I was issued with the R-1 during my SADF military service 1980/81.....it worked perfectly, but not for all some guys experienced storings (jamming) which could be rectified by adjusting the gas port,in that respect i think , (in my opinion) the HK G- 3 was more idiot proof!

Amazing ! you are saying exactly what i commented on another channel a few days ago, the USA in the early period of the Vietnam war would have been better served using the FAL or HK G- 3 until such time that they could iron out the teething troubles on the new M- 16 (which also became a great platform) Time is needed to sort out the snags the early M- 16's were thrown into the thick of it ,and many a GI paid with his life for that initial ureliability!
