The minor mistakes of "Hey boss, it's Pim here now" is what I value in acting. He knows your voice, you don't need to announce who you are, just talk. It's just something you do when you don't know someone all that well, and also overestimating how confusing it is talking to 4 people on the phone. One of my favorite movies is Grave of the Fireflies, and it's because the movie is filled with these moments of unnecessary information that make the situations feel naturally occuring. The scene in the beginning where the sister is asking for her doll while the brother is struggling to find it, not noticing his sister pointing directly at it since he's looking so hard elsewhere is one of those situations that has unnecessary hang-ups that add so much liveliness and believablility to the acting. It's not too hard to add either. When characters in movies never misspeak or have very direct, and especially dramatic, answers then it sucks me out of it super quickly. It just feels all orchestrated and contrived, and it usually spoils what happens because there's always a logical leap for what's next, because you know that any information given to you is pertinent to the plot, and isn't just details added for conversation between the characters.
I love the fact that they made the boss’s audio him being on the phone instead of the usual ‘cut to character location’ with perfect audio. That phone distortion is just a lovely touch to an awesome episode.
The boss on the phone was so incredibly realistic. I’ve never heard the tongue clicks and the “shoot!” Done in media before but it’s so spot on. “You picked the worst time to go.. yeah you picked the worst time to go” was so funny to me for some reason.
And then the pink guy shooting a "yeah we could figure it out by ourselves" then realized it was kinda rude so he quickly changed subject... that's 100% something that would happen in real life. Amazing script there!
I love when Pim says “It seems like you guys are ganging up on me” Alan immediately butts in and starts arguing with Pim at the same time as Charlie lmfao
I know the joke is obvious at this point but I love how this kind of inadvertently relates to that one meme about “top 10 things to do in Brazil” and the only option is “leave”. Because that’s exactly what they do in the episode.
Charlie is so wholesome by the end wanting to give Pim a break for his mistake and trying to put a positive outlook on the group with the google doc idea. Felt so human!
Yeah. I mean, I get genuinely uncomfortable when they bicker so its kind of nice to see Alan having a similar reaction to me in that moment, like he's just looking at the menu trying to ignore the situation. And then they try to make it wholesome but its not sappy and it feels realistic.
Charlie mentioning he spoke with Glep about budgeting is so fucking funny. I love that this tiny green critter is a fully functioning adult who sits down to have discussions about budgeting for a holiday.
I swear to god this show isn't scripted, they just lock the VAs in a room and record them talking because the dialogue is just so insanely realistic lol. It flows so well, never heard dialogue this relatable in any show
Do you interact with many people IRL? Im serious. I dont get how mundane dialogue makes a show "great" or "funny". This show is like feminist stand up where you clap instead of laugh.
It's worth mentioning that this isn't just a long gag, this was the entire final episode. Nothing wacky or crazy happens. It's just this for a whole episode. And that's how the show ends.
It's the way he's the weirdest guy in the room until he's presented with something even more weird/uncomfortable than he is (Wall guy) then he suddenly becomes the most reasonable one.
I love the way they do this. This doesn't feel like a script. It feels so genuine and real that it feels like at any moment they themselves could make the decision to write a script for their own show.
If you just black out the screen and show this to someone blindy. I would 100% bet that they would think that it's just a group of people on a business trip arguing about money
I love how you go into this episode expecting it to be the usual vacation episode of a cartoon where the characters get into wacky shenanigans and adventures but it turns out to be a complete subversion of that. Instead we get a hilariously realistic scenario of miscommunications between friends and the stresses of trying to book a hotel room, all animated in ONE shot for the entire 11+ minutes. This show is fucking brilliant.
Ironic but relatable, because I know when it feels like youre being ganged up on but youre not, and when someone says something like that and you cant just not comment because they arent seeing the situation wrong and you dont want to make them feel bad, but in joining in your kind of ironically add to the stress of the situation. Idk. Man this show hits a specific thing in the brain doesnt it though?

And just have a bunch of A-lister stars only have a few voice lines too. Like have Scarlett Johansson hold the door for Charlie and/or Pim and say you're welcome
The phone call might be the best thing I have ever seen/listened to in my life. It's so realistic, like everyone has had an awkward phone call asking someone for help when they didn't want to, all just for that person to not help them at all. Brilliant.
and ur just like "thanks for picking up anyway...b y e". Like u think at first there's no harm in calling (which charlie says here) or u might regret not calling later, but afterward u just feel stupid
They definitely had a guideline for this conversation and just riffed for it, even getting the Boss's actor on the phone on mic to contribute. This is perfect.
This is the most casual conversation I have ever seen in a cartoon, I swear the actors did a one take in the same room and actually called the voice actor while playing the characters, its really well done.

It's not too hard to add either. When characters in movies never misspeak or have very direct, and especially dramatic, answers then it sucks me out of it super quickly. It just feels all orchestrated and contrived, and it usually spoils what happens because there's always a logical leap for what's next, because you know that any information given to you is pertinent to the plot, and isn't just details added for conversation between the characters.
good way to put it. smiling friends breaks the adult cartoon mold in the best ways.
2:02 something about that stutter is so realistic
I know right I swear I’ve done that hundreds of times
I love the fact that they made the boss’s audio him being on the phone instead of the usual ‘cut to character location’ with perfect audio. That phone distortion is just a lovely touch to an awesome episode.
Wouldn’t be surprised if an actual phone audio was used
Also saves on animation budget too. Very clever
Im pretty sure its just some highpass filtering and a bit of lowpass filtering.
@@DrizzyB i dont think it is, it has those unmistakable phone artifacts i think they actually just called the voice actor lmao
I like to think that they called va for mr boss at a random time in the day and he just went with it.
I love when Pim says “It seems like you guys are ganging up on me” Alan immediately butts in and starts arguing with Pim at the same time as Charlie lmfao
The waitress coming in and accidentally de-escalating the situation is so great. Feels so real
I know the joke is obvious at this point but I love how this kind of inadvertently relates to that one meme about “top 10 things to do in Brazil” and the only option is “leave”. Because that’s exactly what they do in the episode.
Joke was not obvious to me, seemed like a non-joke but yeah maybe missing the context.
Seems like a coincidence.
except they didn't leave because there was a major aviation disaster right before the credits
No, they were arguing about how Pim didn't book a hotel in Brazil. Don't think they were referencing that.
@@Breadatone of course I knew that dude. That’s s why I said “inadvertently”, because it’d be a pretty huge fucking coincidence if that was the case.
Charlie is so wholesome by the end wanting to give Pim a break for his mistake and trying to put a positive outlook on the group with the google doc idea. Felt so human!
I like how pim takes responsibility for the mistake and they all understand.
Yeah. I mean, I get genuinely uncomfortable when they bicker so its kind of nice to see Alan having a similar reaction to me in that moment, like he's just looking at the menu trying to ignore the situation. And then they try to make it wholesome but its not sappy and it feels realistic.
@@Yipper64 Pretty sure Alan is the one 'normal' character on the show.
@@BigMikeMcBastard lmao, especially when he and charlie were nomming in bye break room amarite xd
Awh damn I see that profile pic Michael. “get a drink have a good time now, welcome to paradise!”
Charlie mentioning he spoke with Glep about budgeting is so fucking funny. I love that this tiny green critter is a fully functioning adult who sits down to have discussions about budgeting for a holiday.
That phone call alone felt so real and relatable, freaking love it
"I was talking to Glep, I know he was budgeting on this"
That this funny little critter is so responsible tickles my funny bone.
our little guy is a little man
You would think he would have some Mr Frog money left.
@@HSAC.WDTK.DTKT.LFO. He did only play the one scene and them Mr. Frog stole the show
Glep is a grown man with a wife
It's weird if he doesn't
I swear to god this show isn't scripted, they just lock the VAs in a room and record them talking because the dialogue is just so insanely realistic lol. It flows so well, never heard dialogue this relatable in any show
Do you interact with many people IRL? Im serious. I dont get how mundane dialogue makes a show "great" or "funny". This show is like feminist stand up where you clap instead of laugh.

The conversation with the Boss is even funnier considering how crazy they're making him in season 2
It's worth mentioning that this isn't just a long gag, this was the entire final episode. Nothing wacky or crazy happens. It's just this for a whole episode. And that's how the show ends.
I'm so glad that Allan is becoming more of a character, he really has the personality to be the 3rd "protagonist" of the series
The tritagonist let's goooo
Clearly it’s Glip
It's the way he's the weirdest guy in the room until he's presented with something even more weird/uncomfortable than he is (Wall guy) then he suddenly becomes the most reasonable one.
Dude I HOPE SO Alan is so underrated 👀
Yeah they just need to have more episodes centered around his character
Whenever Family Guy tries to do this style of humor, it feels very awkward and forced. Here, it works naturally.
“Holy crap Lois we’re doing improve comedy”
@@sebastian-zi9yq "Ah geez Lois this is uncomfortable like the time we got stuck in a Brazilian airport."
It feels very awkward but in a natural way

Everyone doing the same 4 hand gestures lol
I just love that the entire episode... Glep is just chilling. 😂
lmao glep the main character
I’ve watched this episode like 6 times and never noticed glep holy crap
I love the way they do this. This doesn't feel like a script. It feels so genuine and real that it feels like at any moment they themselves could make the decision to write a script for their own show.
charlie and pim both yelling at the other to let them finish for like 10 seconds is so accurate to real arguments
and charlie saying "go ahead" more than once which literally interrupts pim trying to continue lol
If you just black out the screen and show this to someone blindy. I would 100% bet that they would think that it's just a group of people on a business trip arguing about money

the way smiling friends put their characters into these situations that you would experience in real life is what makes the show so special
God even down to Alan hanging up before Mr. Boss even finishes saying "See ya!", how are these guys so good at naturalistic conversation
Ayyy my old pfp
Years of experience from Onney Plays
I love how Alan joins in to say "we're not ganging up on you" a little ironic
Ironic but relatable, because I know when it feels like youre being ganged up on but youre not, and when someone says something like that and you cant just not comment because they arent seeing the situation wrong and you dont want to make them feel bad, but in joining in your kind of ironically add to the stress of the situation.
Idk. Man this show hits a specific thing in the brain doesnt it though?
Well, he felt attacked when he got accused of doing that and the natural response was to defend himself.
I especially love how he stops midway and closes his eyes before backing down like he realized what he was doing, it's just so real. The guys working on this show have such attention to detail, lmao
@@liamjm9278 that's the thing about telling a group of people that they're ganging up on you. Naturally they feel accused, and in a way it becomes a self-fulfilling prophecy.
also that Pim already got the plane tickets, why would he also be the one to book the hotel. Also, not to pile up on him but the amount of times he screwed up in season 1 you think they wouldn't put him in charge of either task.
This is one of the most realistic feeling arguments in TV history.
Something about cartoon characters having such a regular ass conversation is so funny to me
0:53 the argument derailing out of courtesy during an interruption because they're still in public giving everyone a moment to collect their thoughts and think of an ACTUAL plan in a shitty situation is so ridiculously realistic even down to one person having like 0% battery in their phone and using someone else's to make a group phone call lmfao
lol the frame
I love how this is the most normal interaction that they’ve had with Mr. Boss. It’s almost as if they just called the voice actor during his free time.
"hey marc we're not gonna tell you when, but sometime tomorrow we're gonna call you in-character as the smiling friends employees, and we need you to respond as mr. boss. we're not giving you the context now, just wait for the call"
@@tiablue9106 made me lol
I just noticed the sun is setting throughout the scene, the dynamic animation (like their eyes moving around) is always wonderful, this show is a masterpiece of passion and detail
The fact that Mr. Boss on the phone sounds ungodly realistic freaks me out
Their conversation with Mr. Boss was scarily realistic. I think I’ve had phone calls with my boss that sounded exactly like that
we need a movie length production that is literally just this the entire film
And just have a bunch of A-lister stars only have a few voice lines too. Like have Scarlett Johansson hold the door for Charlie and/or Pim and say you're welcome
@@Tufftism Lol it's always funny when movies do that, a good example is the lego movie, but some of those actors aren't that popular rn
My Dinner with Andre? IDK.
2 years from now the movie Smiling Friends Go Back to Brazil will come out
That’s a terrible idea
0:28 both Charlie and Pim trying to get a word in always kills me
The entrance of the waitress and that third party entry calming down the arguing to avoid embarrassment is SO realistic
The “oh hey guys” from Mr. Boss kills me. It’s so simple but so funny dude idk how to explain it
Probably helps that you expect him to be zany.
He was like "ok and...? Why are you calling me?", The way smiling friends makes dialogue so natural is incredible
The way the situation defuses after everyone has to act normal around the waitress is so realistic
this was probably my favorite episode just because of the dialogue
Dude it was so awkward, I got major second hand embarrassment. Lol
Agreed I love this episode
They definitely had a guideline for this conversation and just riffed for it, even getting the Boss's actor on the phone on mic to contribute. This is perfect.
This feels so natural and funny
This is the most casual conversation I have ever seen in a cartoon, I swear the actors did a one take in the same room and actually called the voice actor while playing the characters, its really well done.
The realism of the argument and phone call adds a whole other layer of comedy
It's incredible how realistic this conversation is
The fucking death glare when pim says "we screwed up a bit" lmao.
That fucking part of this mother fucking cartoon fucks me up every fucking time
I can't believe people hated this special, I love it when cartoon characters talk like real people. Reminds me of the Godfather argument scene from _Family Guy_
I love how the phone call wasn't used as a gag or for a punchline. It was like the most normal ass phone conversation i've seen in a cartoon and it makes it hilarious.
Gleb is just too precious for this world. He never complains and all he cares about right now are those chips.
Finally found someone who agrees. There's always this one friend who, in a heat of a group argument, just eats his chips and not saying a word.

Why the heck this is feel like genuinely daily real life conversations, i love it
Lmao I've been in multiple arguments in restaurants and as soon the waiter gets there you have to act like everything is fine
LOL, it's these little details that make this scene so good
The details of the situation, the actual voice of someone in the phone call, the back and forward argument, the stress expression, the sound of silence being awkard when the waiter comes in, its fucking diamond (instead of sayin gold)

I love how Humanised these characters are. It's not just like, Pim is the happy nice one, Charlie is the cynical mean one, they have so many dimensions and layers to them, it's amazing. This show is just, done so well. Comedic wise and Story telling wise
Charlie's a realist, he's not normally a mean character.
Can we appreciate the amazing view that table has?
I love how this whole episode was "filmed in one take", or whatever the animated version is. Not a single cut throughout the whole episode. Really added to the sort of realism.
why is glep flipping a french fry into his mouth the most well animated thing in the series
