    For a movie called “The Super Mario Bros.”, it was strange to separate them for virtually the entire runtime, especially when they had such good chemistry. I’m all for making Peach a strong female protagonist who didn’t need saving, but not at the expense of Luigi, the most likable character with nothing to do but dangle in a cage.

    • @PonderingtheNonsense
      @PonderingtheNonsense Před rokem +2

      I agree. Luigi always gets undermined in the games, and yep, it happens in the movie, too. It's almost funny.
      As for Peach, I do think they gave her too much "moxy" when compared to the sweet, gentle nature she has in the games. She's really not a warrior--that's what the bros are for--but you wouldn't know that from this movie. The fact she even wields a halberd at one point is odd.

The whole plot devices they used were just visually like things in the Mario games but otherwise were not really representative of their video game counterpart. Case in point was the Karts. It's called Mario Kart...not Donkey Kong's Karting...we had that "Diddy Kong Racing." But a sticker book does not care about anything but a visual. Ultimately, I feel it was for sure not for old time fans but instead for those who buy their kids Mario stuff because they saw Mario in a Target.

      Illumination successfully catfished everyone, even better than Tinder and SW The Force Awakens, into fooling the general public into believing they've made a movie adaptation that's faithful to the source when in reality, it's the total opposite. That's what great marketing does for you.Terrible and deceptive movie adaptations that troll you with their art direction and marketing have always been Illuminations specialty. Just take a look at what the studio has done with Dr. Suess' stories. I checked out of the Mario movie hype train the moment it was announced Nintendo was collabing with Illumination, then my POV was solidified when the terrible voice casting was announced (in Illumination fashion).Thank you for your testimony. I'm happy I didn't waste my time with this movie. This is one of the few modern examples when the crirics were right, while the blind fans were downright wrong, though it's highly suspicious that despite the ragging of the film received by critics, none if them complained about Peach's new characterization in the movie. Though, to be fair, Peach has always been one of the most stigmatized and video-game characters out there... no matter where you go. She's always been dismissed and mocked (especially in adult parodies) for her Damsel in Distress princess status. Her stigmatized zeitgeist isn't _anything_ new. It's more so amplified now because of modern-day PC culture, but she was _always_ looked at as lame, saccharine, and earnest. Do you think your average gamer has ever cared for her? Of course *not.* Otherwise, Peach would've been a cool character to like with a huge fanboy cult when she clearly isn't. The average gamer always thought she was incredibly lame, uselss, and boring. You'd be made fun and mocked for liking her. Her entire rewrite in this movie is in direct response to *that* form of negative reputation she has: an attempt to make her look as cool, independent, tough, and sexy as possible. She's viewed as an old shame now, even by Nintendo.

    While lazy is one way to put it, I think "safe" might work better. Feels like the had a number of scenes (the obstacle course, the DK/Mario fight, the Rainbow Road scene, etc) in mind the wrote a very, very basic story that wrapped around it. My son loved it and I enjoyed it well enough despite not playing a Mario game since the N64. So I get why it's at 54% on RT because it really isn't a good moviie, but also get why the Audience Score is 95%.
    Only real disagreement is about how this movie will go away and be forgotten, I think it's the opposite, this movie will be on TV for 20 years as new Nintendo fans are born and age into. This will be a cash cow for Universal for years to come.

    I agree. The movie did have a lot of references to the games, but it was just that - references with no substance. It's the same thing people who hate family guy says family guy does with its jokes.
    Perfect example was during the donkey kong scene everyone is clapping for DK and then cranky kong says "silence!" and 1 person/monkey keeps clapping and cranky says "You too DIDDY KONG" and the camera pans to diddy and dixie kong. There's literally no point to that scene other than to say "look we put diddy kong in the movie, remember diddy kong? he's in this movie" but diddy kong never does anything and is never mentioned again. And the whole movie is basically that same joke or some variation over and over. Outside of those jokes, everything else is just exposition and "we have to go do thing" followed by them doing thing.
    I didn't really hate the movie since it's exactly what I expected from an animated children's movie about mario. I'll admit I did clap every time they did a thing from the games that I recognized, even if it was a bit on the nose, but objectively I think it's a bad movie.

      If you're someone who watches and talks about a lot of movies, it's very easy to tell when a movie is talking down to its audience, when a movie is cynically preoccupied with marketing and mass appeal, when a movie is ticking elements off of a check list as mandated by the corporate hierarchy. These movies are "lazy" in the sense that there is minimum effort being expended on the moviemaking part of the movie, because any attempts at personal sincerity or genuine dramatic flourish create points of foundational weakness that studios like Illumination are ill-equipped to repair.
      Movies like this can be entertaining commercials, they can be joyful celebrations of their source material, and certainly that isn't a bad thing to want from a movie, but of course it doesn't resonate with anybody obliged to devote more than a few sentences to them! But you do get that weird feeling that they are slowly drifting away from what it really is and who is it's real demographic. Not that it's entirely a bad thing. The movies are good, I've seen them despite their problems.
      The Super Mario Bros being full animation could give that message of them playing it safe. I went into this with minimal expectations which meant that I wasn't asking for much anyway since video game adaptation has a bad track record and I don't watch Illumination stuff. I watched it and because I played the games and I'm a fan, I had a fun time. It looks great, the mario inspired music is great and the voice acting is impressive. If you take away everything Mario related away from this movie and replace it with all new generic stuff. Then this really is a plain mediocre movie. It's not bad by all means but as a movie alone it's not very strong resulting it not good enough.
      Movies that are done to the most simplistic text book degree doesn't cut it anymore in this day of age. We expect so much more from movies like these since we get them every year. Even though the movie's humour is dry at least there is no fart jokes or Fortnite Flossing. Yes I hated Sonic movies for doing that.
      Overall we got to tamper our expectations and maybe do a bit of research. This is a video game movie about man rescue Princess from evil turtle monster and eats mushrooms. Yes they could've done more but that could also mean that Nintendo told them to not go too overboard with it and keep it simple.
      But hey everyone has opinion and has their needs and expectations. Im just saying we should be a little bit more careful with movies in today's world. In fact in my opinion, so many movies feel very identical nowaday anyway.

    The funniest part about the "woke" Peach argument is how much more of a badass she is in the actual lore then this movie, and how perthitic Mario is. In the first game she needs to be rescued, that's true. The second game in Japan continues that plot. But that's it. The Kingdom drastically changes after that ... Mario goes home, Peach (depending on what conclusions you want to draw from some questionable dialog and interviews) either marries or befriends Bowsers, the son of the villain in the1st game, forges a lasting peace, and then rebuilds both Kingdoms into a paradise.
    But what about all the times Bowser kidnaps her, you ask? None of it happens. It's all theater, put on for the benefit of a aging Mario who wants to constantly relive his glory days. The second game in the US is a dream, and from 3 onwards it's clear that the games represent a theater play, with stage style backgrounds and even starting and ending with curtains. They are Mario's war stories and everyone just goes along with it because he's Mario.
    Peach, in only a few years, took two waring Kingdoms and though the power of her leadership alone got to the point where they party and kart together and have founded multiple successful sports organizations, while Mario is still talking about how it scored the winning touchdown that one time in highschool
    The "paper" world is a different continuity, and that Peach is even MORE badass, constantly out-smarting everyone else, saving herself from harm, and rescuing Mario.
    If anything, this is the weakest Peach we have seen in 30 years.

      @li-limandragon9287 Před rokem

      This is a good kids movie tho, if anything the Last Wish comparisons are pushing at straws because A) Not every animated film needs to be exploring mortality and B) There’s weak stuff to Last Wish people wilfully ignore i.e the whole Goldilocks subplot.
      Kinda like people are assuming there’s no depth to this one when there clearly is with Luig’s arc.

  • @fortheloveofmusicandphilosophy

    They are truly hiding their terrible writing behind the "it's a kid's movie" excuse. Sure, a kid's movie that cost 100 million to make, is a huge IP that spans more than a single generation of people with a huge dedicated fan base that is largely adult. Like, what the hell were you thinking?

    • @mrshmuga9
      @mrshmuga9 Před rokem +5

      “Animation is not just for kids! And kid’s movies can have depth!”
      *5 seconds later*
      “It’s a _kid’s_ movie, you can’t expect much, it’s not meant for adults. But even still, I thought it was amazing!”
      These people are walking stereotypes. They want animation to be treated with respect. It is a style after all, not a genre. But most animated movies are for younger audiences and they’ll make any excuse for a crappy movie. Yes there’s bias, but no one treats it with respect because you make excuses for it all the time. There’s nothing wrong with _simple_ stories, but that doesn’t mean it can’t be done poorly.
      I don’t really trust critics, but they wonder why critics rate them low. “It’s because it was made for fans!” Well, you’re partially right. It wasn’t made for people that will excuse anything just because they recognize something. Also, I’d argue something isn’t really made for fans if they’re willing to change character’s personalities. Throwing in a bunch of references is hollow. It’s icing in the cake, but the cake still has to exist to be good. But these people only care about eating frosting all day.

      Yes, Mario should've had an in depth dramatic complex life changing story just like the games, I can't believe they made a Mario movie with a simple plot especially after the masterpiece stories of the games that have so much detail and deep writing, just look at Mario Bros Wii for example, that story changed my life and the writing of this movie will forever be a disgrace to the deep and in depth stories of Mario

      @@fortheloveofmusicandphilosophy honestly it seems like that song has become pretty popular since the release and really what should they have done? I would happily hear someone do a new version and see how much better of a song they could make, it's a simple song in a simple movie based off simple games, but if they did want a more artistic and more thought out song again I wouldn't object to hearing someone else's pitch for a song about a big turtle wanting to marry a princess of mushrooms, also no offense and I'm not one of those moronic people who say animation is for kids but it doesn't always have to be a masterpiece song

Im not gonna say you guys are saying that specifically but its a real problem with most negative reviews of the movie.

    The movie wasn't lazy, it was "safe" because Nintendo will not allow the foolish and fuckery that occurred in the past to occur again. To make the process collaborative and avoid issues of humor being lost in translation from English to Japanese, Illumination took the safe route. It is a bit harsh to call it lazy. It appealed to the target audience Nintendo, a new younger generation they can keep hooked for decades and it does the job in textbook fashion.

      @@ZephyrFate Nintendo is anything but lazy. This was playing it safe, checking boxes with straight forward humor that would make it pass Japanese executives that had been burned badly in the past by Western media partnerships. Kids love it, and Nintendo has hooked more generations for multiple decades if the box office returns are any indication. Because it didn't appeal to you and you do not like what they did, it doesn't mean it was lazy by any means... especially given the hurdles leaped to get this made.

Both kongs were awful seth rogan was just seth rogan and that does nothing for me, kranky kongs actor was also horribly miscassed and wasn't a fan of Jack black in this. my second was i think maybe they felt like this would be there only shot at another mario movie so they just slammed it with references every second which to me is why it felt so fast paced.

Because I can't honestly say it's more of the same when it comes to that movie. It's actually a rather intelligently written story for a children's movie that takes Puss out of his comfort zone and explores themes of existential crisis, failed relationships, self-worth and facing mortality.
    Also it's animated in the same style as Into the Spider-Verse which immediately sets it apart from and puts it above all of the other Shrek and Shrek adjacent films.

    There was so many things wrong with the writing of this movie .
    Peach being a perfect marie Sue who is the only one who can fight in the Mushroom kingdom (making you wonder how the Toads were doing before her and how their kingdom was still standing) always has the upper hand , is never vulnerable , can 1v1 bowser , hold on against his army all by herself for a very long time ;
    Mario who could get instant mastery over most power ups (cat suit , Tanuki suit) , but struggled with slightly higher jumps in the platforming Parcours of Peach , DESPITE being perfectly able to do it in Brooklyn (and being quite acrobatic) ;
    Peach backstory which was mentioned once and ONLY once and had not influence on the story in any way (it leads nowhere);
    Characters only having 30 seconds of characterization in the entire movie and surface level interaction (& Dynamic );
    DK complaining about his dad thinking he's a joke , despite the movie telling the opposite with Cranky giving defeate of his son as the price to get HIS ARMY ;
    DK complaining about being more than a guy who smashes things coming out of nowhere (he never showed any distain of smashing things and we never saw him doing anything except smashing things ) , leading nowhere , having no pay off and not being brought up again ;
    Luigi being able to do platforming at the end of the movie despite being really bad at it at the beginning of the movie and was never introduced to the concept of power up (he was in a cage for the 90% of the movie) ;
    Bowser and Mario having no interaction until the end of the movie ;
    Things just happening without being related to each other (a flood happend in Brooklyn , mario & Luigi tried to fix it and failed , they found the passage to another world , we don't know what happened, it apparently got resolved off screen , it's like if it never occurred )
    Obvious plot contradiction , such as the Penguins having the power star at the beginning of the movie , but not using it against Bowser , and we are never given the reason to why ; Bowser bothering everyone with the Power star when he had a literal tactical nuke at his disposal ;
    The power star serving no purpose until the end of the movie ;
    Mario & Luigi's family not questioning why there was a giant explosion , a giant castle Crashlanded in the middle of Brooklyn , Giant talking turtles and Gorilla and only cheering them "go defeat the big bad guys!" ;
    Instead of letting the nuke destroy the EMPTY and EVACUATED mushroom Kingdom , Mario decided to deviated it from ots initial trajectory , leading it not to the middle of sky , not to a body of water , but to its only way home , the nuke then didn't destroy the Pipe but got SWALLOWED by it (but Mario had no way to know this would happen) , got transported to the world between the world and decided to conveniently explode there instead of coming out of the outher side of the pipe in Brooklyn (because it can clearly choose when to do it otherwise it would have done it earlier when it was a fiew meters above the mushroom kingdom's castle or when it was a fiew meters away from mario) ;
    Mario being motivated to defeat Bowser at the end of the movie , not because his family is in danger , not because the guys he considers as friends are in danger , not because the city is in danger , but because of a freaking commercial at the pizza ria and because "hey , I'm a hero , I gotta do heroic things".
    This movie shows how little the audience will care about the quality of a movie as long as you throw in references of an IP they like and it shows how low the bar can be set for a video game adaptation.
