      Brando Williams the thing is Jordan and Kobe had too much pride, they wanted to shoot the ball and that was never going to change no matter how old they were. As LeBron's points start to diminish his assists will go up, something Jordan and Kobe should've done.

      Has nothing to do with size. It has do with style of play. And Lebron doesn't have to face night in a night out physical play. And by the way, the playoffs had another level of physicality. So not only does Lebron play in a weak conference in today's weak NBA, he's protected even more in the playoffs!

    whitlock knows that the defenses of the past 10 years are by every metric beter than in the 80s and 90s right??? At that time you couldn't double team a player on isolation while shielding the pass because that would be illegal defense and a tech, so players like MJ and Nique routinely got to play one on one without the defense being allowed to rotate and cut off spaces. The primary reason for the rise of the 3 point shot is the greatness of the zone and team defenses of the 2000s, the zones who cut off the spaces and angles and made it a lot harder to play isolations with a traditional big. It took the league an entire decade to finally adjust with a system of spacing, shooting and versatility to counter that, that's why in the past 3 years offenses have been so much better than they were between 2000 and 2012. Now it's up to the defenses to find a way to adjust, because today if you try to cut spaces on an iso, there's shooters from the other 4 positions, even at the 5 and that makes it very very hard to guard. Defenses are by no metric worse, if you analyse then with objectivity they are more advanced and better than 20 years ago, it's just that so are the offenses; it's the natural evolution of the game and it shouldn't be criticized. MJ is the goat and lebron has a slim chance of surpassing him, I'm cheering for lbj but I really believe he's gonna finish number 2 all time, but he does have a chance to become the goat, it's just that I think it's unlikely, but not completely impossible

    • @anthonycelestin3559
      @anthonycelestin3559 Před 7 lety +1

      Luckmag 2016: That's exactly what people don't understand. Just because the defense was more physical, doesn't mean the defense was better. Back then if a player was physical towards you, the worst that can happen to you is that you miss the shot or you take some physical punishment on your body. Now with teams being allowed to double or triple team you as soon as you have the ball in your hand, instead of just doubling you when you penetrate in the paint, it makes it harder for a player to score. When there are multiple defenders guarding a player trying to score, this causes turnover to occur more often: whether its losing the ball out of bounds or getting the ball stolen or blocked. Defenses are way more sophisticated now than back then. Back then teams used to pack the paint, shoot the midrange, and occasionally shoot a three, its not the same anymore. Now teams shoot a lot of threes to create spacing and a way to not turn the ball over, also teams play uptempo and they play a more full-court game instead of a half-court game. When a team shoots a midrange or a shot close to the basket, there is less uptempo movement based on a player not having room to operate when they get the rebound, this is based on the paint being crowded and big man who are most likely getting the board that are limited wit dribbling the ball down the court. Because there are so many three pointers shot, when teams miss there are long rebounds and this causes teams to push the floor more based on the degree of the ball tilting towards the opposite side of the court based on the power of which the ball is shot. Most of the time guards and small forwards are getting these long rebounds and they have freedom to push the tempo. This type of tempo requires a lot of cardio and endurance, and this makes scoring the ball harder to do. I know the 80s Lakers played uptempo, but you only see Magic Johnson pushing the tempo. Now, there are more versatile players and even big man that can handle the ball and push the tempo, which makes it even harder for defenses to handle.

    • @Dregsandguan
      @Dregsandguan Před 7 lety +11

      I don't know if he'd go to the line 15 times a night "no doubt" since well, 6 OF THE LEAST 6 YEARS (yes all of them) have been the absolute LEAST amount of trips to the line across the league in NBA HISTORY. Jordan's closest year to which foul's actually weren't called? Oh, 18th. Yeah, in Lebron's era... FTA's have been down league wide compared to the whistles blown in Jordan's era.. but that's not the picture we want painted is it? That doesn't, fit the narrative, does it?

  • @jaykelz1528
    @jaykelz1528 Před 7 lety +94

    I honestly don't believe different eras should hold as much weight.. whether which ones more physical or not? The objective is to make the ball go into the hoop. If LeBron was in MJ's era, he'd been raised with the tenacity and AND attitude MJ would have because that's how the game is played back then in order to be successful. If MJ was born in our era now? Who knows, he still could of been different and not as an Alpha since everyone believes it's "easier" now. So who knows but LeBron and MJ comparison is becoming more real

      Jay Kelz I don't want to sound disrespectful to Lebron because he is an all time great. No one in the league today even comes close.
      That being said, Lebron called Magic Johnson, Jordan and a few others after the 2011 finals to ask how you win a championship. That's just not something that was done in the 80s and 90s. You have to look at eras because certain stats and inflated in certain eras. If we're not looking at eras, Wilt Chamberlain is the GOAT. Nobody can touch his stats and he has 2 rings.

      VeliThaDon VeliThaDon You could be right brotha, but at the same time, the media is 500x different than before. How do we know if, let's say Isaiah Thomas didn't ask another player how to overcome beating the bulls and so on? Less tactics of media equals less opportunity to impose on what happened and with who back then.. I'm not refuting your thought process my dude because you very well may be absolutely right? But we all don't know. There was more granted privacy then. And hey, we all know Wilt is majorly underserviced as an all time great or referred to the greatest player of all time. But all generations have their biases I guess

  • @fundy023

    Lebron beating some of Michael's numbers has nothing to do with talent. It has to do with Lebron coming into the league as a teenager whereas Michael went to college for three years. And retired twice. If he hadn't retired the first time and you gave him 30ppg, his career regular season average plus playoffs where he averaged 32 ppg, you have to give him close to 5000 more points.

      Jamal Wallace again you fail to acknowledge LeBrons supreme size and strength. When you have the superior athletic advantage, it DOESN'T MATTER who is fouling you. Imagine a twelfth grader going up against freshman and softmores, that is the advantage Jordan had during his time, when the 6-6 athletic two guard was still an anomaly. Jordan rarely had to play against his physical equal. He was guarded by the likes of Danny ainge, Hersey Hawkins, and Jeff hornacek. Now if LeBron was to play in that same era it would be even more embarrassing because LeBron is even more physically gifted that Jordan.

I know Jordan stands as that last redeeming image of superiority over today's nba by the nba of yesteryear but it is not reality. If you need proof take a look at Lebron opposition who has ever shot the ball like the Curry/Draymond/Klay of the Warriors '15-'16? Don't worry I will wait for your answer... that's right no one. Now add Durant, the 2nd best player on the planet to that monster and tell me one ring over that super team isn't worth 2 or maybe 3 rings that Jordan got.

    • @Luckymag-if4dw
      @Luckymag-if4dw Před 7 lety +2

      it's different, winning 50 games in the 90s was a bit easier tha it is today on average, due to the expansion teams being added to the league. Just think, as great as the mid 90s seattle supersonics were, you really think they were better than OKC with KD, westbrook, ibaka and harden? Coz that OKC core averaged 56 wins per season for 5 years and only won 60 games once. the sonics averaged 60 wins per season for 6 years and won 60+ 3 times, does that make then a better team. What's the difference between beating a 48 win team and a 52 win team, seriously? the 55 win okc just beat the 67 win spurs and should have beaten the 73 win warrios, teams with 12 and 18 more wins than then, what does that prove to you huh? THAT'S A VERY IGNORANT ARGUMENT

    • @davidmackenzie9899
      @davidmackenzie9899 Před 7 lety

      Luckymag 2016 there has been more 50 win seasons during 13 years James' career (102), than there was in the 13 years of Michael's (100) even with one lock out year where teams only played 66 games. My point is not ignorant because I'm not ignoring any stats. with expansion it actually makes easier for teams to win more games because the talent is spread thinner. My point was also that Jordan did play against great teams.

    how they gonna laugh when he said it was a powderpuff league now? The fouls called in the Jordan Era would be flagrant 1s now. the common fouls now wouldn't barely be called back then. • @JavierB0616
      @JavierB0616 Před 7 lety +7

      "It's much easier for players to score":-
      -nope less ISOs, more zone defense, better awareness of shooter on the floor.
      -LBJ and Jordan might get the same superstar treatment.
      -the fouls are less aggressive because the League wanna protect the players specially theirs stars.
      -After the downfall of Detroit and Boston in the early 90s(coincidence with the rise of the bulls) it was clear they would advance to the finals every season.

    • @titusisking
      @titusisking Před 7 lety +14

      Garrett Luttman 1. You can't fault Lebron for playin in the era he's playing in, it's just not fair. Zone defenses have developed so much that the argument it's easier to score is blasphemy, especially since a three point shot is more difficult than a layup or a dunk. The league has transformed into a shooting league and Lebrons game is geared towards the paint so how is it easy to score. Lebron is just that great, not good but GREAT.

      Garrett Luttman True. but in that era it was much easier for players to defend. LeBron(prime) is arguably the most fierce combination of strength and speed the league has ever seen. Imagine a league where on defense someone like him is allowed to hand-check and foul hard with little consequences. It kinda works both ways.

    • @itzmeh6017
      @itzmeh6017 Před 7 lety

      Invincible Shaolin
      But in todays game it doesn't go both ways. Lebron wouldn't be able to bully the league. Plus he wouldn't be able to just power in the paint and score. That is his main game. He has nothing special if everyone around him is just as big and physical. Arguably yes, but isn't, and he isnt a better passer than Jordan. He would be a Shawn Kemp that can pass IMO.

The Cavaliers are maybe the most complete team in the NBA in terms of balancing athleticism with size and offensive firepower with team defense. They are a great team in and of themselves, just like the Bulls were in the '90s.

    To be honest here Lebron's career will for ever be tarnished for the simple reason that when his Cavs couldn't win what does he do turn his back on his city and leaves to Miami where they already had a superstar named Dwyane wade plus they recruited Chris Bosh. Then he finally says OK I'll go back to Cavs and assemble the best team so he could win. Fan or no fan of Jordan you have to admit that at least he stuck with his team until he won championships. Jordan played against tougher defense than you have now. If you don't believe me go look up pistons vs bulls and see how they beat him up bad when he tried going baseline. Jordan had to overcome a lot more to get where he got. Again,it's all in the videos if anyone disagrees. Also the guy is part of a team that 3peat twice. Remember after the first one he left came back after leaving for about a year or so and not long after he returns they win 3 more. So it doesn't matter what LeBron accomplishes now cause he will only be second best to Jordan but not top him. Also,Jordans name is still as relevant as Lebron's and he hasn't played in over two decades. so who's the man.

Aguirre was 31. vinny Johnson was "old" at 34 but actually led the team in scoring that series at 21ppg on 59% shooting. The team was number 1 in defense that year too and just came off 3 straight final appearance's winning back to back but since they lost to the bulls then they are old huh...The pistons LeBron beat had 3 of the 5 starts over 30 and their 6th man mcdyess at 32. Keep in mind that ben Wallace was no longer on the team either......That brings up another point if you think 30 is old then that means you must be extremely impressed with MJ considering at age 35 he won the scoring title, regular season MVP and finals MVP but you will find a way to down play that too huh.

    the first time Jordan plays with an ALLSTAR he wins a 3 peat..... He went through the tough knicks with Ewing and Oakley, He went throught the Heat with penny and Mourning, he went through the lakers with Magic, he went through the detroit pistons who still had 3 of their TOP players in Rodman, Isiah and Joe (could add in bill), he went through the Seattle Super Sonics who had a big three (payton, Hawkins, Kemp) and had one of the best records at the time, He went through the pacers big 3 og Reggie, Jackson, and SMiths who was no scrub or the davis brothers who were beasts, he went through the suns who had a strong duo with Ainge and Barkley, he beat the Magic with a 3-4 superstar roster with Penny Hardaway, Dennis Scott, and Shaq and anderson who were expected to beat them, he had to go past the Jazz with Stockton, Malone, Hornecek....
    Jordan faced big 3 teams and if his father wouldnt have been killed wed be talking about his 8 rings cause all the media had to do was question his ability and the fire would of been re lit
    Lebron faced on his own, The celtics big three who were aging much like magics lakers were
    he faced the pistons who aged as well much like jordan faced an aging pistons
    he lost to a tough spurs team (dont hold him against that)
    but later in his career he faced, the bulls with 2 allstars in Rose and Deng, later 2 again with Butler and Rose
    a pacer team that had scola west and george
    and im really struggling to find another team he had to go through in the eastern conference
    while in the finals he met the uderdog mavs, who beat him
    he faced the spurs a few times won and lost a few
    a OKC team that were inexperienced at their age
    the warriors who in my opinion are over hyped yet nonetheless are a good team and i dont hold that loss against him cause of injuries
    then he beats them finally
    oh and Lebron need 2 other allstars to get him rings
    Jordan only needed 1

  • @Luckymag-if4dw
    @Luckymag-if4dw Před 7 lety +37

    Listen, let's be clear about something, for me MJ still is the goat, but let me tell something. A while ago I watched a special hosted by Ahmad Rashad in which he asked Bill Russell and Wilt Chamberlain how they would fare in the ’90s. To no surprise, they said they’d dominate. They claimed that that era was much easier than theirs. Russell even said that his Celtics teams were the greatest of all-time; much better than Jordan’s Bulls. A previous generation arguing their clearly inferior game was better than the present generation at the time. Sound familiar right? I hate it to break it to all of you that romanticize 1990’s basketball, but the game is a bit better now. It’s common sense that athletes are better in today’s world. In sports like track and field and swimming, it’s much more easily quantifiable. In basketball, it isn’t. But the same principles apply. In a vacuum, today’s athletes are faster, stronger, and smarter. This is how the world works. You learn from the previous generation and build on it. The quality of basketball being played today is much higher. Kids play all year long, honing their skills and adding to the game. Players, on average, are much more skilled. Jordan and Scottie Pippen and others were fantastic players, but they also benefitted from playing in a worse era. One that thrived on isolation play, simplistic defensive schemes, and inefficient shots. Overall the quality of team basketball today is more advanced and better than it ever was (that doesn't mean the players individually are more or less talented, it means the systems are better)

    • @Thundergodxix
      @Thundergodxix Před 7 lety +4

      The average basketball player is more athletic now, but not by a large amount. How come no one has broken the world long jump, triple jump, and high jump in 20+ years then? I can agree about players being stronger now, but that's pretty relative. Players back then would be as strong as they are now with today's training methods.

    • @dusttaker
      @dusttaker Před 7 lety

      To simplify, its the evolution of the game. Todays players build and learn from the previous and thus are better.

    • @makehumanitygreatagain8128
      @makehumanitygreatagain8128 Před 7 lety

      Really it is two things. The first thing is a character issue and the second is how far in advance of one's era is the player without having any unfair natural advantages like height. I totally agree with you that today's game is a better game. That's only natural as we become more knowledgeable.
      Michael Jordan is a better player than LeBron in every way conceivable. For starters, he was lightyears ahead of his competition - LeBron is not. Michael Jordan revolutionized the way the game was played - LeBron did not. Michael Jordan was a far better competitor than LeBron and had a far better zeal for competition than LeBron. In terms of pure basketball skill, Michael Jordan was also a far superior player - better footwork, far better ball handling and far better beauty. LeBron's game at this point is practically all in the weightroom. It's clumsy and bullyish. Yes, I accept that Lebron is very athletic, but that's it. His dominance comes from his physical presence - not from his skill.
      There's no comparison. Michael Jordan was an artist out there who also doubled as an assassin in shorts. What LeBron does Michael Jordan can do. What Michael Jordan did, LeBron can't do even with all of the medical and nutritional advances in the game. #freekanye

Period!!!!!! ask Karla Malone, Magic Johnson, Charles Barkley, David Robinson, Larry Bird, Allen Iverson, Patrick Ewing, Shaq O'Neil, my man Kobe. bruh, I can continue with this list 4ever. after MJ took 2 year of absence from winning 3 championship in a row. (straight ) MJ knew there wasn't any competition. And then, when he came back from his mini retirement. MJ won another 3 Straight championships more. REMEMBER, mj never , never never, never left his team. Unlike, cry baby LBJ. MJ build he team from ground up. MJ has more rings, and achievements than LBJ. Jordan took a break in his prime and still achieved more than LeBron who never took break. Jordan was drafted into a conference with an all time great Celtics squad with Bird and the Bad Boy Pistons who he had to face. In 2007 which team in the east was on that level of competition? After 13 prime seasons Jordan won the most scoring titles, the most Finals MVPs, the most defensive first team selections, 5 MVPs, DPOY, 3 time steals leader, became the only player to record over 200 steals and over 100 blocked shots for more than one season and became the NBA playoffs all time leading scorer despite playing less games than Kareem, Kobe and LeBron. Plus after he retired after his 13th season he was #3 on the all time scoring list. When you stack up LeBron's 13 seasons next to Jordan's it speaks for itself. Plus LeBron's in his 14th season still chasing Jordan. Don't get me wrong LeBron's a great player but trying to put him over Jordan is just crazy.
