I Learned Portuguese 100% from AI Teacher, Brazilians Stunned

I recently became the first person ever, as far as I can tell, to learn to speak a language from scratch solely by practicing with AI, and then I went and tested myself with total strangers to see how much I actually learned. The backstory here is that my team and I have developed an artificial intelligence language teacher capable of teaching you a language just like a human would through real bilingual speech to speech conversation practice, which any serious language learner will tell you is far and away the single most effective way to learn. It’s called Teacher AI, and I decided to test it out to see if it could actually teach me enough of a language for me to be able to conduct my daily activities like getting coffee and ordering pizza all in my target language with native human speakers. I picked Portuguese as my target language for a bit of a challenge because I have never studied it before, and for this challenge I did not study from any sources other than Teacher AI - no textbooks, no grammar resources, no courses, & no human teachers. So I essentially needed to learn 100% of everything I needed to know exclusively from AI.

I love how the lady at the second restaurant took the time to tell him she's going to speak more slowly so he can absorb what she's saying. When learning a language it helps so much to hear slow and concise pronunciation. Props to her !
The funny thing is his pronunciation wasn't wrong per se at that moment because he sounded "Nordestino".

@@sledgehog1 não tem nada a ver com sotaque nordestino, mas, de fato, algumas tentativas de pronunciar o português usando de inconsciente o espanhol quebrado faz uns sons que desviam do sotaque hegemônico e com uma marcação mais forte pode parecer umas variações nortistas. de modo geral nada que o xiao falou soou natural ao ponto de parecer "nordestino". primeiro, porque condensar as variações da segunda região mais populosa do país, com históricos de ocupação, mestiçagem, culturalidades diferentes em uma só é brutalmente simplista, segundo porque, de fato, não tem característica dos sotaques nortistas.

@@dennerguilhon it's not exactly the same, but as someone who is currently in Rio and taking Portuguese classes and already knew very basic Spanish, it's probably the biggest head start you could possibly have. And he said he chose it for the "challenge" Even in his video he uses words that are almost identical. At my language schools (I'm currently attending two) the professors won't put a Spanish speaker in the same beginner class as a non Spanish speaker because the Spanish speaker will already understand so much. If you're from either country you're kidding yourself if you want to try denying it.

Eu aprendi português morando no Brasil. Hoje ninguém sequer suspeita que sou russo. Apesar disso, acredito que além da abordagem comunicativa, o estudo tradicional de idiomas estudando gramática é essencial para dominar o idioma e falar corretamente. Muito obrigado aos meus professores BR por me ensinarem isso na escola!
The Russian and Brazilian Portuguese phonemes are quite similar, so it's easy to pronounce. But Russian and Portuguese grammars are HARD :)

Ele falar chinês perfeito, cantonês, e mais uma porrada de lingua ajuda muito na hora de entender e replicar fonemas e a tonalidade da língua

Nah, this is like testing the games. They always test it on most powerful rigs so everything is smooth and great, but on average pc it's lagging and stuttering. Xiaoma is that extremely powerful pc in this metaphor lol

@@littlebitofhope1489 are you aware that there is no country in this world that has enough teachers? They are almost as scarce as doctors... And mind that most of those teachers are really bad at their job... As a teacher, you can find job almost instantly, and you don't even have to be good... The ratio between teachers and students in primary and secondary education levels is 1:25 (1 teacher per 25 students on average) and now we live in time where it's possible to make it 1:1. How is that a bad thing? Everyone in this world should be able to get all the education they want and AI can make that reality

Quanto a você estar há 8 anos, tentando, veja a técnica dele, praticamente o dia todo. E fazendo o máximo para praticar com outras pessoas (ou a AI).
Não se compare com outras pessoas. Compare a si mesmo. Semana passada, como vc estava? E no mês passado? E assim você vai aprendendo.
O que faz alguém avançar no aprendizado em uma língua é a comunicação com outras pessoas. Não adianta nada ficar só lendo e pronunciando palavras sozinho

Essa segunda opção é inimaginável para mim.

Às vezes a tradução direita ajuda e pensar em como se diz: "eu quero comprar uma salada de fruta" ou "se eu soubesse que estava chovendo eu teria pegado um guarda-chuva" na língua alvo e repetir ao infinito

Já vi alguns professores analisando o "aprendizado" dele... Realmente ele fala muitos idiomas, mas esses que ele diz aprender em poucos dias são somente partes decoradas e não pleno entendimento da lingua, adoro conteúdo dele, mas concordo com essas afirmações.

Once you have learned a few languages the rest come easier. Concepts like conjugation, tenses, gender, word order, subject verb agreement... don't need to be taught to you anymore you can just pick up that they are happening and focus on the few more unique aspects of the language that will stick out more. Also the fact Spanish is probably his 3rd best language (after english and chinese) would have helped him A LOT with this as they are mutually intelligible and share 80-90% of vocab and grammar.

I am Brazilian, and fluent in English. I can tell you have some way to go, but it does not matter. The only thing that matters is you being able to communicate, and also people enjoy and appreciate that you take effort for our language. Well done dude!
I’m sure that, with his motivation he’ll become fluent in no time. He just needs to get to know Portuguese some more, so that he can know what’s Portuguese and Spanish! Also, get some practice on some of the tricky sounds (ão, ei, lhe, etc) that we say all the time

Pra 11 dias o avanço é simplesmente absurdo. Tudo bem que o Xiaoma é bom em aprender linguas e sabe espanhol, mas mesmo assim, parabéns. O pouco que eu vi da IA nesse video eu achei fantastico. Pronuncia, correção, parecia uma brasileira falando mesmo.

Nice attempt! This is very impressive for so short a time! One thing that you will have to learn is the sing song kind of way a lot of brazilians speak (its almost like how a tenessee accent works in english), once you get that down it really makes your accent stick. (Coming from an american who grew up in brazil)
It takes a lot of courage to challenge yourself to do this.

I've been learning Brazilian Portuguese for just over a year now and went to Brazil (São Paulo, Uba Tuba, e Guararema) for two weeks in April, and you and I are pretty much at the same level in Portuguese 🤯 So fun to see you learn a language I'm also learning and be able to see just how comfortable you are in the language after less than 2 weeks! You really are doing incredible!

Na verdade ela deveria ser ou Colombiana ou Venezuelana pelo sotaque do inglês dela. Provavelmente ela entende o português mas não sabe falar, então ela fala em espanhol mesmo. Já vi muitos falantes de espanhol trabalhando em restaurantes brasileiros.

Acho que não deve ser tão difícil não. Uma bem mais difícil deve ser o Húngaro, que é tão difícil que pode ser que tenha tido um papel no QI médio de 101 na Hungria.

I had some Brazilian friends in middle school and when I heard them speaking with their parents or each other I always thought it sounded so pretty. Brazilian Portuguese has such a pretty flow to it, almost musical.
It is the most Vowel centric of all the romance languages. Many words end in a vowel.

I tried the site/ai to practice german - and it was nothing short of amazing!
Sou brasileiro e falo português, inglês, espanhol e estou finalizando o italiano. Os próximos idiomas serão francês e alemão. Eu demoro 1 ano estudando e vivendo, assistindo e lendo 1 hora por dia cada idioma, então eles acabam tornando-se naturais para mim. Parabéns pela escolha do novo idioma. Não sei se é apenas marketing ou se você levará a sério o aprendizado, mas espero que continue, porém em 11 dias não tem milagre, pois o cérebro tem limite de novas informações específicas e só absorve melhor enquanto descansado. Dedico 365 horas por ano a cada idioma e mais algumas muitas horas por ano consumindo mídia, e até mesmo trocando os idiomas dos meus dispositivos, como tv, smartphone, entre outras coisas. Tudo que você dedica tempo e periodicidade, você se torna mestre. Parabéns!

Eu gustaría de fazer isso também, sou nativo de espanhol, estou morando no Brasil além tenho nivel intermediário de inglês, mesmo assim gustaría morar num país de língua inglesa no ano próximo

@theloniousmagno sou venezuelano, tenho 6 meses morando no Brasil. Gustó muito do idioma e costumes de vocês más ainda tenho muito coisas para aprender de sua língua, preciso mais treino. Eu faço o seguinte pra o inglês, assisto 1h de vídeos, séries o filmes eu comecei com conteúdo de criança e depois aumentei o nível de dificuldade, depois faço estudo de palavras no app de Anki, e durante o dia tentou de ouvir música inglês. No total eu faço cerca de 2 hrs de inglés cada día, mesmo que eu sei que não e suficiente pra ter un nível avançado por enquanto e o melhor que posso fazer

It's like learning Mandarin (probably easier) or Cantonese, they have diferent tones..... Learning Portuguese from Portugal would have been more dificult I think.

Xaioma, congrats man! I moved to Brazil in 2015 and it took me about the same amount of time to get where you did in 11 days. I had the benefit of being immersed fully, so I was able to listen to many different people talking about many subjects.
If I could recommend something, it would be to try and copy the pronunciation of the AI bot. Their accents are on point. If you can get those phonemes on point, you'll start speaking a lot more smoothly.
I am truly impressed by your ability to leverage your passion for foreign languages and transform it into a successful business venture. Congratulations on this remarkable achievement.

He has a video where he actually had his brain scanned because many people have said this. It's called, "Scientists Scan My Brain to See If I’m a Genius". I think the key to Xiaoma's learning so quick is because most of his videos are centered around food and visiting food places so his learning is situational. He also has a website called, "Street-Smart Language course" where he details how he does this. Also helps that he has the confidence to speak even though he knows he is probably going to be saying some thing incorrectly.
