    "I still believe that I can run a course record in Berlin, if not a world record it is a course record. I don't know which one will come in but I will call it a course record."
    The current course record of Berlin is also the world record so if he's aiming to run a course record, means he's aiming at the official world record.

    • @peterlewis3540
      @peterlewis3540 Před rokem +15

      He races so infrequently, that when he does enter a particular race, its with a purpose in mind.
      Statistics have shown, if he enters a race, then he usually wins it.
      He has won Berlin on four occasions, and set his WR there, so the only reason he is showing up, is to lower his WR.
      Only two athletes have ever gone below 2hrs 2min, himself, and Bekele.
      Bekele is a spent force, so to improve on his WR time, will make it increasingly difficult to beat in the future.

    • @peterlewis3540
      @peterlewis3540 Před rokem +2

      The reason he can continue aged 37, when others are a spent force at that age, is that he only races when he needs to.
      All other athletes need to race to make ends meet, hence their shortened career after 35yrs or so, their bodies are wrecked or unable to take the stress of training at such a high level.
      Kipchoge has made his money, from lucrative sponsorship deals and endorsements, and his incredible consistency in setting WR at the marathon. he only races when he feels ready.and is able to give it everything.
      If he is not ready, then he does not race, so his body has more recovery time, than most other elite runners.
      This is why he is running at elite level, long after most runners are a spent force, because he has remained injury free, and can pick and choose which races he wants to run.
      He is under no financial pressure to race when his body tells him to rest.

  • @shandytorok259

    IMO, when he says such things as "good race" "let's run a very good race" he is thinking of WR! And when he improves a WR, he doesn't just improves it a bit...he improves a BIG CHUNK on it, knowing Kipchoge's mindset, and discipline I guess he is going for a SUB 2 now in BRLN, he knows there is not much time left for him, next year Paris Olympics-which he very well may win AGAIN-then only God knows....but now, he wants to demonstrate to everyone SUB2 is possible as we all know, he has done it once!

Can you imagine if they had run against each other maybe 10 times they could have pushed and paced each other to under 2 hours several times. As it is since no one else is in their class they get no pushing or pacing over the last 10 miles. He will definitely break the world record of 2:01:39. He might also go under 2 hours. This is based on the fact that he ran the 4th fastest marathon this year on a course (Tokyo) he's not familiar with, lost 10-12 seconds by running the wrong way, and that they ran against a strong wind.
    Also, people questioning Kipchoge on several occasions if a person can run under 2 hours in a normal marathon might push him to run a sub-2-hour marathon.
    Furthermore, Kipchoge said, what he will run will either be a world record or a course record. His particular words were, "I still believe that I can run a course record in Berlin. If not a world record, it is a course record. " From these words, I guess he assumes 1:59 is already a world record (but we all know it's not an unofficial wr) and might go below it, hence creating an official sub-2, or come close to it, thus creating a new course record in Berlin (and still a new official wr based on what we know).
    Or what did he mean, because the official world record is at 2:01:39? Listen at 3:05.

    You can tell that the man is racing against time in both senses of the word (marathon time and age). He KNOWS that sub 2 is possible, he KNOWS that he deserves to be the first to do it, but he also knows that his window can't stay open forever.
    As for the upcoming event - like you said, it mostly boils down to his form at the day. Sure, he is a veritable machine, but everyone who runs knows that you can have days where you don't believe your watch because you might be a lot slower or faster than it feels.
