We only ever had them in a packet of food which was contained thankfully!

…Lady D, you are the best bird owner/keeper on CZcams. Therefore, if moths can accidentally hatch in your seed, then it can happen to anyone who keeps birds. Thank you for showing us all the effort it takes to get rid of them. 😁 👱🏻‍♀️ 🌷 🐩

I used to have these, but over time, I've been able to get rid of them. My bird feed is in the freezer. 🤷‍♀️ They're a pain.

Those moths get into all the pet foods. Dog treats too. I have been keeping the bird's food in the freezer for about 15 yrs or more. So glad you learned the freezer trick, but I keep plastic snap-on or twist close containers in the icebox & just just keep refilling them😊

I would never use anything which smells in a room where birds are, regardless what manufacturers said. Better safe than sorry. But you know it better and did the right thing by temporary moving your birds out.

Ah yes those moths, i remember using the piezoelectric part of a lighter to shock those larvae of them.
By observations they shows a cringed reaction. XD

Oh man, this just brought up a bad memory! We got these a long time ago, not from birdseed (although that did happen too, that wasn't nearly as bad as the story I'm about to tell!), but from tulip bulbs. You see, my mom had gotten this little mesh bag with two tulip bulbs inside, and she planned on planting them at some point, but didn't feel like doing it right away. She put them in one of the coffee table drawers...and promptly forgot about them. Without telling anybody they even existed, so no one knew about them but her. Turns out, there were moth eggs on or in the bulbs, and a couple months later we were wondering where all these moths and larvae were coming from. I kept telling them (as a kid who no one listened to) that they were coming from the coffee table, but was told, "No, I'm sure they aren't, there's nothing in there for them to eat."
For another month we would kill them when we found them. It got out of hand, and eventually my mom said, "I bet they're coming from the coffee table."
    Ya don't say, Mom? 9_9
They emptied it out and found the bulbs, which were reduced to sludge and swarming with worms. Then they deep cleaned the coffee table and everything in it that could be saved, and the moth infestation eventually went away.
This story has two morals. One, listen to your kids once in a while, they might actually have something useful to say. And two, plant bulbs right away when you get them if you're forgetful.

I too put my seed in freezer for a couple days before bringing in the house.I opened up a bag of oats sprouts oats sprays, and there was a whole bunch of bugs and iyiur video just reminded me they’re still in the freezer not sure what it’s gonna do to them if they’re usable, but I wasn’t taking a chance of keeping them in the house, love your videos

I was wary and that's why I put my birds outside, however its labeled as safe for birds. The room smelled like herbs for a week and my birds are doing great! I am paranoid about paint though

I'm trying to keep most of the birds'food (including dry) in the refrigerator, freezer when possible. It's easier with just 3 birds, though.

Great video; very informative. Not sure that I've ever had moths. A while back I remember seeing some in the bag of parakeet seeds; threw it out in the yard for the wild birds. Great advice on storing seeds in the freezer.

Donna, so glad you did this video, very great job on the life of these horrid MOTHS. I just had the 2nd infestation. I KEEP ALL THEIR FOOD & TREATS IN THE FREEZER. I KEEP READY FEED FOOD IN THE ICE BOX in plastic snap-on containers.1 new bag of treats were infested it wasn't sealed well, it was in my pantry tossed in zip bag put in outside garbage. I want to do that bomb for the den & kitchen, you just did the 1 room did it leave a grease residue or powder? I have TV & other electronics & of course the kitchen, so I can't do anymore extra cleaning, I just broke 2 ribs. I am assume that bomb doesn't kill roaches, we would need an ATOMIC BOMB. WHERE DID YOU GET THE TRAPS & BOMB, I am going to do as soon as I am capable to clean. Thanks Donna, great video will help many people.🎉🎉🎉🎉❤❤❤❤❤😊😊😊

Yes, I got them from seeds and my husband was so mad! We had to throw everything out in our dry goods. I got the maxguard traps. I tried freezing the seeds for 7 days, that did not work. I threw it out and bought Abba seed and have not had them since. I washed all my cupboards with the vinegar and dish soap too. It was not a fun time.

We had an outbrake of these things years ago. They were EVERYWHERE! Had no idea where they were coming from for a while. Until one day I decided I needed to get in to a cupboard in the computer room . Immediately when opening, I was greeted with a smell and a flock of moths exploding out. There in the cupboard was a old bag of nuts someone forgot and it was moldy and infested with the moths and larvae so finally found the source. With that gone, the moths died out

    • @Loveofpets

I left it on and it was in the hallway and didn't go off. The alarm would go off if the smoke reached that area. I seen smoke in the bathroom in the hallway but it dissipated there.

Which species are you comfortable letting loose together in the same room?

    • @Loveofpets
      @Loveofpets  Před 14 dny +1

All my small birds come out together. I have Budgies, Cockatiels, Bourkes, Turquoisines, Canaries, a Kakariki , a Lovebird , a Java Sparrow and a Sierra Parakeet.
I wouldn't recommend a Lovebird as they can be aggressive to other birds, especially the females. I got lucky with my sweet male.
