Os portugueses falam _telemóvel_ por influência do inglês britânico. Que chama de _mobile phone._ Nós, brasileiros, dizemos _celular_ por influência do inglês americano, que chama de _cell phone._ Nos *dois* casos, houve influência do inglês. E, como era de se esperar, o português americano foi mais influenciado pelo inglês americano e o português europeu sofreu maior influência do inglês europeu. Comportamento idêntico em ambos os casos.

As an American who learned Brazilian Portuguese (Brazilian wife), it can be very, very difficult to understand European Portuguese. The first word, "colesterol" sums up the differences perfectly. Brazilian Portuguese flows smoothly and is very pleasant to listen to. In Portugal, the words are condensed, chopped, monotone, and irritating.
Additionally, just like American English and British English, where we use different words for the same thing, Brazilian Portuguese and European Portuguese has the same issue, and can cause confusion for someone learning the language.

I can agree that for general people at the surface is what can be said, but at another level, for people learning languages and that knows both very well, Portuguese is much more elegant and there is no way you can miss any word or sound, I do not want to offend but I am putting more or less what time gave to the language, if u gave Portuguese to less educated People to carry on their life to day to day living and transminting it to their upbringings , you would flow it more, you would take out more the structure of it to go easy to the mundane objectives of life, a kind of thing that more educated people avoid to do, I do not know if you understand tottally what I am saying, its not for baching out your comment nor the Brazilian Portuguese, but is the reality, I dont know the linguistic kind of development from american english , from European English but I reckon more or less happened the same, America is full of pratical people, and the adveture of going to America was in terms of quatity of people more the less educated so it gone from that to what is now. From your personal point of view I undestand that you prefer Brazilian Portuguese because you had the first contact with it and it maches your patern of talking better, but from my personal point of view, I like some Brazilian music , I agree it eases the flow of sound, but for speaking there is not even a close match, European Portuguese is way more elegant, but you had to be very knoledge in it to really see the little souinds that compose a language to then see it. For example for me I prefer english Uk from the bbc speakers than any americans news presenter, its just english in a childish kind of way no special caracterist on it, to much simplistic way of talking ( I like America and Americans in general so its not on that way, its just a taste nothing more, I have a brother that lives in US washington DC and he is a teacher in a medicine college for future doctors, so I went there several times and know america and i like it for visiting, but for me not to live like my brother , different tastes thats it )
Eu, coitadinha norte-americana, aprendi português em Portugal. Depois, participei num programa de imersão aqui nos EUA com um professor brasileiro. Eu disse sarcasticamente "Estou cheia de pica para ir fazer o meu TPC" e o professor partiu-se a rir. Afinal "cheia de pica" não quer dizer "entusiasmada" no Brasil 🙃
Adoro qualquer dialecto de português. Português de Portugal é a minha "segunda casa" linguística, maaas os brasileiros não ouvem o meu sotaque gringo, só a minha pronúncia europeia, e acham que sou portuguesa 🥹

As a Brazilian Portuguese speaker who's lived abroad and acquired a fairly decent command of the English language, TO ME (a lot of emphasis on that), European Portuguese is to Brazilian Portuguese what British English is to American English. Basically meaning that: European languages (whether Portuguese or English in this particular case) sound more elegant/posh, whereas American English and BR-PT sound more dynamic and kind of modern. Again, it's my opinion, not stating a fact or anything, feel free to disagree.

I agree with almost everything you said, but I don't think about portuguese from Portugal as being elegant as English from UK is for English speakers.
In my personal opinion, portuguese from Portugal reminds me to arcaic, once they use to speak a lot of words which are at antique texts like the bible and other pretty old docs and books

I've been taking Portuguese on Duolingo for the past few weeks after noticing how much I could understand it written online (I took seven years of Spanish classes, for context) and the pronounciation is the thing I'm struggling with the most. I keep reading Portuguese words and pronouncing them with my U.S. Spanish accent and its just not correct, lol 😅

There language sound more like French then spanish. Only 2or3 spanish words out of the whole sentence. I don't understand nothing that they say at all. Portuguese is Portuguese language. I Understand chilli, Peru, Ecuador, Mexico, Panama, Nicaragua, columbia, Venezuela, Dominicans, Hondura,, Cuban , Spain , and my language Puerto Rico.
As a Spanish speaker (uruguayo), I don't think there's any language more beautiful than Brazilian Portuguese.

This was honestly really interesting! i've always heard that Portuguese from Portugal and Brazil are really different but hadn't heard many comparisons, but now I get it. I hope there's more videos coming with these two! They play off eachother so well. :)
It's the same language the only difference is the pronounce and a few words.

Ambos conseguem se entender SIM muitas vezes o problema é o sotaque porque gramaticalmente falando é o mesmo idioma ( claro que com algumas diferenças) o que acaba por ser normal, até em Portugal que é um país pequeno existem diferenças de sotaques e palavras imagine-se em outro país...

She wasn't making fun of the language, she was just surprised by the words and laugh because it is extremely diferent. You can see that she thought a lot of words were cute.
The Portuguese speaker was phenomenal and very eloquent. Please have her back! The Brazilian speaker, however, seemed kinda disrespectful towards her and had a bit of an attitude and some preconceived notions about European Portuguese.

Não achei a brasileira nada arrogante como alguns estão a dizer 😅, acho que o "estranhamento" dela com os nossos termos deixou o vídeo mais descontraído mesmo que algumas vezes pareça que ela está a forçar reações mas acho que dizer que ela é arrogante é exagerar. É totalmente normal ela estranhar mais o nosso português do que nós o dela, já que temos mais contacto com o português do brasil do que os brasileiros têm com o de portugal. I find amazing when spanish and french words sounds similar to my language but I never had the pleasure to find similarities with european portuguese.

European Portuguese sounds very elegant
Portuguese girl is actually on the money about "grampeador" sounding illegal. The word for staple, "grampo", also means "wiretap". The same applies to the verb, "grampear", either to staple or to wiretap, but the word "grampeador" is really just for stapler. Nobody uses that to mean person who does wiretapping.

Gelado vem de gelato (italiano) que é um gelado feito sempre com algum tipo de lacticínio.
Na verdade em Portugal usamos gelado para tudo, mas também usamos a palavra sorvete para nos referiremos às sobremesas que são feitas apenas com fruta tal como a origem do seu nome
Aqui no Brasil: sorvete acaba sendo o gelado industrializado, artificial, gelato seria o gelado artesanal, com técnica e receita italianas e sorbet o que você mencionou
Aqui no Brasil temos sorvete e sorbet, embora seja bem mais comum o sorvete, mas sorvete é feito geralmente com leite e sorbet é uma especie de sorvete de frutas sem leite

A maior parte dos "estrangeirismos" francês ou italiano, neste caso, são adulterados no PT brasileiro.
Em Portugal dizemos casa de banho porque antigamente era literalmente uma "casa" ou pequena na rua. Já não é da nossa geração, no entanto alguns dos nossos pais e muitos dos nossos avós ainda são desse tempo. 😅

Fact!European portuguese got a lot of influence from french, including the pronounce. Because of that, Brazilian portuguese sound more similar to the portuguese of 14th century than the portuguese spoken on Portugal nowadays.
The difference between Portuguese from Portugal and Portuguese from Brazil is crazy, when I went to Peru I heard two Portuguese talking but for me it was Russian and I found their accent super interesting and I started to notice it then I started to understand and I realized that it was Portuguese from Portugal, but I had to make an effort to understand what they were talking about

5:55 Portuguese here. "Grampeador" really isn't a common word in Portugal, and I was today years old when I first heard it, but its meaning seemed fairly obvious to me: "grampo" is used in Portugal to mean "clamp" (as in a tool you might use in woodworking to keep two pieces of wood together while the glue between them sets) or a device law enforcement might attach to the wheel of an improperly parked vehicle, but not usually to mean "staple", for which we use the word "agrafo" (incidentally, this is also the same word for paper staples or surgical staples, but not stitches). Knowing that our word "agrafador" means the device to place "agrafos", surely a "grampeador" places or applies "grampos", which, even though couldn't reasonably resemble woodworking clamps or other objects for which we'd use the word "grampo", but since both "grampo" and "agrafo" mean things that keep other things together, I could have guessed what it meant even without it saying so in the corner of the picture :)

O correto seria ela dizer que no brasil se pronuncia das duas formas, cariocas e recifenses por exemplo, pronunciam o S com som de X assim como os portugueses. Sou brasileira-canadense e sempre que me perguntam como se diz tal palavra em português, eu respondo com a minha pronúncia mas digo que dependendo da região pode ser muito diferente, especialmente palavras com S ou com TI/TE ou DI/DE. Não dá pra falar que no brasil se fala de um jeito e ponto final.
Mas ela deve ser paulista. No Rio de Janeiro Florianópolis e alguns lugares do norte falam o S xiado.

Actually she speaks an accent from São Paulo, Brazil. There, they really do speak with this S sound, but here in Rio we transform the S in an X very often, as the "Casas" exemple. Here, we would just say Casax, and Ixqueiro (lighter), Portugueix (Portuguese).
We don't have just one accent, but many across the country, and even with different words. If you would ask for a bread in the south, they would ask for a "Cacete", just like in Portugal.
Anyway, nice video, always good to compare the different ways to speak such a rich language as portuguese

As a Spanish speaker myself, I’m more used to Brazilian Portuguese since my father learned it and brought up the culture and music and movies from Brazil in my house. Also I traveled twice there, so I’d try to understand and imitate how the pronounce stuff, I understand a little and I speak it but not w so much fluency. On the other hand, European Portuguese sounds elegant and faster and I like it. I think I could understand it more if the girl from Portugal speaks a bit slower. I also went to Portugal for the first time few months ago and it was funny bc I didn’t want to speak English there so since idk much abt vocabulary from Portugal I spoke Spanish and they’d be so nice and reply in Portuguese but I’d understand!, it was interesting speaking differently but understanding each other (the power of Romance languages😋).I like both afterwards!!🇧🇷💚❤️🇵🇹

Strange, I speak Brazilian Portuguese and I don't find my language that pleasing to listen to, unless it's from a good song or a speaker with nice voice and cadence.
I'm a native portuguese speaker, and everywhere in Portugal there's a lot of Brazilian people and of course on TV and music there's lots of presence, so you grow up being accustomed to the different pronunciation and even some different words for the same thing. This video is very accurate, I'm grateful for seeing that on an english-based video. I can totally corroborate that for Portuguese people usually Brazilian feel like they are "singing" rather than "speaking", due to the sounds. Some part of it is that it reminds us of a lot of great Brazilian singers over the years, like Caetano Veloso, Gal Costa, etc, etc. It's interesting to learn that Brazilian people find that we sound like Russian or German :) At the same time it kinda makes me a little sad since the ideal image of correct portuguese pronunciation is like very poetic to the point of being romantic.
Russian and german are nothing alike, i dont know how one language be similar to other two languages which are not similar to each other 🤷🤷

Não querendo defender a moça do vídeo, mas pelo que vi ela não estava fazendo "troça" da portuguesa, só estava surpresa com a diferenças no idioma, você sabia que no próprio brasil existe diversos tipos de "sotaque" e que a depender o próprio brasileiro não consegue entender o outro que vive no mesmo pais, isso se dá pelo fato de sermos um pais gigante, e sim, desperta a curiosidade querer "saber" porque o outro fala tão diferente mesmo residindo num mesmo pais.

I'm Brazilian, and I find it funny that she never heard the word comboio, we don't actually use it on the same regular basis, but that's not as uncommon or unfamiliar to our understanding as she makes it seem to be. It sounds like an old fashioned word, "from the empire days" kinda thing, or from a period drama soap where they'd use whether the word bonde or comboio. We just don't use it in an up-to-date basis.

Já viu o vídeo deste mesmo canal comparando as pronúncias do francês da França, da Bélgica e do Canadá (Quebec)? As meninas da França e da Bélgica são muito piores e ficam caçoando da pobre menina do Quebec (especialmente a francesa, que é a mais mal-educada e arrogante de todas).
O conteúdo do canal é muito bom. Eles têm vários vídeos também comparando o inglês de vários países (Estados Unidos, Reino Unido, Austrália, África do Sul, Irlanda, Nova Zelândia, Canadá, etc.) e também o espanhol de vários países (Espanha, México, Colômbia, Cuba, Argentina, etc.). Há até mesmo um vídeo comparando o alemão da Alemanha, da Áustria e da Suíça. E vídeos comparando línguas diferentes, por exemplo dos grupos românico, germânico e eslavo. Vale a pena conferir.

I'm from Portugal and I'd never say that our Portuguese is the standard portuguese. In fact, I would say that Angolan Portuguese (or Brazilian Portuguese) is closer to classical Portuguese than what we speak here.

There are a lot of things that make perfect sense to me as a Frenchie ! And the Portuguese from Portugal is easier to understand for my French ears, but it all sounds cool.
Cidade sounds pretty much like 'ciudad' in Spanish
Agrafador is agrafeuse in French, and the verb is agrafer (same as agrafar)
Banda desenhada is literally the same as bande dessinée in French (:
We can say téléphone mobile and téléphone cellulaire so it's easy to understand both (the Belgians use 'cellulaire' more often than the French. But we'd say "portable" more spontaneously than all the other options).
Trem is closer to train but technically, comboio looks like the French word "convoi"
Casa de banho is closer to salle de bain - very easy to understand in both languages though
Little lunch - pequenho almoço - is exactly what we say for breakfast in French: petit déjeuner (: !

There's hundreds of words in common between Portuguese and Spanish. It was the same Language in Medieval Era around the XV Century. Then different pronounces according to Regions gave birth to different forms of writing those words. Cidade = Ciudad = City | Regiões = Regiones = Regions | Carro = Coche = Car | Fazer = Hacer = To Make | Caminhar = Caminar = Walk | Correr = Correr = To Run | And so on, so on.
Cidade doesn’t actually sound like Spanish ciudad, neither in the Brazilian nor on the European Portuguese pronunciation, but never mind.

The first bathrooms were built outside the main house, hence the name Casa de banho (bath house). Some people now say quarto de banho (literally bathroom)
Comboio - has the same latin origin of the english word convoy

O sotaque da brasileira é o paulistano padrão, no Rio e no nordeste do Brasil há várias similaridades com o sotaque português, como em cidades falado no nordeste, e casas, com o falado no Rio, faltou a ela dar esse destaque.
