I'm currently doing this with my budgie. It is tricky and takes some practice. I like your instruction about where to hold them - to avoid gripping the chest. My vet showed me how to use the light on my phone in a darkened room to capture him as they can't see well in the dark. This is the most stress free way I've found. And yes using a towel and being very careful with placement of the dropper in the beak.
And lots of praise during and after!
