Electric Wizard’s two best albums featured pretty “unimpressive” equipment. Just goes to show it’s not about the most expensive instruments, amps, and pedals - it’s the riffs and songs that are key.
Well that but even more importantly with electric wizard, imho: style and attitude in sound and playing, working together.
It's just like with all that black metal on ultra cheap equipment: atmosphere and creativity in sound as well as in song.
While I greatly enjoy learning so much about sound from CZcams vids and I love all the small pedal brands, I'm kinda afraid that the oversaturation of the market and over-availability of both information and equipment will hinder many potentially great artists in finding their own voice rather than help.
It's the riffs and their execution indeed
Jimi Hendrix already proved that point, he used a cheap frankenstrat a big part of his career
Bagshaw used a black Rickenbacker on Dopethrone. Those cost at least $1,500 used, probably a lot more in the UK due to import duties and fees, as well as VAT.
@@MarcAndreLevesque u mean Van Halen?
A Dunwich lesson would be great!
Getting a lot of votes!
I cant believe I was listening to an Epiphone all these years and not a Stihl MS 250. I guess you can never be sure.
😂😂 right???
Probably not going to be the most mentioned but Id still like to suggest Mountains of Mars. Its so different than their usual stuff, while still being very much EW and has such a sweet psychedelic vibe
Awesome song
The Chosen Few, Time To Die, Incense For The Damned, Wizard in Black, Return Trip, Black Mass, but really...all of the above. Going to see them in Atlanta next month for the first time and so thrilled. Keep up the good work man!
Lots of good stuff on that list! Enjoy the Atlanta show!
1:56 this riff is so legendary
Yes!
What song is it?
The melvins experimented with doom, actually got me into it lol
A couple years ago, I bought an Epiphone g400 pro (66 reissue), and it's a killer guitar. I had the money to buy a Gibson standard SG, and was set on getting it, but after playing on all the guitars, liked the Epi better, and made a deal on it for $224.00 out the door. I get a really good Doom tone it when I use a Proco Rat Pedal, or a Big Bass Muff by Electro Harmonix. By the way, great video, and I love Electric Wizard.
Very cool! It will doom indeed!
I really think the uncovered bridge pick up really makes a huge difference. Can't really explain why but always noticed a difference.
Great demo of this guitar Steve! Thanks for another great video man 🦇
Thanks buddy!!
That “I, The Witchfinder” riff was so badass 💯🔥
Glad you nailed that filthy tone brother~!
Keep them coming,
Greets from Portugal!
Thanks so much man!
stop staring directly into my eyes
👀👀
you could do an extended version of the hills have eyes, it would be really cool to see how you add your own things to that instrumental
Could be cool!
Just picked up a 1997 MIK model in great shape with case for $340 shipped. Hell yeah!
Please do more lessons for Let Us Prey, the wizard's most underrated album in my opinion. Outside of Electric Wizard, I'd like to see maybe some cleaner tone stuff, like late era Earth songs. Dylan Carlson is a wonderful musician. Thanks for the awesome content!
All great suggestions. Thanks for watching!
Priestess of Mars lesson! One of the most underrrated songs!
Your channel kicks Ass Man !!!!!Awsome😎😷
Thanks so much!
Please do some Reverend Bizzare , absolute DOOM monsters :P
I got ya!
Thanks a lot I really appreciate your guidance and hard work
I am so glad you dig it! Thanks so much.
These Epiphones are getting sicker and sicker!
I've always wanted an SG but Gibson as a company...well you know.
I'm one of those guys who makes many decisions based on principle.
Epiphone as usual is bringing it's A game instead of invoking a dead man's name to make sales.
Sharp guitars! Good content maaaan!
Thanks so much man. The 2020 Epiphone line up looks awesome!
Awesome work. You rule Steve 🤘🤘🤘🤘🤘
Thanks Luke!
I had no idea Jus used one of those, that's the exact same guitar I have! So fucking cool!
My first electric guitar is a 1998 Epiphone G-400 Pro. I've used it on & off throughout the years. I just got it set up in Drop C recently & it's been playing amazing! Rock on! 💚👍🎸🎶
Awesome guitar!
Return Trip
Need to do that one!
Nice witchcraft T-shirt! Almost baught an 89 open book sg the other month!!! Definitely would have bid more if I knew who had been playing the same model xD iv got the 89 Epi Les Paul standard with the open book! Completely modded... It’s in desperate need of a refret atm though man poor effort on my part probably should have spent the Fz-2 money on that haha! Got a 2005 g400 n the older ones definitely play n feel much nicer than the newer ones. Those flat poles are super slick, won’t let the next one get away from me!!! Great video again man :D
Those first three Witchcraft albums are some of my favorites! I don't blame you for getting the FZ-2!!
Love your channel
Thanks so much brother.
Well done!
Thanks for watching!
I've got a black Les Paul Custom three pickup version of the G-400 with vintage LP custom pickups and its hands down the best guitar I've ever owned.
FoolOnThePlanet sounds awesome! What year?
@@DoesItDoom 2007 I believe, its one of the last years they did the ebony finish and its made in Korea.
FoolOnThePlanet very cool!
I’d love for you to make a lesson for Black Mass by Electric Wizard!
Great tune. Great suggestion!
Thanks! I’d also love to see a Melvins guitar lesson, there doesn’t seem to be that many of those on YT.
@@DoesItDoom Needs more Black Mass
Thanks for sharing those infos, but i'm pretty shure that with this amount of fuzz any downtuned humbucker guitar would've done the job. Also till this day i thought his name were Jus Osborn. Mindblowing!
LOOOOOVE ELCTRIC WIZARD!!!! Dopethrone changed my Life FOREVER!!!! Good atuff, my Dude. Always enjoyable!!;)
Thanks as always brother!
As always, great video Steve!!! I’m using a late 90’s Epiphone SG Junior model. I’m not that good a guitar player that 2 pickups help me much. 😂 Would be cool to see a demo of that, although mine isn’t stock.
Thanks for watching, Chris!
can we see a lesson of Return Trip..i don't even own a guitar . haha
Likely so! I’m always interested to see non guitarist watching the videos!
Definitely return trip man! Need to hear it through Steve’s sick amps!!
@@DoesItDoom Indeed you prefer non guitarists watching the videos! Helping guitarists play songs is awesome, but having a non guitarist pick up an instrument due to your videos? That's something to be proud of brother! Keep up the great work!
Jon certainly a very rewarding aspect brother! Thanks for the kind words.
I had a 93 G310B so also a MIK and I gotta say I've never seen anybody talk about the pickups that guitar had. Very much like a Samick Super Strat pickup with 2 adjustments on the bass side and one on the treble. Kinda wish I kept it now. Coolest Epiphone logo on those headstocks.
I actually had to go back and compare the logos, but you are definitely right! Cooler logo back then for sure.
@@DoesItDoom MOP inlays. MIK era over everything since.
I grew up about 10 minutes from where Electric Wizard are from. Robert Fripp is from there too and he claims it is the centre of the universe!
Awesome!
how about a sludge video where you explain how its a combo of hardcore punk and doom metal. Like a guitar tutorial with a history lesson showing how the two best genres made the greatest combo to mankind.
Cool idea for sure!
Epiphone SGs are great. Just upgraded to an Epiphone SG Standard in Gold and it sounds wonderful!
Awesome!
ohhh Amazing Electric Wizard !!!
Damn that sounds dope
I bought one of these today ! It needs a little TLC, but I'm sooooo stoked! Mine is the 89 model 🖤
Nice! Open book headstock version, right?
@@DoesItDoom yes! And its 100% unfucked with 🤘 got it for $200 from my local pawn shop
I used to have this exact guitar…it was the first electric guitar I bought myself in the 90s (couldn’t afford a Gibson at the time). Unfortunately I hawked it in the more desperate days of my active addiction…glad those days are gone, I’m clean now, and I can actually afford better quality equipment. That said, for the money I paid for it ($200 or $300, if I remember right) it was a nice guitar that sounded pretty darn good if you prefer the humbucker sound (which I of course do). Just goes to show it really is more about the player than the equipment, although good equipment is of course great to have.
Absolute monster guitar
I was checking the tuning guide and was curious if you were working on a tuning guide for bass?
That my main guitar in my thrash band. Got if for $100. Shred worthy and never really had to set it up. It's fantastic.
$100?! That’s awesome!!!
@@DoesItDoom I told the guy "I can only give you 100 for it but I promise you'll here it in a metal album one day"
That sounds sick
⚡️🧙🏻♂️🤘🏻
Sweet guitar man, how about Flower of Evil for the next Electric Wizard lesson.
Less requested but maybe at some point!
Flower Of Evil AKA Malifore would be amazing!
Got it! Thanks!
Is there a YOB lesson in the making?
Maybe. YOB is tough!
That would be rad. Mike is such a unique and awesome guitarist.
Yes YOB riffs🤘
That was great dude! Thanks for mixing up the gear for us regular joes, hey any neck dive on those g400?
Glad you liked it man! It really depends on the guitar and the relative weight between the neck and the body. This one is well balanced.
@@DoesItDoom You the man!
It helps to lengthen your strap so you can balance your sg to stay. It makes a huge difference.
I've got 2 a neck dive is non existent. Often this criticism is from people who read and repeat.
@@greenfly1264 that's wussup! I ended up getting a 2019 sg tribute and it dive bombs like a mf
So fucking sick man! Are there any tour dates near you man? Just saw their coming stateside.
They are coming to Atlanta, but that’s too far for me to make it.
Great vid, yo! Lookin sharp. Love my Epi SG. Voting Witchcult Today or Chosen Few. I play bass and am finally learning to solo on guitar. Any chance at a doom solo tutorial in ze future?
Rastas Bohanan thanks man! Here is a really old video on that topic. Sorry about the quality, but the content is good. czcams.com/video/Z6ibptXhsrQ/video.html
Awesome!!! Thank you, sir!!!
I love the Eyehategod t-shirt!
Classic album! Grabbed that one at a show.
Sickness 😈🤘🏽
Thanks for watching!!!
Holy shit that sound
The Korean Epiphones are great. I have a Korean double cut Les Paul with dual p90s and a buddy has a Korean LP custom and they're both great value for the money.
Just orderd one of those chibsons with 3 hum buckets and tony iommi inlays it’ll be to see how much noise I can make
I've just bought 1995 Epi G-400 on Reverb. I have a couple of Gibson SG but I happen to like the G-400 the most. I mean it stay tunes better and best lookin.
Will you do a video lesson of something off the We Live album? love that album but it seems to be under appreciated compared to Dopethrone and Come My Fanatics
Perhaps! What song?
Does It Doom? Another Perfect Day or Eko Eko Azarak
Flower of Evil!
Charles LeeFox wytchmagick agrees to another perfect day, (and please look into the band Witchfinder)
I, the Witchfinder...one of my favs
Classic. 🧙🏻♂️
Master of Alchemy!
I know this comment is way behind...But I finally got a 1995 G400 off of ebay surprisingly it is in great condition and came with a hardcase Its definitely one of my favorite guitars so far
Witchcult Today, Torquemada 71, Son of Nothingness, Return Trip, Wizard in Black, Doomantia
Great list!
Get to see EW boys finally for their first ever trip to FL next Friday. Beyond stoked.
Fuck yeah!!
Correction lads and lass
Finally got my super fuzz as well.
I just got a japanese burny SG. Any recommendations on pickups and pot/cap values for doom?
You should do a cover of madness for an architect by high on fire!!
Wizard In Black! 🤘🏻
For sure!
THAT Song owns the tar pits and pockmarked landscape of Doommantia
MASTER OF ALCHEMY
🧙🏻♂️🔮🐐
Any advice on pickups for a better doom tone?
I would love to know your opinion on how it feels compaired to it's big brother? I have had epiphone les Paul's and they have been great but they feel different then the big brother. But I have had other brands that compete with the big brother all day. Anyways my next guitar will be an sg. Just didnt know if I should find an older one like this, a newer one, go for the big brother, or even get off brand like orville/ltd
Johnathan Jerusik It’s pretty tough to generalize but if I was getting a “big brother” in the range of an SG Special I’d look for something from the 90’s. If you’re going Standard/Custom shop then something more recent will be nice as well. The Epiphones are great guitars, but they are definitely inferior to a nice Gibson in most instances. Again, it’s just tough to generalize as every guitar is different.
@@DoesItDoom I 100000% agree! Just as an example I have my les paul custom. I love it, it's my number1, but my ec1000vb feels very close. In both quality and playbilty. Even the BK600 feels very close to most 70s era les Paul's (makes sense that's what bill mostly plays). So I just didnt know if you felt it would be worth the extra bit and get the big brother (gibson)
Johnathan Jerusik just depends on your budget. If I was look for a Gibson USA model I’d be shopping used Standards from the 90’s. Can be had for about $750 and the quality and tone woods are great. My only hang up is the batwing guard and the shallow bevel carves. The 2013 SG Standards have a really great look, and I would shop those as well.
Both my Indonesian Squier HH tele custom and my Dean Stealth V w EMGs sound killer tuned to C with Ernie Ball not evens through Big Muff OG or Raijin into Crate 2x12 clean channel. Have the Little Bear RAT clone and the Behringer super fuzz ordered.. Looking at you and playing 5 OG Sabbath discs on random mode right now. Iommi rules
Do you rate the JamMate UG-1? Got one for £10.50 on eBay with tiny practise amp.Was only intending to sell it on - as I don't (as yet) play guitar - but,may keep it to learn on.All of Come My Fanatics.Love this band second only to early Sabbath.Great channel.
Thanks, Richard. I’m not really familiar with the UG-1 at all. You should definitely get yourself a guitar and give it a try!
Does It Doom? Haha - guessed that would be the case. Will look around for something, possibly the guitar under discussion in this video. Thanks from a new subscriber
Return trip!
That one will happen!
I want Watching From a Distance from Warning
That tone is SO MEAN!!! Which/what pedals are you using?
Mostly just a Behringer SF300 superfuzz.
I have a Made in Korea G-400 from 2005 and it feels nicer than some cheaper Gibson USA SGs I've played. Really good guitars. Can't speak for Epiphones made in other factories though.
That’s my experience with these things. If you’re looking in the lower end range of Gibsons you will often find a better guitar at a cheaper price going with Epiphone.
*We Live* is the greatest Electric Wizard song. dont argue FIGHT ME
Do a lesson of dunwich!!!
Getting all the requests!
Hail Steve! Wizard Master loves your channel! Vintage VS 6 SG.. What do you think about this guit? Thanx!
Never played one but looks cool!
Does It Doom? Thank you for your reply! The Great and Powerful Wizard Master appreciates that!
people obsess about brands, and blindly throw money at them.
most times you can spend much, much less and get the same to better results.
it upsets me a lot! because not thinking for one-selves is big part of what is wrong with the world
yea. We live in a world where a Behringer pedal is getting scalped because of it. That's the point where things are too far.
I know man! I got an SX Callisto, a Les Paul copy. It came with pretty much no setup, and the neck pickup was wired wrong. But once I fixed it, it sounds and plays AMAZING. Like, Better than my Epiphone Les Paul Custom. Going through my OR15 with a Bug Muff, Tubescreamer, and DS1, I can get pretty much the exact tone from Dooesmoker. All from a $188 guitar.
@@RoachDoggJr2112 yes!! Thats what im talking about, DIY spirit, the spirit of stoner rock itself imo.. i myself have an epi SG special, which i completely rewired, replaced all electronics and loaded it with a set of Dirty Heshers, push pull for split coil and phase reversal, some other stuff. I run it into a Jet City Custom 22 and i dont even need fuzz pedals anymore
Interesting in that Iommi used a hot P90 SG special for all the classic Sabbath albums.
Right? 🤘🏻
how about Stone Magnet?
Literally all of Dopethrone. We Hate You... Thats my personal fav I think.
We're getting close. Need to do We Hate You.
I dig Epiphone guitars. That one had some serious time in it!
Absolutely! I have three Epi SG's right now, and they are all great.
Does It Doom? I am Still on the hunt for a proper used epi sg from my local pawn shops for downtuning.
Venus in Furs next pls
Return trip or supercoven. Shit, burnout would be pretty sweet too.
All great!!
Do you think you could do a guitar lesson on the song Doom Mantia?
Drop it on the request list up in the description.
Steve what colors did this guitar come in??
I want to say red and black but I haven’t seen many in black.
Electric wizard dunwich would be great
The G Man Gabe great tune for sure. Thanks!
@@DoesItDoom Second vote for that. Maybe something else off the record, like Torquemada 71 too? I know you did Drugula already, but still.
Im also going to jump behind this suggestion
Me as well...
Any self titled or Firewood Witchcraft would be fucking siiiick
I’m never sure how many people love that band as much as I do. But suffice to say, their first three records are some of my favorite records of all time.
Does It Doom? I saw the t shirt and had to say something. An old band I was in used to cover The Snake and Queen of Bees 🤘🏼
What tuning were you inn when making this vid? when you kick on the fuzz or dist pedal it becomes a massive tonal earthquake!
B-Standard and Bb-Standard. All of the demo sections came from song lessons on the channel.
@@DoesItDoom Oh, thanks!
Could you do a lesson by Mammoth Storm - Fornjot
I’m up for anything that gets enough requests. Thanks for watching.
Not sure but I have heard he uses a Boss FZ-2 Hyper Fuzz and also a Ibanez Standard Fuzz.
He has used a Boss Hyperfuzz forever. Early on he used it in the fuzz 2 setting but has switched over to the boost mode for many years now. Other than that he typically has a tuner and s way when playing live. Thanks for watching!
How do you make this sound?
What's pedals? amps?
The main tone source is an FZ-2 Hyperfuzz stlyle pedal. For I, The Witchfinder I was using a Fuzzlord Effects FU-2, for Dopethrone and Barbarian I was using a Behringer SF-300. All three pedals sound very similar. The amp was just an Orange Crush 20 on the clean channel.
I have a 94 I found for super cheap. I rate it better than my Gibson 61 reissue.
Score!!!!
How about Dunwich from Witchcult Today?
Great tune!
Man weird tales is a really groovy song can you do a lesson?
Definitely on the list!
Finally someone who plays Barbarian correctly
⚔️⚔️
Bass player here who is thinking about picking up guitar. Epiphone SG or Les Paul is what I'm looking at.
Always a good choice when starting out.
What hat is this? Where can i get one?
I make them from time to time. Not sure when the next batch will be but if you sub to the channel and follow on IG / FB you’ll catch the announcements!
