@@TheAxzom agreed. SG specials are the definitive rock guitar for me. Townsend, Iommi and Santana all had their best tone with p90 loaded SGs. Carlos played LP specials some too which are also fantastic. And Clapton was never the same after he started using Strats. I love a lot of his post Cream work but he was a monster with a Les Paul, 335, SG or Firebird.

I like both Les Pauls and SGs. Spent most of my time playing an SG so that feels like home, the slightly darker tones and the higher fret access definitely influenced my play style. But the Les Pauls have a bit more snap and definition and a great classic look and feel. Can’t go wrong with either one! Love the content Jason, keep it up! Watching from Vancouver, WA 👍đŸŒČ

wanted to comment something like this but no point commenting the same thing again. love my sg but so hard not to say the les paul... btw, i have a "vintage" brand sg, made in china, but such fantastic quality feel to it... and plays nice as well. the great thing about it is it has a slightly offset body, like an esp viper, which looks a little worse but while playing you can barely tell because of the way the guitar is slanted on your body, but totally fixes any neck-dive issue (especially when you have a little wider strap, like a bass strap. at the same time, it has the 2-volume 2-tone setup, unlike esps. so to me, best of both worlds.

    Here from Australia
Becoming a massive SG fan. Players like Jus, Buzzo and Iommi have really gotten me into SG's for the Doom aspect but seriously adore what versatility you can get out of them in general. Everyone from Zappa, Santana, Robby Krieger, Chino Moreno and Angus Young... really digging the idea of getting one as of late just from the array of sounds you get from that lineup of musicians using them right there!
Currently got an LTD Sparrowhawk and loving, both, the precision and dissonance that thing can provide when trying to attain either of those sorts of tones but thinking something with a smoother and wider "vocabulary" if that makes sense... and I'm vibing the SG.
Also open to anyone who may have some helpful tips for me too. Cheers!

I miss my SG i am a recovering heroin addict who is trying to save for another SG not easy in CA economy but i regret so fuckn much getting rid of my marshalls, jacksons, and SG with a host of effect pedals for measly amounts of dough some of my biggest regrets as 4 years sober but not much closer on being able to afford those again. I appreciate your channel showcasing a wide range of different priced gear i might have to downgrade to an epiphone but i was going toss in zombie dusters with a p-90 in the neck in my SG before it was sold years ago in desperation would have been tits. It's a bit daunting trying to rebuild some of my collection i use to have but know in no way am i going back to that lifestyle so i know that the extra money i make goes to other things then my arm now, but its just damn hard to accumulate again, but so glad that there are large networks of used and new gear and a host of DIY stuff out there with a ton of info even on youtube i might just build up my perfect doom guitar from scratch or a kit if i continue to struggle to save up for a new or vintage SG, I'd take a standard in a moment could be the most basic as i switch up humbuckers and pickups frequently anyway with hardware changes. Lately been researching a lot more DIY as i really want to build a custom resin epoxy sg some gnarly lace pickups maybe the dragonauts and a kahler tremelo. Here's a good example of a gnarly resin guitar dude even made a guitar out of concrete now that's some heavy shit lol czcams.com/video/o8sRAclqoBg/video.html do that to a SG and that shit will look satanic.

Epiphone SG was my second guitar. Loved it. Neck diving was rarely a issue. Easy to play 30 minute sets with a few jumps in the air and not skipping a beat. Real problem, it was too sweet and stolen out of my studio. That's when I found "the Paul" by Gibson. Lighter weight with same heavy mahogany sound of a Les Paul. Lighter on the wallet too. The Con: that damn pickup switch above the strings. I would use it as a killswitch between songs but most of the time it was accidentally hit while playing live. Not a good spot for aggressive players.
Great Doom guitar not typically talked about:
Jazzmaster HH. Larger neck scale, beefy Alder body, switch is out of my strum path, and you don't have to buy a dozen solo G strings.

A great solution to the G string SG thing is to take the string backwards through the tailpiece, and wrap it overtop the bridge. Stops that whole issue of tuning stability. A trick I learned from a number of pros. I’m from West Virginia btw. Love your channel! So much valuable info to pass on to younger guitarist, and even teach a thing or two to some vets. I learn new things everyday. I love your pedals. Wanted to purchase one, but sadly they are sold out. Love that ProCo Rat Clone!!! Awesome pedal, as well as the FU-2! I play an SG, and you wouldn’t believe how good it is if I told you the brand. Do you remember when Gibson put out the Maestro SG’s. I got one for ten dollars. Dude I swear after modding a couple things that guitar is sick! I’ve had legit Gibson SG’s before that didn’t sound as filthy as one of those do. It’s seriously a sleeper of a budget guitar. Yea it sounds crazy! Just check one out sometime. They kinda have a cult fan base now. Some are selling for well over a 100$-200$ on reverb. Excellent modding platform with correct Gibson style headstock. The LP junior version is infamous now as well.

Old video but I still want to answer the question. When I bought my SG in 2012, I went to the store with 600 bucks that I got from my parents for my birthday as advance for Christmas and all the other holidays you get some money. So I went into the store to buy an Epiphone LES PAUL with EMGs. That were my requirements. LP shape and active EMGs. Of course they didn't have the guitar I wanted in stock. I kept looking around and saw the Epiphone SG Custom Prophecy EX with EMG 81 and 85. I thought well I give it a try. I hooked it up to a Marshall halfstack and I was blown away. I immediately liked how the guitar felt in my hands, with a very thin neck, 24 frets and easy access up to the 20th fret! and the EMGs... I loved it! Now this guitar has been my main guitar since then, it can play everything from metalcore, punk, death metal up to classic sabbath, kyuss and stoner, doom what ever. Never regereted getting this guitar. SGs rule!

@@FuzzlordEffects Yeah and I love it, I even did some mods to it over the years. As I wanted a pickup change I just took the EMGs with the electronics out and put in the passive PAF-style pickups with the electronics from one of my other guitars (LP copy) into the SG. It sounded okay but soon I wanted the EMGs back so I bought the EMG 57 for the bridge, which is solderless (to spare me the hassle) and has passive PAF qualities, and left the neck empty ever since. But now I grew tired of the neck slot being empty and I will finally get the EMG 66 for neck to make it complete again haha. This was also one of the last models to be an Epiphone made in Korea. And the build quality is really high.

Hey Fuzzlord! The first guitar I ever owned was an Epiphone Les Paul in cherry sunburst when I was 15, my buddy from school had an SG and I got to try it, mind was totally blown! Was way lighter and a bit brighter in tone. All in all it was more of my jam than I thought it would be. I went into some sort of existential crisis and started playing hollow bodies and thin ibanez, fender, esp guitars. Fast forward 16 years since I got the les paul. I Sold it for the price I bought it new and have no desire for another one. I find them to be the most beautiful guitars ever. Sadly we never really got along too well. My favorite player from around the time I bought my first guitar was Christopher Johnson from Therion. I realize now that different strokes for different folks is really a thing when it comes to guitars and if something works incredibly well for somebody else, it won't always be the case for you. The best advice I can give is to try out many kinds of guitars. You can play metal on a gretsch & country on a Dean Razorback, whatever works is best. Watching from tokyo japan, love your channel since you got me into building pedals. Keep on creating! Peace & love.

Greetings from KC Missouri! Two guitarists that I love and made me love Gibson! First the grandfather of doom, Mr Iommi and his SG and secondly not known as a doom metal player but a genius on the strings, Mr Page with his Les Paul. Funny thing is before I owned a Gibson and truly played them (being left handed is a curse). I loved the Les Paul. With that said, now since i own both I prefer the SG its more user friendly for my style and the sounds are deadlier in my opinion! I mean just listen to the end of your video! When you play that SG mind blown! Great video and I am a new subscriber!

Recently went out and treated myself on the relative cheap. Drove to Chicago for Bongzilla, bought some Boris and a Japanese copy of Sabbath live from Asbury park. Then picked up an old Epi SG standard in Cream for 120, then the other day a used Orange Crush 12 practice amp for 50. Primarily a bass player so its still something to try and learn, don't think I'll be riffing on my band's songs but maybe help in the demoing process

I really like the way that les paul's look, and that unique sound of them, but when i'm going to play for 2, or 3hrs in a row, I always choose my SG. It feels a lot better on your back, and has that unique "punchy" sound.

What's up, Mike out of Memphis here. Weekly question wise: I had a 2010 gibson SG faded, but have never had a LP. The SG was awesome, great guitars & the faded series ring out loud like a bell. I sold it & ended up getting a deal on a black 2000 gibson es-335. The 335 is heavy (like LP weight) but I prefer that- it makes it feel substantial. Tone wise, it's very close to a LP & sustains for days. Handles gain crazy good. I do miss the SG though.
Good call on the P90. I replaced the humbuckers in the SG with a set of SD Phat Cats. Tried those for a while & then settled on a set of BG Pure90s. Highly recommend BG Pickups.

I think it's kind of a shame they don't make them anymore. They were a real nice bang for your buck.
I keep it tuned in Drop-B with either Ernie Ball Cobalts or D'Addario NYXLs for tonal clarity.

However, I dislike short scale length as someone who always tunes down to D-standard or down/up a half step from D-standard. I think 26 to 26.5 scale length would be ideal, but there aren't many out there. My current favorite metal (death-doom) guitar is the MH-1000 from ESP. The mahogany body combined with high output pickups and an EQ pedal through a Marshall is excellent. Evertune bridge makes me happy too. Greetings from SLC. Love my SG. Just got a Gibson sig LP body/neck that I’m going to be slowly piecing together with all my preferred components and electronics. I did the same with my 60’s tribute SG and it turned out great.

Hi from Newcastle, Australia! Love the Chanel. Another awesome video as usual, interesting topic. I have an early 70’s Les Paul Custom that I’ve had for years. I tune it to C & B standard and it’s a beast for the doom/stoner thing. Weighs a ton but isn’t an issue, sounds amazing especially the neck pick up. I also have a 2012 SG standard which I picked up a few years ago and is just as good but for different reasons. I play it in standard tuning, super comfy, great neck and brighter sound. For me the Les Paul wins out, just love the whole vibe of it! Cheers

I was told that a Gibson SG from the early 1980s have thicker/heavier bodies. The input jack on early 1980 SGs is on the side of the body like a Les Paul, which is interesting!

I've got something that's in-between the both: an Epiphone SC-450 Scroll. It's got a heavy mahogany body, but the accessibility slots of the SG to its 24-fret neck. Two humbuckers. Simple tone, volume control and pickup selector and a coil-split toggle. It sounds heavy and angry and handles heavy strings like a champ.

@@FuzzlordEffects Thanks! Back in 1989 it was the cheapest guitar my dad could get for my 15th birthday. I wanted a Kramer or the brandnew 36 fret Washburn - and all I got was that poor attempt of a rock guitar... that's what I thought. Unbelievable how taste changes...

Hey Jason. Jeff from Bournemouth in the UK here.
Les paul players also include the guitarists in swallow the sun, daylight dies and I guess Mike Schedit from Yob although he plays a custom guitar based on a les Paul. Also Wino from The Obsessed / St Vitus and Victor Griffin from Pentagram (he did play and SG as well)
SG players? Gaz from Cathedral did!

I've got a customized black beauty les paul I use in a sludge band. Tho it's an epiphone and not a gibson, I wouldn't trade it for anything. It feels great in hand and with 3 humbucker slots to customize and a 5 way switch the tone possibilities are endless.

Scott Kelly of Neurosis used Les Paul’s quite a bit. I don’t know what one specifically but from live clips I can definitely see it’s a Les Paul
