Maybe the Smiling Friends are on that side to brighten up the dilapidated part of the town.

So their philosophy seems to be "bettering your life isnt worth it because you might fail, and even if there was a chance you could succeed, you'll still die someday and it was for nothing"
Which was broken in the episode by, 1, they did succeed, to the point the boss went nuts over it, and 2, Grim is actually afraid of death, he actually thinks his life matters, deep down.
But that was broken because Grim and Gnarly *did* die.
