This helped a lot thank you! I only replaced the cables, so had to take the assembly apart. However when I reinstalled everything, the window would go down, but wouldn't go far up and would jam. I took it all apart about 4 or 5 times thinking the cable was installed incorrectly somewhere, only to discover that the runner wheel (or whatever it's called) attached to the window was very stiff and not turning. Not sure why it decided to act up all of a sudden (or perhaps that was what caused the rusted cable to snap in the first place!) but after a good greasing, it was all running well. Could have saved myself a few hours if I'd checked that beforehand. Just thought I'd mention this in case anyone else has the same issue.

Glad you found it useful, if you do another you should make a video of just changing the cables, I've never been confident enough to try doing as I believe it's quite fiddly!

@@MikeJenicCycling Your advice about buying the complete unit is sound advice, especially since should the window motor fail later on, then it all would all have to come apart again. I actually bought the cables before watching your video not realising quite what was involved. However, if you ever need to take the assembly apart, it's actually not too difficult.
Once the entire assembly is out, to change the cables first remove the bottom white plastic cable guide (opposite end to the pulley on the frame), it will snap out using pliers to bend the plastic locks, this will give the needed cable slack. Remove the cable ends from the centre regulator. Remove the two screws from the drum assembly, and then using a flat head screwdriver pop the cable drum out. It should slide out easily. The cables will be loose, remove the cables and replace them with the new ones, with the new guides, spring and plastic caps, etc.
When putting it back together, the cable(s) can only get wound around the drum in the correct way, it's impossible to fit them in reverse, etc due to the clever design. Each cable gets wound round 2.5 times, then carefully holding the cables on the drum (as they will try to uncoil), put it back inside the drum enclosure, once inserted back inside the cables can't come loose due to the tight geometry of the drum enclosure, even without tension on the cables.
Then attach the two new cable ends to the centre sliding regulator. Then slide the bottom cable back onto the cable guide (rather self explanatory how it all fits) and simply pull the white plastic cable guide tight with some force until it goes back into it's mount at the end of the frame, snap and lock into place. Add grease to the cable drum, screw the lid back on with the two screws. Job done!

Normally, watching a window go up and down is not that interesting or suspenseful. But after watching all the thought and work you put into this, it *was* interesting, and their *was* a bit of anticipation and suspense before you tested it and even a bit of shared satisfaction when you were successful. No, I didn't catch every minute of it, but you can bet I will if the regulator in my '97 gets any worse. Great tutorial. Thanks for posting.

    Nice video.
Sorry for not catching the obvious, but what make you decide to change the motor instead of the wires like is more common?

Stian Fagereng it is quite difficult to change the wires alone, the complete units are not too expensive and saves a lot of time!

Hint, if you lock the door with it open, you can get the handle surround screw dead on ;)
