- The Right Opinion - What Is Article 13 And Why Are People Worried About It? | TRO
Most of my videos I put out on my channel are topics that I think will have your interest, this is a general philosophy because I like to entertain people and try and find a balance between what I care about and what you care about, equally it’s a learning process, finding out this new information and sharing with you guys is a great experience for me.
However, every now and then, I know I have to make a video that won’t be the most fun to make, and will require a lot of detail, and today is that day my friends. I held off this for a while but I knew that I wouldn’t forgive myself if I didn’t raise my voice.
So let’s talk about the EU, because during my time in America, I’ve been surprised to find that many people actually do not have a clue how it operates. So consider the next five to ten minutes a little crash course. EU is an abbreviation for the European Union, an organisation of countries that forms its own absolute body, often cooperating and creating legislation to maintain a more cohesive relationship.
It was initially borne out of the fact that politically, Europe has been a bit of a mess, and to provide almost a grounding, a central body would stabilise the lawmaking process, very modest intentions. Over the years, this has developed, with new institutions and initiatives being integrated and established, typically through treaties, which are essentially contracts between countries, that’s a very simplified definition but I just want you to have a general gist. The European Union that we know today was formed by a treaty in 1992 known as the Maastricht Treaty, which aided the transition of the European Union beyond just an economic community.
I’m not going to go into too many more details because they’re not entirely relevant, and honestly it’s not the most fun things to hear, however, it is of importance to have some basic information so that we can then apply that and think critically about what’s going to be discussed today and its implications. Because the European Union has been expanding its control over many different disciplines over the last few decades, and the internet has been of their interest for a while.
And there are many concerns over the ownership of intellectual property on the internet, given the new international realms it expands over. In the past everything that we watch on the TV has been run through a limited number of corporations who adhere to regulations that they can be reprimanded under if they don’t follow, the new domains granted by the internet has created a plethora of content that is exceptionally hard to regulate. However, over the last few years, we have become increasingly aware of this, with this awareness being raised, there have been filters instated to assure that people aren’t profiting off copyrighted content. For example, someone uploading a copyrighted song on CZcams, may have it removed or monetised by the original artist. The internet is a place of new opportunity, but it also is a state of great lawlessness, many of us will remember the ads that they’d put at the start of a film saying “You wouldn’t steal a film”, because online makes all these forms of media much more accessible.
With this in mind, many sites like CZcams are overbearing in the imposition of copyright restrictions, with many people, myself included, that they give too much power to the actual claimant to be the arbiter of the content. I’ve had this experience myself with my content in the past, situations where I’ve been claimed, appealed, and the appeal goes straight to the owner, and they reject it because they like money more than fair use, the only way I resolved it that time was by threatening a lawsuit. I don’t fuck around.
It’s pretty much understood at this point, that the internet isn’t going anywhere, however, this also means that other competitors, and governments will be under increasing pressure to respond to such freedoms, with new restrictions. Now, we’ve seen this in this in the US and the EU, this is not a new thing, we already have copyright directives for the internet to try and prevent illegal usage of content, although it is unavoidable to an extent.
But the European Union really want to up the regulation, with their new copyright directive, that closes in on many of the issues that they feel they haven’t been stringent enough on in the past. The most notorious component of this little document is something known as Article 13, which has prompted backlash and outcry amongst many of us internet dwellers. This outrage has been amplified by a collective of media outlets that have been reporting on the content.
EDITING CREDITS BELOW: This video is a tad late, had issues, but we're here. Ignore the vidcon comments, they're no longer accepting suggestions, I'll still be there though (I should have edited it out soon enough).
Making good progress on Article 13 with negotiations facing strong challenges, we are definitely promoting the right sort of scrutiny, and you can continue that scrutiny below. The 21st of January is when the trilogue talks are supposed to have begun but have stuttered significantly so I am optimistic we're making the right sort of change.

Very well made. Exactly what i'd expect from ryou
I love you posh senpai
The thing is, the EU is just as good for country's economies as it is shady and bad at making laws and being transparent. Ideally, we would reform the way the EU is established, but like you said there isn't enough individual investment from people to make it happen.
ISPs (Internet Service Providers) are not the same as Edge Providers; Google is an Edge Provider, whereas AT&T is an ISP. ISPs provide ACCESS to edge providers (they provide the means to communicate with Edge Providers and applications), whereas Edge Providers are simply a thing you are communicating with (and also provide a service, whatever service that may be).
As for Net Neutrality, I must state that Net Neutrality is needed, as without it, ISPs will have the authority to decide whom I can and can NOT communicate with (they can decide what applications and Edge Providers I can and can NOT use). I have read the Order that concerns Net Neutrality, and it ultimately boils down to "The FCC does not want ISPs impeding communication, therefore we will impose a new set of restrictions to prevent such abuse of power by ISPs". The FCC board of 2005, 2010 and 2015 did NOT like what the ISPs were doing to their customers and the market in general, so they acted accordingly.
TRO, if you want more details on Net Neutrality, please ask me or simply consult "The Hated One" and "PSA Sitch" as they have made videos that have made my point.
Knowing the EU and how they do things I do think they will pass it. Sorry but the way things going nowadays it would just be a matter of time before they pass it.😔👎

I think people don't like that they weren't elected, at such a big position, by the people. We in america also have our own major positions that don't have us have a say. Like secretary of defense and the president's cabinet's. But these positions are tiny compared to a one system Congress and Senate elected by other officials.
I think people are fully aware of the system and just don't like it. Just because someone doesn't agree doesn't mean they aren't knowledgeable.

@@florida_mane6267 nope. memes are for normies now
The issue with most of what the EU is saying is that they don't understand how uploading content to CZcams etc. works. if the system was designed differently at the start, article 13 wouldn't be any where near as decisive but it doesn't line up with how the internet currently works, it's like the legislation creators got their information from a 90s video about how to use AOL

"And thus I stared at the Fifth Horseman, wearing a green cloak and a laptop in his right hand. 'I am Article 13. I am the slayer of memes and joy all 'round the internet. Thats why youtube wont let common people upload anymore
Ok but how does a European law affect us American citizens?
The European parliament affects the internet in huge ways. Like sites conforming to their laws.
I'll give you an example.
fsmrmetroid.blogspot.com
While this site gives you notices about it conforming, bigger sites are put on blast much harder. Twitter will ban memes and most media because Europe is still part of the internet, and Europe doesn't want to see your weeb shit.
CZcams will be worse than it is, and most content creators will go homeless if they don't become pretty much corporate. Jokes and behavior against the parliament will be censored in the name of European censorship. This is again because Europe isn't Korea, and Europe still relies on internet.
No one gets arrested for a joke
"I am a Euroskeptic"
Good. I'm strongly against leaving the EU, but we should be very skeptical of it. My reasoning for staying is benefits outweigh the detriments. That comes from a skepticism of all governments, not just the EU however. I'm glad I can agree with some leave people.

Good on you, never "fuck around" no matter how trivial, Letting people get away with something is always a slippery slope.
Well, full disclosure, I don't involve myself in politics whatsoever. This is mainly because I don't like discussing things I have lacking knowledge on, and reading up on politics is very, very boring (to me, anyway).
Now, this makes me the exact target for this video, and I get that. But like you said, this stuff is very heavy, and I'm not the sponge to this information that I'd like to be. I understand a million more things about this article now, though (because I didn't even know about it until now, lol) and its implications are... vague, but worrying.
I'm not politically driven in any way, so I have no desire to speak up about this. I literally have no negative experiences to ride off. If it affects someone I care about, even one of my favourite CZcamsrs, maybe then I'll get riled up, but until then I'm just going to stand back and let what happens happen
I'm with you on that one. I still don't fully grasp it and how it's gonna work, but one commenter said it's having trouble even getting off the ground since so many are against it. So I guess that gives us hope for our faves on here and elsewhere. Especially since the intentions are so vague and weirdly worded it's hard to understand without someone explaining and even then that's guesswork. I guess we'll all have to see and find out in the end.
So essentially what this comment boils down to is "I'm a sponge, a slave, and I don't deserve rights, because the limited freedoms I'm given under the law are a boring concept to me and therefore I'm uninterested in whatever may come of it and essentially am undeserving of whatever rights may be."
Why did you write this comment, since your opinion is obviously based exclusively in your purposeful ignorance (by your own admission) and essentially is worth pretty much nothing since you don't care? Or is it that you do care, since you felt the need to say anything, but it still really doesn't matter because obviously you're so apathetic you couldn't be bothered to look into this yourself until someone did all of the intellectual heavy lifting for you?
You know how people compare normies to NPCs? That's you, and I would say I pity you, except you've done this to yourself and essentially that just makes you a useful idiot to people who actually are invested in how the world works.
@@Blurredborderlines Orrr not everyone has to be involved in politics if they don't want to??? Because sometimes it's hard to grasp like this??? Way to go insulting someone you don't know and saying they don't deserve rights on the sole fact politics don't interest them. Plus they said they would like to be the sponge that could absorb the needed information, as would I. But even another commenter said they tried reading it for an hour and it was a bunch of mumbo jumbo. Get off your high horse.
@@xobunnyfangsxo The part where politics dictates pretty much every aspect of modern Life, but you don't want to be involved because that would mean having to educate yourself?
Any horse would seem high to you, I'm sure, when you generally have no basis of reference whatsoever, yet you would say something as blatantly ignorant as "I'm not interested in politics", while at the same time you feel the need to comment. By your logic, you shouldn't have the freedom to say anything at all, because you completely take advantage with no basis of reference, the founding principles that dictate your ability to even have such an uninformed, lack of an opinion. If it was the case, you wouldn't care right, because "it just is what it is"?
It's not that you're not interested, you just feel entitled to the right of an opinion without having to do any sort of legwork to legitimately understand what you're having an opinion on in the first place. It's why I say it's worthless, because by your own admission it doesn't mean anything because "you don't care".
@@Blurredborderlines Nice job twisting my words because that's literally not what I said. Some people just aren't politically driven, and unlike people like you don't make people feel bad about it when they are or aren't. Have a good day.

Great video!
Felling sad that I can't really do much from an EEA country however :/
I love that you seem to believe in the "good faith" of huge corporations and bad bad government (that people choose not to engage with). That you skip over how this will effect creator/artists outside the EU who won't have these courts but still be subject to them. Would the "Artist"/US Movie Studio be able to file in any EU country they operate in against someone outside the EU because it was viewed there? That the reason the entire Copyright bill is a mess it was both written favor of opposing interest to try to give both Disney (the worst thing that ever happened to Copyright Law) and Google want they want and the protection they needed from this respectively. That no automatic system can no or tell if you actually legally purchased licences for what copyrighted material your using and the losses of income that would bring. To act naive that the original vagueness wouldn't be implemented with business strategy in mind is sad.
Example: Disney is starting their streaming service, they will ignore CZcams's it's copyright lapses. "They are trying the best they can". In return, Disney will get preferred ads, links and key words over other streaming services like Netflix and Hulu.
You had great points about the EU that should have been it's own video but that wasn't what this video was supposed to be about.
Why the Senate Map from the 2018 election? that was weird because most of the big wins were in the House and Governors. The Dems lost more seats in the Senate. I guess style of substance.
oh yeah yeah
I already regularly email my local mp and mep I'm sure they hate me I, sometimes spend an entire day emailing mps in the UK
saying what
@@thoticcusprime9309 for Mps it's usually explaining how I want them to vote on up coming votes like the no confidence vote and Brexit deal but I also email my local council to complain about new traffic lights causing long traffic delays (the light have since been removed) I have list of all the people in the council who should be emailed about different issues because if you don't let them know there I a problem they can't know things need to be fixed
Eloquently said. Hopefully this video reaches a large number of people
I really enjoyed this video. I like this more politically-themed content, and it would be interesting to see more of these types of videos along with the CZcams/media related content. Keep up the good work!
oh yeah yeah

In regards to 12:46. There is a requirement to consult your planned legislature with a number of experts/associations, etc. The problem is most of the time very little consideration is taken to what the consulted had to say. An association I'm part of was on multiple occasions contacted to consult various legislatures and 9/10 times all of our concerns and proposed changes were ignored outright (and those 1/10 usually were non-critical part too). All it does is fill that "consulted" check point in the papers.
The end was very inspiring.
Let there be memes
We're all going to hell.
Thank you! So much.
Very well constructed and executed, as per usual
These videos are great. #Article13 & #SaveYourInternet
You wouldn't steal a car.
You wouldn't steal a baby.
You wouldn't shoot a policeman.
You wouldn't go to the bathroom in the policeman's helmet,
and then send it to his grieving widow,
and then steal it again.
Piracy is stealing. If there's even a smidge of a chance pirated content could be uploaded on your website, you will face the consequences.
You wouldn't download a car.
Umg's wet dream.
Great vid like always.
Can't think of anyone better to tackle this subject than you.
Article 13 sucks
I live in Sweden and I personally think that EU has done a lot of good for Europe and we certainly have a lot of benefits for being in EU (getting resources in the time of need, ability to work in any country that is a member in the EU without problems, we can travel freely and easily through EU countries, calling and messaging coast just as much as in other EU countries and ETC), but I am damn willing to criticize it when it fucks up, because I want EU to keep to their original goal for Europa: A peaceful, unified continent that help each other in the time of need.
But right now, it's very undemocratic and it feels pointless to vote for a represent for the EU committee when in the end the ones who do decide aren't even elected by the people of Europe.
Honestly, I feel like as the year has passed, EU has become a person who needs control or it throws a temper tantrum.
Single government nations like the EU are fascistic in nature, it requires every one of its nation states that makes up the collective to swear fealty, while allowing it "personal sovereignty" insofar as their individual laws don't impede on the federal mandates of the "one, true government" under threat of economic/military retaliation.
The original goal of the European Union wasn't peace, it was complete and total rule with no regard to the individual, only the collective.
If you vote, but your vote has no representation - do you live in a democracy? If you protest, but your words go unheard, is that freedom? If you have free reign of travel, but that privelege can be withdrawn at any time for any reason, is it really free travel?
Blurredborderlines *puts on a tinfoil hat* go on...
