Driving On WA I-405 North In 1995 (Tukwila, Renton, Bellevue, Kirkland, Bothell, Lynnwood)

Back in 1995, The Washington State Department of Transportation drove North on WA I-405 and recorded video to document the highway. This was part of a project that photographed/videotaped the states highways every couple of years. This video now resides at The Washington State Archives who were kind enough to share it.

Ahh, the old carpool lane on the right side of the road. I forgot this dynamic feature of the old 405! Certainly a beacon of excellent planning by the ever efficient WSDOT!

To be fair, it may have been feasible at the time. However, I believe that the population of King County increased dramatically in the interval between 1994-5 and 2002, which is when the HOV lanes were fully migrated over.

I stayed in Bellevue in 1996 when I visited to watch a Huskies game, and remember it like this. I came back to Seattle many times after that, but never crossed the lake. When I moved to Redmond in 2020, I got a huge shock when I saw, for the first time, how many more high-rise buildings there were in the Bellevue skyline.

Tukwila was Nintendo of America's real estate man Mario Segale's (1934-2018) hometown. It was him who the character Mario was named for.
