  • RTÉ News reports on the death of Kenyan long-distance runner Kelvin Kiptum, who made history in October 2023 by winning the Chicago marathon in two hours and 35 seconds to beat his fellow countryman Eliud Kipchoge's previous mark by more than 30 seconds, thus becoming the only person to ever run the marathon under two hours and one minute in a record-eligible race, and also breaking his all-time best that he had set after winning the London marathon in April of that same year (two hours and one minute). Having ran three of the seven fastest marathons in history, Kiptum had been heavily tipped for the marathon gold at the 2024 Summer Olympics in Paris. Sadly, on 11th February 2024, Kiptum and his coach Gervais Hakizimana were both killed following a traffic accident along the Eldoret-Kaptagat road in the southwest of Kenya. At only 24 years of age, Kiptum became yet another sports star to tragically die in the prime of his career.
