As a Turkish person I think this is one of the cultural differences we have with the west. In Turkiye, if you try to speak Turkish no matter how poor your Turkish is, people will find it sympathetic and will try to help you. But for instance in France, if your french is poor, people dont like to hear it and they are like they want you to stop trying and continue in english.

I worked a lot with Turks. They were always so friendly and vibrant with me. Real dad energy. Never had that growing up but very fond of Turkish people because of it, twenty years later. Lol

All cultures have pro's and con's. That same warm and outgoing attitude can also be very exhausting when you just wanna mind your own business and go about your day. It's like you're expected to engage with every single person you pass on the street. On those days, i would rather be in a country like sweden, or germany, where everyone is in their own little bubble XD

As Turks, we would like to say the same thing about U.S. but your government is run by the Jewish and Armenian lobby. Not only don't give us the F-35s, but also impose sanctions. Fortunately, we owe you a lot as Turkey. If it were not for your sanctions, we would never have been able to fly our 5th generation fighter jet KAAN, which successfully completed its test flight last month. Thank you for the motivation.

@@jujutrini8412 the best two explanations are boring enough. French arrives to nearly all languages where global diplomacy has been focused upon over the last dozen centuries. Also, French is an incredibly common second language in just about all of Europe.
As children in the 1980's my mum would not let us utter a single word of english in our turkish household. We used to envy how our cousins and our friends could freely speak English at home to their parents. Decades later they are unable to string two words of turkish together because they never learned and now they envy my mum for not allowing us speak english at home. Mum knew that we would learn at school and the importance of knowing your mother tongue.
Blame that on CHP, thanks to Recep Tayyip Erdogan the Kurds can speak there language as well

Wow, dude. I'm from Serbia. I knew that Serbian language has a lot of Turkish loanwords, since Serbia was once a part of the Ottoman Empire, but hearing Turkish people speak made me realize just how many of them we have.

Most of eastern Europe is more culturally similar to turkey than they are westerners. Where I live, I see lots of eastern Europeans shopping in Turkish stores. This is in England lol

you can learn basic Turkish in a month by listening 1 lesson from my first list. each lesson is 30 minutes.
Brazilian here, Turkish coffee is amazing (tried in Australia in Turkish places), every time I got to turkish shops, I always get the coffee and baklava with pistachio.
My Turkish friend taught me only to have Turkish coffee in the morning served with a glass of water. She then tipped the cup and when cool, she read my fal (fortune) from the grains. Turks also eat the grains to cure an upset tummy

It is difficult but doable. Don't rush. Practice with simple words every day. As long as people understand you pay no attention to perfect grammar. Seeing smiling faces is always encouraging.

When you delve deeply into Turkish history, it is insane how many iconic figures and historical events happened in that area. Fascinating country. Roasted Chestnuts are an autumn/winter dish here in the UK, or it was until people stopped learning how to do it. I have a few spots where I get thousands and store them for the kids.

The Chestnut is one of the few universal foods. DNA evidence suggests they possibly originated somewhere in Asia (we don't really know where precisely) about 56 million years ago, and have spread to pretty much every continent except for Oceania long before humans. So pretty much people have been roasting and eating chestnuts way before we have archaeological records for. There are small variations between American, European, and Chinese varieties, but they mostly all taste very similar. Plus you can get them in most grocery stores (both raw in shell, and precooked in cans & snack pouches)
the chestnuts in Turkiye are known as Italian chestnuts in the U.S. Kind of smaller in size and tastier compared to the Asian / Chinese ones, which are bigger and has literally a bland taste.

A turk in Germany here! I speak both turkish and german equally. Outside it's german, inside it's german and turkish but mostly turkish. Because of this I can speak turkish like a native speaker without an accent. Greatful for my parents bec of this. And since I was born and grew up in Germany, I also speak german like a native.
