They should redesign the whole Mall like that! It would bring lots of fans and tourists
I'd definitely go lol
For a short amount of time
Curt Wakeman or maybe make it an “amusement park” where you can shop at star court not much of a amusement park but you can shop at stranger things stores and get ST merch
The Starcourt decorations have been removed. I’m pretty sure it’s back to normal now. It’s too late.
Yass that would be awesome
Im betting the mall is letting them use this for free in hopes it attracts tourists, Im also betting All the burger king and everything in there will remain after filming and may even become operational as I imagine it would attract lots of business.
ViperTechnologies I think retro themed malls as a whole should be picked up nationwide.
Id love to see that, 80s era styles should make a come back.
Didn't they also film the movie chopping mall there, bc it looks exaclty like in the movie?
I grew up around this mall and would love to see it completely revived but it on life support and even with this filming there it won't bring it back. I would imagine in a few years it may even be torn down
oh i forgot to mention that food court section of mall is only a wing, about about 25% of mall, the other 75% is very dead
So cool! Especially to see after watching Stranger Things season 3...
It was really awesome to see a Jazzercise studio in the show. My mom used to be a Jazzercise instructor back in the 80's. When I saw this in the show, I was cracking up and I had to show my mom, she was laughing too. She told me that she would do the same warmups that guy did in the episode. And wore the same outfits the girls were wearing. 😅
I was in that mall 2 weeks ago. They have like 10 or 11 stores open there. Changing demographics in Duluth area have played a big role. Mall of Ga and sugarloaf mills killed that mall. This mall was very popular in 80’s, 90’s and early 00’s. This was the place to hang out back in the day
Yep! Sad to see it slowly die.
Awesome job. Reminds me how much the world had changed, since I was a kid, back in the 80's.
I love that Eastern Airlines poster.
That must have felt awesome. What a throwback. I’m so jealous
honestly, I was pretty damn nervous because I thought security was gonna roll up on me and I was ready to run at any moment...well limp away. Bad leg be damned! haha
@@NekoArc Haha even better... you can pretend it's the Russians after you
Great video. As a kid of the 80s/90s, loved the nostalgia here. I’m also a classic gamer. Loved this. Loved ST3. I would have done anything to see that set. Great job!
Thank you!
They saved a shit ton using an existing dying mall.
yeah but it's a shame that most of the set is being trashed now
Damn! I was born in 2002 and I’m getting hit with some sorta nostalgia!! Epic video👌👌👌
Late 90’s aesthetic almost, and yeah 02 was the shit
Lol shit and I was born very early 94. Imagine how I feel lol
Leo,the heartbreak Kid same
Lmao, same same
Very well done! I worked in several malls during the 1980's and early 90's. I remember these stores and the 80's art deco revival style that was everywhere. #80s #NewWave #Deco #Mall
David Z thank you kindly!
This is so cool. I’m a biggg fan of Stranger Things and can’t wait for season 3!
I want it to be the 80s so bad 😞
So will this be a major setting in season 3? That’s awesome!
I used to frequent all the time back in the 80s and 90s what's awesome is how the Walden book store is in the exact same space that waldenbooks used to occupy
Actually, it was B. Dalton Books in the 80s and 90s. Waldenbooks was in the newer wing with Parisian.
Notice how the car is still there.
Not sure why I haven't seen this before!
Yes, they are real arcade machines in the Time Out, A friend of mine owns them and the production company rented them from him for the show. I am also a collector in the Atlanta area. If you have come to Southern Fried Gaming Expo or Dragon Con (and visited the arcade there), you have played some of my games.
I'll have to try to get to SFGE next time around so we can possibly chat sometime!
This helps cause I’m currently building the whole Starcourt mall in fortnite creative and this is a very in depth walkthrough of the place thx
I've got more footage coming soon!
Erika NekoArc nice 🙂I’ll be tuned in
That red carpet tho...and the computer store reminds me of Mr Robot
Thanks to the local news, everyone knows about it and now there's too many people watching to get in, including security. Oh well, great video! I may go find some other locations. Did you also find the prop bus stop outside? Upper level entrance near the old Ruby Tuesday, just outside. It features a "Hawkins public transit" sign.
I'll have to take a look next time I'm out that way!
Just watched this just now... after S3.. This was obviously before filming... how the hell did you get in...? Could you go now and see??
I walked in! It's in the middle of being taken down so that ship has sailed
Loving this! I live 30 minutes (in Chapel Hill NC) from where the Duffer brothers grew up in Durham NC and 15 mins from Jordan lake that's mentioned in the 3rd season. In season 2 they called it lake Jordan.
glad you enjoyed it!
I would like to see the scoops ahoy! And I think they should redesign the mall like that?! Bc in this days the mall look like modern and not look like this anymore😔
Time Out oddly was still around in the late 00s, but when I was 3 in 99 I loved that place. Jeppers Creepers however scared me badly, I still don’t know why. Time Out however was very cool but around 2005 Chuck E. Cheese and Dave And Busters took over completely which I think ran out Time Out for good...especially D&B (Honestly D&B is like TimeOut).
This is the way Polo Park Mall in Winnipeg looked until 2008 :(
Where’s scoops
Starcourt mall is actually filmed in a dying mall, Gwinnett place mall. The mall’s operator, Moonbeam Capital Investments is struggling.
This is so awesome!! Good job on the footage! 👌🏽👏🏽👏🏽👏🏽👏🏽
What did you think of season 3? I'm an 80's kid and I'm kind of stuck there in some ways so I really enjoyed seeing the mall
I'm still trying to catch up on S2 😅
Good video. Thanks for filming.
That was an actual Waldenbook store in the 90’s. So cool
that's so cool to find out!
It was B. Dalton Books, not Waldenbooks.
It might of been a B. Dalton at one point but my sister worked there as a Waldenbooks.
It's entirely possible they moved it and that's my memory of it. I remember it last when it was in the larger space with the Walden Kids section of the store that had the blue slide entrance. I seem to recall it was close to Parisian and a big shoe store, upstairs in the newer wing that's now closed. I was just happy there were two bookstores where I could sit and read Calvin and Hobbes and Garfield while my mom shopped!
THIS CHANNEL IS FREAKING AWESOME
Awesome work covering the second floor!
I'm working on starcourtmall.com right now, I'll have to add the links to these videos on there and I'm still going to feature the pics you sent me too.
I wonder if he knows this where stranger things season 3 was filmed at
Gwinnett Place Mall in Gwinnett County GA about 30 45 minutes Northeast of Atlanta
Sam goodie was the best back then
Did you take a Delorean to that mall or something? I must say I’ve seen stranger things going on in my time, but this takes the cake!
Y2Kr4SHM4N it was one heck of a trip!
However, we did not use the millennial era terms like 'synthwave, vaporwave or aethetics'. It was just the norm and we never thought those days would end or that this amazing time would be celebrated or even disappear. Pre-internet days were definitely more fun.
David Z true it was called New Wave or Synchpop back then and the color scheme was inspired by the Memphis Group.
Ok...how the FUCK were you able to get in WHILE Filming was still in session? I had seen another video of yours I think but my god security was clearly bad that day. Im glad I saw none of this before the season aired. It didn't even occur to me to look it up until afterwards.
Wow! This has even more footage of it than Ace's Adventures!
Yeah I've been documenting the set (and the mall) for a very long time. It's just a matter of time before I release a full-length coverage cut of the set
Wow the set work there is amazing, I can't wait to see it on the show. I wonder if those arcade machines are covered to protect them from a leaking roof?
I wouldn't be surprised, honestly
1985/1986 baby here
86 myself!
@@NekoArc Born in 1980 myself, went to the Mall of Memphis near our house almost weekly in the 80's and early 90's. That mall was torn down in 2002 I think, and is just a vacant lot currently.
NGL they should have opened it to the public for promotion for Stranger Things 3, and as a way to get business in the mall.
I’m making this in Fortnite and this video helped sooo much
Please gimme your island code when you're finished so I can check it out!
@@NekoArc okay😁
For fun comparison and reference, #Crossgates Mall Promo Video (1984), that I worked in. Fun starts at 5:29 czcams.com/video/9Nm9WHBp3Lg/video.htmlfrom 84 to 86.
Malls have looked pretty much the same since the mid 80s. Not much has changed.
Heru- deshet not really, malls used to be more like theme parks back then with many stores designed to fit the aesthetic of their brand and it was a hub of teen culture and excitement. Nowadays many stores are closing and lower performance malls are shutting down or being recycled for other purposes besides retail.
When you see malls in their former glory you realise why a lot of malls declined. They ripped out every piece of aesthetic awesomeness and stripped them to bare white operating theatres in the 90s/early 00s and they lost their appeal. Of course other factors were involved but who wouldn’t want to shop in malls with plants, colours, fountains, cool lighting
GRA-EME D blame the minimalism trend after the 80s and the rise of the internet. They wanted people to have an experience back then so they would design stores to fit their brand. Memphis design was also big back then so hence geometric shapes and neon.
Believe me, they are real cabs. I just wanna know what was the name of the store with the C64 neons, and the Atari and Coleco stuff.
I'll take a look though my photos when I've got the chance

Why wouldn't you shoot the cinema marquee? That would give us some direction on the influence of the season. There was already a retro arcade in season 2, fyi.
Two movies I could make out were, D.A.R.Y.L and Return to Oz.

1ST!!!! DAMNIT!!! COOL VIDEO !!! ERIKA GREAT WORK!!! LATER 🐍..SNAKE!!
Is this where stranger things 3 was filmed?
Yep!
Erika NekoArc how were you allowed in it? Weren’t they shooting season 3 at that time ?
@@flordiaz5273 I walked in is what I did :p
And this video was shot between the first main shoot and the second main shoot, so nobody but security and regular mall people were there
Erika NekoArc oh that’s really cool! Thanks for replying :)
they should leave the set there that would be cool
Later did you know that was for stranger things 😏
Yep! It was pretty much a race between me and other youtubers to get the first real coverage of the areas between filmings
I live two minutes away, how did init know about this?
I remember commenting here a year ago, but I can't find the comment. I wonder if it got deleted, but I have a question...
That font at the bottom left corner
Its LAZER84 isn't it?
That it is
Can you explain in detail how you got in? To the second floor that is
Director's secret 😉
Erika NekoArc haha but for real I live in the area and want to know how I can get in
Unfortunately, I've heard from a few sources that they have security watching both floors from within the sets again. You could try your luck bribing security tho
Erika NekoArc well that stinks. Still gonna try so wish me luck!
