- With the release of The Super Mario Bros. Movie 2023 we've taken the time to go back and revist an absolute classic of th video game movie genre, Pixels from 2015. Despite having a stellar comedic cast, an excellent director and an intriguing premise it turned into the movie Pixels from 2015 which is unfortunate. Regardless, thanks for watching our Caravan Of Garbage review!

James just straight up calling all those characters "unfuckable losers" was incredibly refreshing.
Why do they have to write anyone that's into nerd culture like that in films and TV
@MasterIceyy I think a good example of "nerdy" character who isn't like that at all is Ben Wyatt from Parks & Rec.
That part from 6:54 onwards is gold, crying with laughter
@@mommas_boys Aw man, don't say that. I've heard he's a really nice guy in real life.
That would be a great quote the for the front of the dvd case. 😂
Clearly Peter Dinklage was in the midst of Game of Thrones boredom and was just like "I'm gonna go overboard with this and no one will stop me".
Adam Sandler asked "Yo wanna make a bunch of money fucking around for a couple months?" as he does to every single actor that he casts in his films. The exception being casting Katie Holmes in Jack and Jill to give her space to work on her escape from the cult of scientology and real-life-Patrick-Bateman Tom Cruise.
If they hadn’t included footage from the movie itself I would have been entirely unconvinced James and Maso hadn’t just made this entire thing up as they went.
One day they should just do that; invent a film and see how long it takes for us to catch on
i liked this movie it was great fun this is a poor excuse for an upload its looking for problems that didnt exist total nonsense tied together with clips from a movie its just nothing content
@benayers8622 oh yes, the film that includes numerous plotholes, god awful comedy that is on the level that a 6 year old would make up on the spot, generally awkward writing, and incredibly unlikeable characters is actually good.

I think the studio did most of the ruining and he was there for the paycheck
@@itayeldad3317 I think its a bit of both didn't he specifically push for an older cast because of his experiences working on Harry Potter? Which was a very odd choice.

I’m shocked the guys didn’t mention the insane waste of money that is getting a stunt double to do the moonwalk for literally no reason
Honestly, the screentime for a stunt double is almost certainly less than a big-name actor. It was probably a savings.
Because 1980!
Definitely the studio not trying to play around with insurance companies. Probably not a petty move done for no reason
@@PangolinMontanari actors don't get paid by the scene, they would have already paid for the actors
How is that a waste of money?
As someone who was in the Army:
In the military there is a ton of time where theres not much going on. In those times, most guys are playing video games. They all are better at video games than Adam Sandler and all his friends.
And militaries are using video games to train people. They're gonna be way better and way more capable than someone who didn't even peak at 14.
They're literally using video game-style footage to recruit on this website, so yeah it is absolutely absurd that the military would be ignorant of it. I mean, pretty sure it's one of those things the the department of defense helped fund at some point. Didn't they provide some funding for COD or something? Or was that an urban legend?
@@dragontears the cod franchise is funded by the military, and many higher ups at activison have also held high up positions in the military (and vice versa). but also: basically every american movie that features weaponry is funded by the military. the long and short of it is that *most* media is actually propaganda, but a very large percentage of people believe they’re too smart for propos to work (no one is too smart for propo btw, that’s not how it works) so calling something propaganda is often treated as a derogatory even if it is factually accurate.
@@zeywop not calling you out but what's you're source on many Activision employees holding high positions in the military(I'm not even sure how"vice versa" could be true lol)?
Basic training in 94 we had a SNES in the barracks with a Rifle Marksmanship "game." It used an actual M16 rigged up as a light gun.
Fun fact: they were originally going to have Josh Gad have sex with Smurfette instead of the other character, and on set he would constantly talk about his "seed" so the working title for this movie was called "Blue Harvest"

The same thing could be said for Adam Sandler, exactly the same thing.
I worked at a theater when this was out, and the number of people who came out demanding their money back was staggering. And they hadn’t even gotten to the Q-babies scene

I know that movie theaters see very little profit from tickets anyway, but demanding your money back from people that had absolutely nothing to do with the creation of the film is just bizarre.

Something in my gut tells me this was a Ben move.
My first job in the VFX industry was to work on this movie. We did part of the Centipede battle, and the Donkey Kong battle (which had a lot of it cut). It's the video game movie that feels like it was written by the high school jocks who would bully you for saying you liked to play video games.
Who are also now totally big fans of the things you liked then and are totally MASSIVE nerds, haha.
I feel like it's even worse. It's made by the kids who would follow the jocks around and help them bully the smart /nerdy kids, but were themselves neither smart nor sporty. Gross little dorks who survived school by being rude clowns and creeps.
Basically a movie made by Booger (Revenge of the Nerds) and Peter Pettigrew.
Did those jocks ever exist anywhere except '80s movies? Every jock I know has always played video games. It's only the bitter incels in Hollywood who insist on writing jocks that way. Paxton never played a President, I believe.
There's actually kind of a clever idea in that the aliens would take the games as a declaration of war or violence. One of the most common criticisms of video games is their depiction and glamorization of violence. The moral of the story and ultimate climax could have been humans getting the aliens to understand their true meaning and message, by getting the aliens to play the games themselves and having fun with them. Wouldn't that be a great way to end a film like this, something uplifting and heartwarming? Or it could end with Qbert babies, I guess. Sure.

The Lady Lisa character is very reminiscent of the NES game Athena, considered one of the 20 worst games ever released on the NES. Athena is unique in that it was not only the first licensed game to feature nudity on the cover and in the game, but also featured the first flying power up in a game, which was quickly copied into Super Mario 3, and has since become a staple of Mario games. Many earlier games had flying main characters, but those characters always fly as a base ability, and those games were coded around that style of gameplay. The reason such a power up hadn't been done at the time is that its completely game breaking, as most enemies are ground based, and easily bypassed with the power up, and a new gameplay style requires a lot of additional coding work, for something that is not a core feature of the game, and the player might not even use. The image of the Lady Lisa game in the movie is very similar to the title screen of Athena, as that game also features a pixilated close up of the main character winking at the player.
Additionally, the character of Athena in the original Japanese version of the NES game sported a red bikini, a spiked backpack, and blue hair. Athena's trademark blue hair is why the working title of the game during its development was Blue Harvest, which incidentally was also the working title for Star Wars Episode 6: Return of the Jedi.

The shot of Chris Pratt jumping over the counter when they mentioned Jumpman was an inspired choice
In a deleted scene, a military meeting was held to discuss the origins of the Pixels aka hardlight. NASA astronomers concluded that the aliens were harvesting B-type stars (which give off blue-white light) for the material needed to create their invading video game army. This led to the film's working title being "Blue Harvest", which coincidentally is also the original working title for "Star Wars" in 1977.
The Billy Mitchell jabs the movie did are hilarious
Ackchyually Peter Dinklage's character is a clear knock at Billy Mitchell (15:58) who famously did cheat at Donkey Kong by playing on a modified arcade machine (which was prohibited under the Twin Galaxies' Donkey Kong rules) that instead of having the original four-way black joystick had a red, possibly eight-way joystick that would of given him a unfair advantage. Also he is a very bad person who has a habit of suing anyone who speak ill of him in anyway, a notable case being the cartoon Regular Show that features a big head parody.

Here's a bit of Green Trivia:
One year after this movie, the Kamen Rider Heisei Generations movie was released, which also had a scene in which the heroes fight an evil live-action Pac Man.
The main difference being that Pac Man is actually part of the main plot and not just one scene, and that movie is actually really good
Using Pac-Man as a villain in a crossover movie between the new, video game-themed protagonist and the previous, ghost-theme protagonist was perfect.
Oh yeah, that movie with Tenkuji Takeru. It's always cool to see another kamen ride fan in places you dont expect to see other kamen rider fans.
So fun story: I actually knew someone who hated modern games because to him they were all “too easy” and he said “back when I was a kid games were actually challenging”. We never saw the eye to eye because I always said games like the assassins creed and god of war games can be challenging but he said that they are way too simple (no it was not a bit he did)
He does have a point. While modern games are technically more challenging with modern controllers(the amount of buttons, learning combos and systems of play) older games were more challenging with limited lives, no checkpoints, very limited saves(or no saves) games like contra, ghost n goblins, or even the original Mario games are more challenging than God of War or other modern games that essentially have infinite lives and no game overs. You can brute force your way through modern games(die at the boss? Just start over right at the boss fight) without players having to become almost experts in game play and enemy patterns. Old games you manage to make it to the last boss and you die then restart that whole level, get a gameover and you have to restart the whole game. To get through old games you basically had to have a modern speed runners mindset of learning attack patterns, optimal routes/strategies, different rng stuff as lots of games didn't always have the enemies pop in at the same time every time, and if the game gave you a password to get back to a certain level it was left to the player to write it down it wasn't automatic. Alot of Modern gamers would flip their shit if modern games were like that, imagine the arkham games were the I am the knight mode was the only mode, you die and restart the game or even a soul reaver where you die and while your progress isn't technically lost you restart at the beginning of the game.
Tldr: modern games are technically more challenging, retro games were challenging in a completely different way

Considering this movie is from 2015 and Steven Universe began as a pitch by Rebecca Sugar in 2011 with the show then airing in 2013, I'd say that's sufficient evidence.
My brother in Christ, what are you TALKING ABOUT!?
??? Wasn't Steven's arc that he fell in love with his childhood best friend Connie who is a human and he is also part human and part gem/alien, and she eventually started seeing him romantically as well? And wasn't Josh Gad's romantic arc that he fucked a made-up video game character because he thought she was hot and they had Q*Bert babies?
I mean, I guess the childhood crush aspect is the closest connection I can think of, unless the point is that Josh Gad kind of looks like a grown-up version of Steven Universe??? I'm honestly lost here.
This film had targetted ads where Sandler said ‘hey Yogscast fans’ in the intro and nothing has ever turned me off a movie quicker than that
This movie has PAC-Man, Galaga, Space Invaders, Donkey Kong, Centipede, Mario, Q-Bert, Duck Hunt, & a reference to Luigi the Plumber. Somehow, against all odds, Adam Sandler & co. set Video Game Movies back by about 64 years.
4:20 I don't think you guys accounted for what editors can now do with the audio of you saying the word "snigger"
I found this quite entertaining. I was young in the 80s, and for me this was so much nostalgia! I think, this movie is about these kids, who were real good at video games in their youth, but they were good at nothing else and here is a situation, where the only thing they were good at makes them heroes. I think a lot of 80s kids deam about something like this. The only complaint I have is the sexism. And I absolutely know that it happens a lot that a guy turns against you when you don't want to kiss him. Happened to me a few times. This is just the kind of loser he is, that he does not have the self confidence to accept a no.
I love the Rodney bit.
4:21 EXCUSE ME?! WHAT DID HE SAY?!?!
I legit remember seeing this as a kid and even then thinking it was stupid, Q*bert and Josh Gad did the deed and had Q*bert babies!
One of the most fun game movies, what a riot
