The Goldilocks Kayak Motor

  • The Bixby kayak motor is so far, the best fit for a kayak that I have ever used. It's too easy to overpower a tiny plastic boat that is only designed to go 5 or 6 miles an hour tops. For the backwater, protected areas that I like to explore and fish, you don't need much. Surely there are some that might argue that you don't need ANY motor. The purest paddlers often say that. But if you have any physical issue that prevents you from getting on the water for any length of time, you might find that opinion to be more of an option. A rule that can be bent so you don't spend another Saturday on the couch.
No motor that I've found so far is absolutely perfect for various reasons, but this little fits juuust right.

Marty, I will always watch your videos, but to be honest I miss the days when you would take a trolling motor you found and construct a way to put it on your kayak. I really miss that. Sadly I can't afford a motor that costs more than I can get a jon boat for and it takes away the creativity and problem solving that is a part of being a waterman. Hope you had a good holiday. All the best.

It's great seeing you make videos again. I've enjoyed your videos for many years. You've inspired me to do some additions to my own kayak, and you are one of our inspirations to make our own CZcams channel. I look forward to what you have in store for your new adventures in life for 2024. Happy New Year.

For the tiller on my sailing canoes I set up a t bar with a push pull rod. It worked great and it easier to lock on a setting with a bungee than foot steering.

Nice one Marty. Often thought about something along the lines of a Pelican Kayak & motor, as getting old and not able to paddle much.

I tried to mount a Newport Vessels Kayak trolling motor on the back of my Catch Mode 110 with a u-joint tiller extention handle and it was a absolute disaster. I raised my seat 4 inches (PVC DIY Base) and have.a Yak Attack Black Pack in the back, it just didn't work out at all to do height issues and things being in the way. Plus the Skeeg is kind of crucial to tracking well in this Yak. So I felt I needed a motor on the bow. Pelican doesn't make a bow motor mount and their are not any 3rd party options either.. So I took matters into my own hands, removed the front handle and DIYed a sturdy Bow Mount Base on the Bow. Then I quick release installed a Motorguide Xi3 on the Bow. I created a base that securely holds it out of a black poly cutting board, rubber boots and bolts. I just upgraded it to Pinpoint GPS and let me tell you... it's awwwesome! . With the GPS features like Anchor Lock and Heading Lock.. I spend more time fishing and a lot less time steering. Im about to add a Lowarance HDS Chartplotter!/Fish Finder to go full auto pilot to waypoints on a map! It's def heavy on the front so I added good pair of Scotty Stabilizers which def help. I NEVER want to tip over. Overall very satisfied with my mods and I keep tinkering to dial everything in. I have watched your videos in the past and wanted to share my experience with rigging a Catch Mode 110. Thanks for all your videos!

First time I bought a trolling motor was after my car accident because I could no longer pedal while recovering or paddle for that matter. Then I discovered that I will probably never be able to peddle/paddle as recovery was taking forever and so I got R3 30 lbs motor and then Minn Kota Endurance 30 lbs motor. I have been eyeballing bixby for ages but price.... OMG... but its portability is really really appealing because i could use it with my blow up kayaks and then on my hobie and the fact that I do not have to do mental gymnastics taking minn kota out while lifting seat, tilting etc etc... is very appealing also. I know people use that other trolling motor that people sell for $450 but it would only work for hobie. Honestly when you have a trolling motor... your entire experience makes paddling so so so much better. Ok I get that people want the exercise but you never really understand advantages if you paddle down the river or in sheltered spots. In more open areas with current or wind or whatever... returning back 6 miles against the elements.... you hop off your kayak jubilant as lamb in spring time instead of exhausted. And you can't put a price on having that level of energy when back at the dock.

i run a Minn 55 on a 11.5 ft sit in pelican .so i have higher gunnel to water, then your sit on tops , and it great, and could handle more thrust, yet plenty with the 55lbs as i am disabled, thus adding the motor allows me to still enjoy kayaking and fishing ,, i have it tiller rigged with a home made mount , and the controller built into the side of the deck, almost stealth like, no head on the shaft so i add a flag and every one thinks its just a flag pole and not a motor ,due too the controller and tiller being stealthy ,i get approached all the time asking how im moving forward lol been asked too sell it countless times , love your approach of give it a try , , that what ive done , and glad i did, been running it since 2008 , yup still original haul and motor, second battery, just a deep cell marine ,run time is like 8 h plus, never been able to drain it yet on a signal run charge , i found while fishing you can travel some crazy distances, motor so nice to get back home with , over paddling

I agree with you that accessibility _can_ be a good thing. There are people who have physical or age limitations and cannot paddle for one reason or another. My only comment on the subject is I think the accessibility argument is largely overexaggerated. Most of the people you see with motorized kayaks are able-bodied individuals who are perfectly capable of paddling or pedaling, they just choose not to...which is completely fine, their choice, but I don't like the motorized kayak industry hiding behind the accessibility argument.
