- The Trade Deadline was quiet for the Detroit Red Wings, but their last 3 games haven't been...and not for good reason.
Tune in as we open by discussing Steve Yzerman's one trade (Klim Kostin to San Jose) at the deadline, his thoughts on the Grand Rapids Griffins (like Berggren, who was called up, or Edvinsson, Kasper, Mazur, & others) and how they affected his decision to stand pat, on our analysis on whether he made the right decision & what's to come this offseason (4:10).

Brad 100%agree ... give the GR top prospects a chance. I have been saying this all yr. A rebuild team with ZERO rookies on it was a mistake and makes no sense given we have the #2 rated prospect pool?
There is only one prospect who's NHL ready and it's berggren. Stop with asking for anyone else. None are close. With the exception of maybe edvinnson but imo he's too soft

Stevie said at the beginning of this season as well, not to expect playoffs. Great if we get there, but chances are we won't. But the fans are all about making the playoffs no matter what, that we should've pulled a Vegas to make the big show, that Edvinsson should've been up for game -1, etc. We've had some amazing runs this season, but we're nowhere near ready for the playoffs. Our rocky November and December should've showed us this, but our amazing run through January gave some of us a little false hope.
We're not a playoff team. I love our team, but we're not there yet. Throwing Edvinsson to the wolves now won't make us a playoff team. The boys have to want it, and they've been showing these past five games now that they don't really know *what* they want. He, and Grand Rapids, are both better served with him there, and we can bring him in next season after buying out or trading Holl.

I would've rather missed the playoffs by double digits again than know they blew a 8 pt cushion. It's so bad. I also laugh at Walman getting scratched, where is that energy for Petry and Ghost when they cough it up all night? Frustrating.
For real and we only gave petry a handout contract because his dad played for the tigers. He plays awful and never gets benched. Please don't have him on the roster next year
Perron is doing his best as a leader, he just isnt enough on the ice, they had a shot of him getting a few of the boys going on the bench in the Vegas game, gave Ras a tap on the shoulder during it, that was right before the shift when he had the nice tip goal
He’s been great at sitting in the box at the worst times.

watching the games lately, even some that they won, feels like lalonde has them trying to play prevent defence in the first period and hope for a strong second and third, almost like they are playing not to lose instead of playing to win.
I can't give Stevie a pass for doing nothing at the deadline. I'm happy there was some sort of resolution with Burgers (clearing room for him), but doing nothing blue-line related was a farce. I am overall happy with the direction of the Yzerplan, but if they fall short this year of the playoffs, boy will that leave a real sour taste.
Yes, if the team has a 9 point foot in the playoff door and miss out on it, then lots of resentment will occur and deals need to be made. Especially firing the coach

If John Tortorella was the coach, he would be all over the players and the way they’re playing. I don’t understand why lalonde doesn’t call time outs during the game and I don’t think he ever called a timeout. He needs to wake these guys up someway. Larkin can’t be the savior to this team every god damn time. I agree with you brad on not having a single rookie in this lineup which is insane. Feels like holland years with all the veterans🤦♂️. I love my wings but this is the icing on the cake. I can’t wait till we have a young team on this roster.
This team has lost to San Jose, Anaheim and Arizona, and struggled to beat Chicago this season.
With a couple days break check out the Flyers Lightning game, SO Crazy! Fighting, Goals, crazy plays, John Tortorella gets kicked out half way through the first while half his old Lightning Stanley Cup Winning team is getting hammered ass drunk in upstairs, this is a must watch exciting game!!!!
I just seen a stat about Kane not being able to lead Chicago to Blackhawk’s once in his last 5 years.

Steve Yzerman messed up not trying to get Bo Horvat last year. Everyone has known that if we were ever gonna hit that next tier without a superstar we would need the equivalent of 2x Dylan Larkins and horvat would’ve been perfect. Our best hope this off season will be Sam Reinhart, but if we don’t get him idk when this team will actually elevate to the next level
Horvat isn’t worth the money he’s being paid now and certainly won’t be in years to come.
How do you know he didn't make a move for Bo Horvat? For all we know, Steve did make a move for Horvat and Horvat wasn't willing to extend with the wings.

The thing I noticed most about the Colorado game, is that they have an amazing first line. But that was about it. The rest of the team was on the same level as the Red Wings but that top 5 unit is just elite.
That said, I think that doesn't bode well for Colorado in the playoffs when they play teams with really good depth. I'm not sure I would take them over Vancouver, Edmonton, or Vegas in a 7 game series.

I blame Lalonde for the Arizona loss for two reasons. Starting the worn out Lyon instead of Remer, knowing we were playing Vegas the next night and putting the non playmaker Veleno on the top line between Kane and DeBrincat. I no longer see comments from fans saying the Kane is the most talented Red Wing.
My response to some of the takes going around. I do want to say that there's nothing wrong with being upset at losing, the losing streak, and the current standings position. I'm upset. But.
The fact that the Wings have even been in contention for the WC for so much of this year is a freaking huge improvement over just last year, much less the previous 5. Remember when the sane among us said we knew this isn't YET a playoff team? Stop with the end of the world BS. Lyon hasn't suddenly turned into a disaster and should be tossed - no one can stop 50+ SOG, 40+ SOG, or even 30+ SOG every night, especially when getting no support from his offense and defense. Yzerman isn't suddenly an embarrassment for saying the team has depth during an intermission interview, nor did he make the wrong move not being a buyer when we are not a contender even if we manage to claw back into a WC spot. Calm the eff down. Enjoy that we're no longer a cellar dwelling disaster & that we're a step closer to contention.
As much as I love burger I don’t think he should have gotten the call up because of his waiver exemption, Aston Reece would be the best option
He's got 3 more games (i think) before he cannot be sent back down without clearing waivers. So he'll likely be back in GR after next game

Crystal ball question: If Yzerman knew in advance the Wings would lose 5 at this time would his deadline strategy have been different? I'd suggest yeah it would have if he was fully sold on them making the playoffs this year.
I wonder how bad the Wings would be if Seider got injured, he is the only one that might have a bigger impact than Larkin

How was Reimer bad against Vegas? He did allow 4 goals, but his goals saved above expected was 0.95 (stat is from Moneypuck).
Detroit sent a message to the rest of the league with that AZ game. Infuriatingly it was the wrong message.

Kane is good in all, but you kinda get the vibes that he's a me first, individual player. he certainly is not going to take anyone off the puck and create scoring opportunities
We have no choice but to insert both edvinsson and johansson fulltime at the same time next season as well as Berggren and possibly kasper or mazur ... can’t keep holding off the kids forever. Should have gradually inserted edvinsson this year and Berggren and a few next season . We now have no choice but to insert some of the kids with cheap contracts
Fabbri holl petry need to go I don’t care if we have to eat some salary but they need to be gone

We need a coach. Newsy delegates leadership to the room, we need a coach to motivate to a consistent level so when our captain goes down we don't shit the bed. It's obvious that in each one of our bad stretches we lose Larkin for a big part and then the team looks disorganized and unmotivated. Say what you want about guys like torts but that guy knows how to get the most out of his guys every night. Superstar, one time call up, he treats it all the same. There is no way this team goes through as many nose dives under a coach like that.
WE CAN BLAME THIS NOSE DIVE ON THE PATCH/JERSEY

Kuznetsov would have been a good pickup, Wings need all the help they can get at center, could have played him with Kane and Debrincat
I feel the overall age of the defense is to old and run down. They have alot of players that have the wisdom and seen stuff but they dont have enough skill left to sustain a steady defence all season long, nor the skill to keep up with younger better players
Vegas never got caught putting a player on ltir, but the Leafs did leaving Reaves on ltir and there were no consequences!

IF Detroit wants to make the playoffs and more in the future, they need a new coach! BRING BACK MIKE BABCOCK!!! Hockey is 80% skill and 20% emotion and effort. Lalonde may be a good assistant coach, but he inspires NO ONE! Look at what Dan Campbell has done with the Lions, a coach that can fire up the team is critical for this team. The Redwings have been outshot nearly EVERY game this year, both losses and wins. I am glad they finally gave Alex Lyon the chance to be the number one goalie. But, no goalie can get outshot 10 to 20 goals per game and still keep a good goals against average. Babcock has the "seal of approval' of Scotty Bowman and a great track record coaching the Wings. PLEASE!!! Stevie Y, hear my plea and bring back Babcock before it's too late and this playoff run ends badly!
We don't get into the playoffs this year or next , it's time to move on Steve . Same thing happened last year . We got punked by Ottawa and the season was over . This year it was Florida that punked us and we haven't won a game since and we traded our toughest played. Nice Stevie , nice ...
