessness. But a close look at the stats show it was more complicated in enforcement than people realise. Stealing from strangers, things that were purely for money not survival, and repeatedly were more likely to get you the top end tariff than a hungry person filching an apple where they lived. With few/no police, many offenders were turned in by informants, which happened more where they were strangers in a community or had reason for that community to want rid of them (rightly or wrongly). Things which threatened social order were harshly treated - riot and rebellion was common in this period. A significant proportion of the Australian transported fell into the 'political prisoner' category. The example of the threat of transportation for damage to a stone bridge would also be seen as reasonable. That would not have been a minor matter for all sorts of reasons, social and economic.

    Mandarin (Chinese) has a similar structural form in where they place words to English. You know how in French and Spanish rather than say a Blue Cup, they turn it around "Cup blue" that kind of thing. In that regard Mandarin and English are actually similar , and without any tonal stuff like in Asian languages, non of the Masculine and Feminine in Latin based languages (French Spanish Italian Portuguese) so they just have to learn the English equivalent words, and worry less about grammar. Of course the rest is very different but there is so much English speaking TV and Cinema out of the UK and in particular the USA, many Chinese folk have a lot of exposure to English. It does not surprise me Chinese people tend to pick up English fast

    It just very unpredictable.
    In the south east, where I live, we hit highs of 36-37 degrees in high summer.
    I have to say though that I’ve sat in the garden sunbathing in March and a month later we’ve had heavy snow.
    We also don’t have tropical storms, earthquakes or large tornadoes.
    It’s just that it’s so unpredictable that we talk about it a lot.
    Here you can get four seasons in one day.

    English has, by far, the largest vocabulary of any language. About 250,000. French, by comparison (for random example, unlike Al, I don't mind the French) has about 50,000. English is the language to master if you're serious about writing, prose, poetry or lyrics. No other language has the scope.
