My only criticism of the movie was that it was way too short. I loved the opening, how it immersed us into the Mario bro's life and family. But as soon as they entered the tunnel the rest of the movie was go here, go there, now we go there. It was great, but it could've used a little more plot building and mabey some deeper dialogue and story building between Mario and Peach.
What i heard is that the movie was short due it being a kids movie. Most kids can't sit through a 2 hour movie. i didn't have an issue with the time. My kids loved it. i loved it. My daughter wanted me to buy it right away to watch at home lol.

@@rafaelochoa9776 I've watched lot of animated films that are an hour and a half. And they're paced greatly. It's not much of a matter of how much time you have, it's a matter of how you balance and execute. Don't get me wrong, I find the Mario film decent. But this is honestly not a good excuse.
If that didn't happen, audience reviews be like: "It took too long to get to where we wanted to go!"
"I tried so hard....to like this film....but in the end, it doesn't even matter"
"The story is paper thin"

For me Bowser singing his "Peaches" song, both during the movie & for the post credit scene was cringy. Seeing a big menacing villain do that musical number and gushing over Peach was embarrassing.

I thought that was a shitty move on his part! Mario had just saved his life.
Finally saw it on Netflix. While not boring it had no soul or depth. Separating the brothers at the start was dumb but I guess they did not want a woman to be a damsel in distress so instead made Peach an absolute badass. Would have been better to keep the bros together and they need to rescue Peach like in the games. 6/10 from me.
I liked a bunch of the callbacks. The track skip on Rainbow Road was fun. Brought me back.

I’m with Alex (as usual) on this one. This story was soulless. Princess Peach was TERRIBLE! Like, she had no real personality. We got no back story on her. Dumb. She’s just really good at everything.
I found the Yandere Bowser really funny and the Luma as a Nihilist is someone i want a Merch from him.

It's weird how every critic I've seen found different aspects of the movie funny / unfunny. I would have thought Jack Black's Bowser performance was universally praised. It's really well done and I like the angle they went with him. It's just the film needed more of this stuff instead of being overstuffed with shallow set pieces that have no proper story buildup.

I'm harsh on movies these days and I really liked this movie. It was refreshing honestly.
Same. Reviewers don't know how to have fun. I've watched plenty of Oscar winning movies and I can enjoy deeper films. Seems like most adults and reviewers are stuck on "does not understand fun" mode.
Refreshingly generic and predictable? Felt like a worse minions movie.

I’m over 30 years old and I had a smile the whole time! I laughed several times and had a blast from start to finish. Can’t wait for more!

It's funny I totally agree with all of your guys criticisms and yet I still had a great time. I definitely wish it had more heart like a Pixar film but I was entertained enough to really have fun with this one. The Easter eggs and score were great but you're right the pop music was over the top (which i just accepted and enjoyed after a while) and some of the chemistry was just ok. Still enjoyed it overall but appreciate you guys always being honest. Keep it up
I agree that the rock songs were WAY out of place. The actual soundtrack with the classic Mario songs were really well done. They didn’t need the 80s rock songs at all.
Peach is a BIT too powerful.
Mario and Luigi voices and dynamics were really good.
Charles Martinet’s voiced characters were perfect.
Toad was absolutely spot on perfect.
DK needs a new voice actor.
All the Easter eggs and references were very natural and well done.
The sequel will take it to a new level, this one I feel was just establishing what this world is and getting all the nostalgia out of the way.
As someone who grew up playing all the games this movie kicked ass. So many Easter eggs.

@@llcoolg6758 What about playing more recent mario games on switch like mario odyssey or mario 3d world(which has coop for up to 4 players) those games are relatively modern and pretty good. Mario 3d world is a great game that whole family can play in coop.
I work at a movie theater, I've seen countless grown ass adults dressed up from head to toe in Mario character costumes.
Took my 8-year-old and she loved it!

I just see this film as a tribute and love letter to the Super Mario franchise. It wasn’t the best film in the world, but it was enjoyable enough for me to smile while watching all of the characters go on this fun adventure.

This movie had nothing to present. If it wasn't a movie about Mario, I would give them a 5/10. But they have ruined a great potential. They had the most famous and most beloved characters in the history of gaming and the least they could do was to make us entertained or laughed, but they didn't succeed any of them. I can't believe that i,a nintendo and Mario fan and animation lover, was so bored that I started working with my phone!!

I actually fell asleep during the movie. I didn't like the jack black peaches peaches peaches peaches bit, it took me out of it as I just saw Jack Black. I honestly prefer the cartoon show version of bowser.
I'm 47 and I LOVED it. It's pure fun. My 4 year old was transfixed. I am definitely going to take my brothers to watch it in 4DX. How can you not laugh when his Grandpa missed the spaghetti??
My 7 year old LOVED it too. My wife and I were bored to tears - I honestly would have walked out if my son wasn't enjoying it so much. Beautiful movie, but the story and writing just didn't do it for me.

I will say I think Charlie Day as Luigi was great, and I hope they just make a standalone Luigi's mansion movie with him. Also I think people blew the Chris Pratt thing way out of proportion, and he was "fine" as Mario, wasn't anything wrong with it. Seth Rogan as DK was very meh though. Also the real life song choices actually made me groan out loud.
A Luigi's Mansion movie would be beyond perfect. That's something I wanted since before this movie's first trailer.
I don't really like Chris Pratt's public persona much, so I don't say this as a fan of his at all, but he was really good. He's a talented actor and he seems to always take his roles seriously, it was obvious he tried to bring something unique to this and I think it worked just fine.

The only channel with the balls to say this. This movie succeeded because it was Mario. If this was a generic animation movie with Illumination's name on it alone people would've teared it to shreds. I hope the eventual second movie will be better and do better but I'm not expecting much. They made over a billion doing the bare minimum so that sets the stage. Would love to be wrong but that's usually how it goes unfortunately...

@YOGI I think you missed my point, I was stating the fact that no mario game has ever been focused on story, character development, or plot, the movie did a great job creating a narrative for why things took place despite the lack of story points to pull from the games, why would anybody expect the movie to be story rich when the games have never been, the movie was 10/10 in my book, my kids loved it and there was no woke bullshit and no LGBTQ bullshit shoved in my kids or my face.
I couldn’t disagree more.. Im 42 years old and I loved this movie. And you said Sonic and Sonic 2 were better? No way. I had to fast forward some of Sonic to even watch it..(the real actors parts were SO bad…) But this movie was funny and fun. I enjoyed it.❤❤

What a lame defense. There are lot of rated G animated films that has great stories, developed characters, and clever writing. Heck, lot of them, I would consider to be masterpieces. So expecting the Mario film to be great as those animated films with the same demographic shouldn't be crazy to ask for. This is coming from myself who finds the Mario film decent, you're really underestimating how great animated film for all ages can be.
4:20 - 4:57 Did you even watch the movie? Or maybe you just have very lousy memory?
First off...Peach gets captured by Bowser TWICE in the movie...the first time when she agrees to marry him, the second time in Brooklyn.
Second..in the flashback of how Peach came to the Mushroom Kingdom, they show her training on the course...the scene is very brief, but it's all the movie needs to show for you to understand that she did have to train. She even mentions earlier in the movie to Mario about her training.
Third...Peach is not the hero of the film, and Mario does not "bumble" his way through the entire movie. Mario pretty much masters the training course after just a day or two of training. He defeats Donkey Kong in the arena, he kicks a bunch of Koopa Troopa butt on Rainbow Road, he saves Donkey Kong from drowning, he smashes his way through waves of enemies in the Mushroom Kingdom, he saves Luigi, he saves the entire Mushroom Kingdom from being obliterated by a Banzai Bill, and him and Luigi save Peach and Brooklyn from Bowser at the very end.
I swear, you guys didn't even watch the movie at all. I think you only watched the trailers, where some of the earlier ones gave you the impression that Mario was going to be a bumbling idiot the entire movie and Peach was going to be the hero.
agreed, i dont think the whole "girl boss dont need no man" was that bad here... i hate woke feminist nonsense, i absolutely call that shit out. I do think it was odd she called mario a nobody, in a mario movie and seemed better at obstacle courses than mario. But mario got PLENTY of moments to shine, even lugi got some action towards the end.

This move is fanservice for Mario fans...it encapsulates a Mario adventure. To me it felt like an adaptation of the Nintendo Power mario comics in the 90s with more easter eggs

The problem with this movie is that none of the celebrity casting with the exception of Jack Black with Bowser isn't justified in the slightest. It is something that really pisses me off about modern animation features, yes I know there are great voice actors in this movie like KMR but it's not enough to get me to even consider watching this.

Me too, to many character issues and the movie tried to make me laugh at mario.
Obviously this was an origin movie. Also take note that Shigeru Miyamoto was a producer on this film and knowing Nintendo, I’m pretty sure they kept a close eye with their IPs and had alot of say in the story. I believe Nintendo wanted to play it safe with this story so that it was familiar to both kids and us adults who grew up with Mario in the 80’s.
Exactly, part with Mario being clumsy and dorky at the beginning is done well, his getting use to the new world his in, and after he tries some of the powers he becomes better at it. Princes Peach is strong in this movie because she was rased in this world, and that is ok in games u could play her and use same powers as others.
SOME games she's playable. I'm with Joe though. Have her a damsel in THIS movie and be STRONG in the sequel.
That is what's wrong with Nintendo. Playing it safe. Sometime they go wild and that's what i like. The dual screen DS, the motion controller, rumble pak, and etc. It's all phenomenal.
The Switch is to keep it safe. Why? They cut back on many great apps and a boring theme screen (black and white).

I liked how the humor revolved around references to the video games. Like bananas making karts crash, the shrinking mushroom gag, Bowser crushing on Peach, etc. This was better than doing annoying pop culture references. Which is what Wreck it Ralph 2 did.
I’m 36 years old and for me it was the perfect movie to just sit there and watch it without my brain connected to my critic side.

Rare disagreement on my end with Joe. I loved every last second of the movie, I don't understand what you didn't like? Voice acting was great, great music, great animation and personally found it fairly funny. Plot was weak to below average, but it's Mario what do you expect. A really strong 9/10 close to 10/10 for me. But I respect all opinions.
If you compare Mario Movie to Despicable Me, Big Hero 6, Toy Story, Puss n Boots, Mitchells Versus Machines, Lego Movie and do many other great animated movies, the Mario Bros movie is aggressively mediocre. It was a huge disappointment when you compare it to the competition. The animation was fantastic. Hats off to that team. All in all, the movie had shallow, empty fan service. It was built on nostalgia and Easter Eggs.

Guess you don't play Mariokart huh. The joke is that in those games (well, the recent ones, 7 and 8) you can literally put any character in a stupid-looking kart and still win. Toad being fuckin tiny, riding something that would be best suited for someone like Bowser or even Wario was the fun part.

THATS why you enjoyed it. You are just pointing out references but a movie has to be more than references to be good. The writing and character moments are so straight forward and formulaic that even some children will be offended on how stupid the movie thinks you are.

Went with my brother (we are both adults) and both loved it. It was what we had hoped and expected, nothing more, nothing less, and I thought the movie had a lot of memorable creative scenes and input.

Yes. No one expected Mario movie to be a Citizen Kane or other master piece. It's a fucking video game character who's games' plots are paper thin. But the movie gave us all exactly what we should have expected and wore the Fandom on it's sleeve. And that's all I wanted.

The Super Mario Bros film was very shallow as it lacked any actual story or depth in it. It looked pretty but so did Minions. It's a 2/10 so hopefully Nintendo takes a lot more risks and adds more in the next one. I compare this film with the Michael Bay Transformers voice.
Alex explained it exactly how i felt.. i went with my two daughters and loved it... i had fun seeing it with them..

The scenes with bowser were the best bits imo.

Me and my seven year old son just came back from the movie and it was awesome, even I had a great time, laughed a lot, and it was really special to share this passion with him.

I actually liked the 1990s version as a kid growing up. Apparently the critics score is getting pounded. Critics are at 53 percent when it comes to overall reviews and Audience is around 96-98 percent in reviews when it comes to Rotten Tomatoes. 🤷🏼

It was disappointing because it makes no attempts (turns out intentionally) to be like the video games. But Street Fighter was significantly more disappointing.

I JUST saw this and while I don't think it's a 10/10, I had a smile throughout the whole movie. I loved the segments with Bowser romantically obsessed with peach which was kinda introduced in Odyssey

They tried to bank on nostalgia and I feel they got it good. It was a corporate film just for cash..but I as a 32 y/o enjoyed the film and my kids enjoying it so that to me is worth the time.
Honestly, the 90's Super Mario Bros. Movie has always been a guilty pleasure for me. It blew my mind when I saw it as a kid, and I still find it entertaining as an adult. It definitely falls into the category of "it's so bad it's good".

The movie was OK, the nostalgia factor was there, but it didn’t have much substance. I’ve heard the argument that Mario games haven’t had a good story, but it’s different when it’s a video game because the gameplay makes up for the lack of a story, but when you’re watching a movie and you’re not playing it, the story starts to matter more. I didn’t expect a intricate story, but some meat would have been great to flesh out the world. Overall solid, potential to be amazing with the next one.

I only say "almost" because there's a few I haven't sat through, but it's a known calling-card of theirs. I want this movie to do well because I don't want Nintendo to retreat into their shell for another 30 years, but I don't want Nintendo to take that success and sign a larger deal with Illumination because I don't think they should handle a Legend of Zelda, or Metroid, project.
Thank you. Not enough people are thinking like this. I theoretical want everybody to enjoy every movie they ever watched but the reality is filmmakers need to factor in the central part has always been story. Easter eggs and awe inspiring visuals are only a part.

That's because Mario Movie had many writing, storytelling and execution problems. It was a very weak movie. The animation quality was great, but everything else was mediocre.

@@DirtyDooney22 Princess Peach was a Warrior Princess. She was an incredibly skilled bad ass... and the hero of the movie. Mario was a bumbling idiot. There was no great interaction, dialogue or battles between Mario and Browser. And the use of power-ups was lame. Really, they did nothing with the fire flower? The creators didn't even use the statue defence ability of the Tanooki suit? Bowser wasn't a good villain or antagonist. He was very cringey. There was not believable backstory as to why or how Bowser fell in love with Princess Peach. And the song lyrics were terrible. Lol

I generally agree with your reviews. However this time I think the movie was great, I was entertained throughout the whole movie and felt like a child again while looking out for all those references. In the end I think in this type of movies what matters is that you had a good time, without really caring if the script is simple or silly. Specially in these times where all content have to convey an ideologized political message or nasty agendas. This movie feels like a breath of fresh air that just limit to give fans what they want, and is amazing at it.
Sonic has no political agenda and people praise it. It's a childish, blue, hairball hero who needs a parental guidance.

The story was okay but it's literally a Mario Bros movie i don't know what kind of storytelling these critics want 😂 they want Scorsese writing or something. In my humble opinion they did great the animation was great and the callbacks to the games were great to watch.
I also found they DID NOT CREDIT GRANT KIRKHOPE, for the DKRAP and that was a big mistake.

Peach grew up in the mushroom kingdom so that's why she was so skilled and I think donkey kong and mario constantly fighting is the writers paying homage to DK/Jumpman days.
They literally had a jump man arcade in Brooklyn too
Did the mushroom kingdom have a dojo with a karate master? Cause they threw away her whole character and replaced it with the generic strong and brave female lead that could do no wrong. Honestly tired of these jack of all trades characters, people wanted princess peach not wonder woman.

I admit, the story isn't the best, I half expected Peach to accept help from anyone who asked to join her on her journey to stop bowser... Even if bowser himself asked...
I did enjoy the film overall tho, kind of a switch your mind off type of film. The only times that kind of made me think we're the Easter eggs and when a moment was really dumb that my mind couldn't ignore it, like the fact that Peach just accepted help from Toad instantly almost without thinking about it.
I would've liked to have seen a bit more of Toad and Mario becoming friends before they reached the Mushroom Kingdom so that Mario could've convinced Peach that Toad would actually help on their journey

Sonic was not written better. There's a whole plot line in sonic 2 about a woman marrying an fbi agent or something. Also the first movie has the fastest creature alive going on a road trip in a pickup truck It's story is about as deep as mortal kombat annihilation

Sonic WAS written better because the characters in Sonic do have some actual depth to them. It's why Sonic has done well as a multimedia franchise in comparison to a traditional straight up video game franchise. The Mario characters are straight up simple, fun and colorful and they played that up in this movie and it works. The modern movies play up to the strengths of the each character and that's what I think attracts people to these movies in general. They are something different in comparison to all the other schlock being put out there. I appreciate Joe's opinion but I thoroughly enjoyed the movie as I did Sonic 1/2.
Yea. I found the Mario movie far superior to Sonic. Sonics not bad, but it had a lot more boring or cringe inducing parts.
