Concealed carrying during a traffic stop - Do's and Don'ts
Vložit
- čas přidán 18. 07. 2017
- With over 13 million law abiding Americans carrying concealed firearms on their person these days, many of the routine traffic stops that happen daily are now happening between two armed people - the driver and a law enforcement officer. We met with the Calcasieu Parish Sheriffs Office to go over some things to keep in mind if you are carrying and are pulled over.
FYI, this information is specific to the state of Louisiana. Please check your state for compliance related laws.

I’m a deputy in Arizona. I never stress over armed drivers. The second amendment is our right. No permits needed in Arizona.
That is the way it should be. Any officer doing this is guilty of committing treason, violating the constitution of the united states of america is violating oath of office which is treason and a felony under state and federal law (perjury).
They are all in violation of title 18 USC section 241 conspiracy against rights and title 18 USC section 242 deprivation of rights under color of law.
The only gun in America that is illegal is a stolen gun.
Can you tell me if a cop knows that the tag on a car is owned by a person with a concealed weapon permit, assuming that they ran the tag number threw the police computer? I think its safe to say that police routinely do that and there is no reason not to!
@@johnnymac1580 the only way to know if a person has a CCW, is if they’re the owner of the tag, or you run their OLN ( drivers license). The only way a firearm has a hit, is if it’s stolen and reported. 99% off firearms come back as negative, meaning no record of firearm. If a gun is used in a crime, we have to do a trace, through the ATF, which can take some time.

@Fred Freddy I’d disagree. In most cases when a person carries a concealed weapon it’s sensible that they have something that can offer defensive action quickly.
Although it doesn’t feel justifiable when someone has three guns hidden in the vehicle, and an eight pound hand cannon with the action back to protect them. That’s illogical.
I'm an OTR truck driver and I carry EVERYWHERE... mainly because I don't trust anyone... I was in Georgia and went into a truckstop where a deputy sheriff was ordering his lunch.
He told me I needed to fix my shirt, I looked down and my pistol was visible. He was cool about it and asked if I had a CCP which I readily produced. We chatted about guns for a bit and went our separate ways but because I didn't mouth off to him... I left with no more holes than I walked in with.

I’ve been pulled over a few times while carrying. I never told them, they never asked, and everything was fine. Some states require you to notify, my state does not. I’m only required to tell them if they ask.
Yup! If I'm carrying I know my intentions, tbh it's none of the cops business if I'm carrying or not. And I wont be treated like a criminal to make them feel safe. There's still good cops out there but I lost most of my respect for them after seeing them march to governors and health departments unconstitutional lockdowns. If shit ever really hits the fan, unfortunately most cops will cave and do whatever it takes for their paycheck.
How could a state require that? That would violate constitutional rights, namely 5th and 6th.
@@jonnybaze7449 Sure does. And requiring a permit to carry in the first place violates the 2nd.

Very good advice. A few things that weren’t mentioned.
1) If it’s night, turn the dome light on.
2) Roll the windows down before the officer approaches.
3) if possible, pull into a parking lot, and pull up to a fixed object. This lets the officer know your not going to try and bolt.
4) even if your state doesn’t require you to advise them of firearms, it’s always a good idea.
4, no
Tried to do number 3 and the cop got mad because he thought I wasn't going to pull over
#4 WRONG. WRONG WRONG WRONG WRONG. Your advise is a great way to get shot.
There is no need for a cop to know you're armed unless they are going to search you for some reason. I'll never tell a cop I'm carrying unless he wants to pull me out of the car and frisk me.
If you an armed ccw holder and in the state of Louisiana, which is where this was filmed, you are required by law to inform if the reason you are involved with the officer is official business, like a traffic stop. Violation of the law will result in suspension and confiscation of the permit immediately.
Check the laws you carry or plan to carry in.

When I was a carrier, I always had driver and carry licenses at the window upon arrival of the officer, and they always thanked me for telling them.
I noticed how the cop is always standing slightly behind the driver, making the driver turn his/her head backwards and providing himself more safety and control over the situation. Smart move.
They're trained to stay by the b pillar. That way if the driver tries to take a shot, they have farther to travel and shoot close to their own face, giving the officer more time to respond.

Well, for years I carried conceal and did just as you say in this video and 9 times out of 10 it went the way of the first example, "thank you sir, you can go on your way". But that 1 in 10 times the officer wants to make a point of showing his opinion of conceal carry holders and removes you from the car, has you put your hands on your roof like a criminal, and then proceeds to disarm you...only to then place a loaded gun in the back seat next to my young son. I did file a complaint with his superior and he WAS disciplined. Point being, appreciate the video but the training needs to go both ways and there needs to be mutual respect.

Pro-tip: when being pulled-over, before the officer (deputy, whatever) has a chance to get to your vehicle, do the following:
1. If you have power windows, and it isn't raining, roll-down all windows
2. Turn on the dome light
3. Have your license, registration and proof of insurance on the dashboard in front of you
4. Radio (or other noise source) off
5. Place and keep your hands on the steering wheel at 10 and 2 (or 9 and 3, or whatever)
This woman did a couple of those things, but not all. It's a stupid idea to leave dark-tinted windows like that rolled-up, requiring the officer to knock on it.
#3 and #4 I agree with. The rest are ridiculous and in many cases will put a cop on edge that wasn't before.
Sorry not all of us are sheep. I live stream every police encounter and I highly suggest others do as well.Because cops lie,so know your rights. And be stern about it.
Pro response:
1) Abide by your local and state laws. Don't get pulled over.
I was trained to do the following: If you get pulled over, open all 4 windows (because officers might not see through the tint). Turn on your dome light. Finally put both hands high on the steering wheel. Then tell the officer that you have a firearm on you where it is. Most of the time, the officer will already know if you’re a CCW holder when they conduct the traffic stop. Then when the officer asks for you to produce license and insurance, kindly ask permission to reach into your pocket for your wallet and reach over to your glovebox. Most of the time, by following these simple steps, the officer will cut you loose without giving you a citation. Respect the badge, and they will show the same respect back.
It helps a lot if a police officer uses polite language with a kind tone of voice.🙂🙂🙂🙂
Or if you learn to respect authority regardless of tone of voice. Your attitude determines your altitude. The officer is the authority so you should respect it regardless of how he/she comes across.

Interesting... Back when my permit was still active every time I got pulled over every single cop would ask me if I had a gun. I talked to a cop and they said that when they ran your plates the first thing that would come up was that you were a permit holder. I did have my registration and drivers license ready and my hands on the door frame, my flashers on and all of the windows down. After checking she told me to have a nice day and the 60 mph was a few hundred yard yet. Being cool works most of the time. Mike

I just had my first traffic stop since I got my CCP. My firearm was in the console between the seats. When he got to my window he asked for my stuff as usual and I couldn't decide to tell him or not. I have had people that say never say a word and some say to get it out in the open (the fact I am armed, not the firearm itself) and I chose the latter. If I were a cop, I would want to know. So I said "sir, just so you know, I have a CCP and a firearm in the console" He thanked me for telling him, and went back to his car with my paperwork. I was going 50 in a 30 in a school zone. It's normally 45 when schools out. I had just forgot. He came back and said that because they had so many complaints about speeders, he had to give me a ticket. But he wrote it for 40 in a 30, which dropped it down to the lowest level. Because I had a valid license, plates and proof of insurance, plus I was forth coming about my CCP, I believe that is why he really gave me a break. I was going to get the ticket no matter what. So, take what you want from this story.

Philando Castile appeared to do everything this video recommends, and yet within seconds of informing the officer he had a firearm, he was shot to death.
Honestly thats why I believe laws requiring drivers to disclose that they are carrying a firearm at a traffic stop are not a good idea. In that case it was an overly nervous officer who was unfamiliar with the situation. While he was not found to be criminally liable he is not longer and LEO and the family received a significant settlement from the city. With that said I would consider that case an outlier when it comes to lawful conceal carriers and traffic stops. Most go by without the LEO ever even knowing you were carrying.

In 51 years of life I've never been mugged. Does that mean I'm stupid to conceal carry? I'd sure feel stupid if I stopped carrying because of statistics and then got mugged the next day. Likewise. knowing that I was shot by the one poorly trained officer out of 100,000 would be cold comfort to my loved ones. Like I said before I do NOT believe in gambling MY life on the assumed competence of another. So give me the ticket officer. No need for you to know I'm armed.
"The officer's not there to argue"? Ever been to Memphis?
Andy D they do nothing but argue. Their goal is to make money from you.
I bypass Memphis whenever possible!
Takes two people to argue. :)
Or Knoxville
Or New Mexico. They'll throw you in jail and impound your car quick as a rattlesnake strikes. $

I don't think the person he pulled over is there to be there at all.

Excellent complication
You seem pretty nervous, are you ok? Driver: Yes Sir
Cop: yes sir or yeah sure?
Driver: OH SHIT!!!
It kinda reminds of the scene from "Super Troopers."
"You're arguing and you're carrying a gun."
"Yeah, well, so are you."
dont argue with police over complying tho
Conservative: "Comply with police or you deserve whatever happens."
...
Police: "Sir this Applebee's only allows guests wearing a mask. Please wear one or leave."
Conservative: "Muh freedums cannot be abolished!"
They know nothing bad happens to them when they disobey because they're not as likely to be seen as a threat. If only conservatives knew that black people view the police the same way they view the ATF. It's just the name difference that keeps them from realizing they're dealing with the same shit: a system of authority that too often assumes guilt until you prove your innocence.
Most important: Never say "I have a GUN."
Adam Yelling it out the window as the cop approaches is a bad idea too
Waving your CCP card in one hand, gun in the other
Well youll have to let the officer know that u do have a weapon in the car or on you
"i am licensed and I am armed, (insert location of weapon here)
Randy She *points to anus*
*Yeah, we will film it here.*
“Hey ma”am (GUN SHOT), know why I pulled you today?”
I LOVE America lol!
The only thing I would add to this is: if at night, turn the interior lights on. Have your wallet/papers where you can place them on the dash with the least amount of movement and then have your hands clearly at the 10 and 2 o'clock positions on the steering wheel. For example, I keep my paper work under the visor and my wallet in the cubby hole. It requires little movement so when the officer sees the paper work on the dash, that should help make things less tense.
Great job, very informative and professionally done!! Thanks for all your service!!!!!
When he unarmed her I thought that was her thong coming out with the gun
Me too actually haha
My dick actually jumped a little
Was hoping she had a bra holster

People need to listen to this one!! Good video!!
Can I just say that I love how there’s a cop who’s name could be shortened to Capt. Anger. Sounds like a new marvel character.
I haven't seen a cop act that nice in any fair size city.
i have.
@Lover of Freedom Did you kill someone? 😂 (Just a joke k?)
San Antonio cops are pretty laid back.
Me neither

A legal firearm owner is the least likely threat to LEO's and i always comply. But I also respect anyone who questions a traffic stop if it infringes on their rights
I let it happen n fight the ticket in court. I’m simply not gonna argue with these guys. Most times they are more lenient when you’re not debating with them. It’s better to be cool n manipulate them then Show them how upset you are n argue with them.
"And I always comply"
LOL
As if that's going to matter.
@@Knockaswagga i let one write me a ticket for going 51 in a 30 even though I was in a 45. I said I was actually in the 45. He said “but you couldn’t have slowed down by the time you got to the 30 sign” I just kept my mouth shut and was courteous and mentioned nothing of court. I showed up in court.......I had our conversation audio recorded 😂🤔. So I go to court and he tells his spew then I ask what expertise he has in the deceleration rate of a Ford Focus, he said your honor that’s irrelevant so then Cop was in disbelief when I let the judge hear the recording. Ticket went buh bye. The sad part is that if it wasn’t recorded the cop would’ve gotten away with lying and probably has many times
@@Knockaswagga don’t get belligerent…but if they ask you “do you know how fast you were going?” And you’re like “ oh I don’t know, maybe 70 or 75” you just admitted to speeding assuming you’re in a 65 zone. You also have a 5th amendment right…give them the documents you’re required to give and don’t say more than is needed to complete the stop…you’re just giving them more evidence.
@@joeyjoe-joejr.shabadoo9448 i agree with this, but i have gotten out of tickets twice conceding that the officer had me dead to rights.
I’ve been armed around officers and have never had an issue. From it being holstered to a rifle in my hand. It really is all about your attitude (was actively hunting with my rifle). Had any officer requested to disarm me, I would absolutely comply - I’ve nothing to fear of the officer and if I maintain respect, the officer will have nothing to fear of me.
great info
philando castile got stoped for a breaklight, he did just the same as the girl in the video, 3 seconds after he says the word "firearm" the officer shoots him 7 times. Theres full video.
It's hilarious how you only get 9 likes for the truth when he's melinated.

Foster Hall I was waiting for that... and the outcry from so called 2-A activist. Selective, aren’t they..
I suppose it was "justified " and no payment. Seen a vid were cop shot an undercover simply bc he had a gun. Six bullet holes netted him nearly six million. Didn't rule that justified, go figure.

They’ve sworn to uphold the United States constitution. With this being said, where does it say that a permit is required for a firearm?
It's not, in Louisiana you can carry a firearm in your car and on your person openly without a permit, it's when you carry concealed in public that a ccw is required.
very informative and well put together video on concealed carry kudos to the creator on a well made video
This how allot of porn starts

Always scream "I'M ARMED AND DANGEROUS" when pulled over. Then repeatedly scream about your right to bear arms!
AM I BEING DETAINED!
Lol an do a lot of arm movements too
scott lee Scream this I just ESCAPED FROM PRISON AND I HAVE A GUN! See how well that goes over
"I HAVE A BOMB STRAPPED TO MY CHEST, I'M ON MY WAY TO AN ELEMENTARY SCHOOL . THIS IS NOT A DETONATOR. IT'S MY CCW PERMIT. THIS IS NOT A JOKE" is also probably inappropriate.
scott lee I did every thing you said and I was in court what did I do wrong
Officers usually know if you are carrying before they even get to the drivers side window. If the registered owner of the vehicle has a CCW it will show up on the officers terminal when they run the plate.
Alex is that for all states?
Mostly yes, but it depends more on the software that officers have on their terminals, rather than the state they operate in. For instance, in my state of Washington, officers use "Spillman" which does show CCW's on a RO of a vehicle.
Alex yeah that’s right so they should treat you like a law abiding citizen and not even ask. They don’t hand out CCW to criminals do they no, so they shouldn’t treat u like one. They should know you r a good guy and treat u like one they should think he or she doesn’t hv a criminal background because I
They hv a CCW that’s the most intensive national background check anyone can hv. They r playing game with u if they even ask. They work for me I pay their wages they don’t pay mine.
This is not the case in California. Ccw check out only with a license check. By all agencies.
Aaron Allen once they run my license plate they already know I hv CCW license all I’m saying is having a taillight out, failure to make a complete stop or not using a turn single doesn’t give the right to disarm me for non violent crime.i’m not an ass hole I just know when cops and not all cop over step their boundaries and abuse their authority. But cops around here r very nice 👍🏼 I never have any problems. I feel sorry for gun owners in California which it seems like they treat you like a criminal first instead of a law abiding citizen second just with laws restricting the amount of ammo u can carry says it all. One word of advice move if u can.
In Tennessee you are not required to tell the officer but on the couple of occasions I have been stopped, my hands stay at 12 o-clock on the steering wheel and the first words out of my mouth are I have a carry permit and am armed. If it is dark the dome light goes on first and the window goes down. It is just reduces stress for everyone.
I love the officer stopping the red truck trying not to laugh
