The worst part about the parents dying is that the guy probably spent that entire month planning a funeral, dealing with lawyers and insurance people, and preparing his parents' house to be sold; all in addition to going through the grieving process. It was most definitely not a mental break and probably took a huge toll on him.

In the second one, the problem isn't the advice he gave, but the clear lack of respect he has for his brother. I feel like it would be so easy to give similar advice in a way that would help him bond with his brother rather than insult him, but because he clearly treats his brother like he's below him, you know he gave that advice in the most snobbish, condescending way imaginable.

For me he just severally lacked basic emotional intelligence. Like seriously, His brother's best friend isn't an imaginary character who's traits you need to 'show not tell'. It's a REAL person that people in the funeral will probably have known. The goal of the eulogy is not to entertain bored readers with writing tricks, it's to speak from the heart and say goodbye to a big relationship and accepting the end of things. He critiqued the eulogy as if it was a eulogy a book character would tell in an emotional scene towards the end of the book. That's the problem. I like to write stories too but damn did that story pissed me off

If he was actually as good of a writer as he thinks he is, he would realize that for each piece you have to consider the purpose and the audience. Oh my god the eulogy one pissed me off so much 😭 I used to be a writing consultant and one of the most important things we were taught is to sandwich criticism between compliments. There’s almost always something to be complimented in someone’s work!!! And they need to know that!! It also makes criticisms and suggestions much easier to swallow.
The other things is like…. Eulogies are meant to be read out loud, which makes what should be criticized different. I agree that adding heartwarming personal stories is always a good way to go in writing pieces, but the criticism like sentence variation and “cliches” was out of line IMO. As long as he’s writing in a way that would sound natural for him to speak, that’s what should matter. Sure this guy might be a good writer but he’s a fucking asshole

The thumbnail got me. When I was a retail manager I hired a kid fresh out of high school. He assured me was ready to work and show up on time. His first day, he doesn't show up. I call and call, leave him voice-mails and everything. Come to find out, he had gotten in a wreck and died 2 days before. So somewhere out there, there are voicemails from me on a dead man's phone, with me asking shit like "so are you coming in today or not?". I think about that every now and then.

Some of the advice he gave could've been constructive if he wasn't so far up his own ass. In stead of saying it was "thematically trite", he could've just said "Hey, maybe you could make it a bit more personal by adding happy memories of him to illustrate what you mean". His brother being able to express and process his emotions is more important right now than his writing being up to literary standards.

My father passed away and it took me six months to start with the mourning process. I would see something that reminded me of my dad and start tearing up so I’d leave the sales floor to use the restroom. Splash some cold water on my face and go back out there. One closing shift I was talking with my supervisor and I was saying I was sad about my dad passing away. He said… “Wasn’t that six month ago? Aren’t you over that yet?” … 10 years later I friend him on Facebook. I ask him how his parents are doing? He says that his mom passed away a few months ago… I then rewrote the whole situation back to him and asked, “why in the world would a person be over their parent passing away in six months?” He apologized for it even though he couldn’t remember saying it. He did believe me. Anyways I wish I would have said something in the moment but I was only 23 years old.

If that happened to me I would want to quit my job right away, but getting fired actually entitles you to severance benefits you wouldn't get if you resigned.
