- The Fall of the Mall Ep. #1- Gwinnett Place Mall Duluth, GA
Join us as we take a in-depth look into this large dying mall located in a suburb north of Atlanta. This mall has a walled off wing from public access, a closed off wing transformed for filming The Starcourt Mall scenes for Stranger Things Season 3, and a dead body was found in the former food court last year.

I’m a local so I know how this mall was. This mall was poppin. This was the mall that everyone and their families would be every weekends. It truly was sad to see year by year it going downhill.
This was one of the most popular malls in Atlanta the 80's and 90's. Then they built the Mall of Georgia and this mall pretty much died after that. I heard soon they'll be tearing this mall down and replacing it with some condo complex in it's place....
This is sad... In the 80s and 90s this was the place to go to. Moonbeam is a horrible company that kills dying malls
In Malmo we had that to Caroli city in 80s it was so popular and then suddendly 2010 som many people just stopped to go there
q455frodomar why did this mall “die”? Did people stop going?
Mall of Georgia is why this Mall died.
@@THEDUDEABlDES that's lowkey racist
@@Math-xt6kh it's the truth
I grew up going to this mall. I will always remember eating at Chick-fil-A on the second floor and shopping at Davison’s and Rich’s. Thank you for documenting what’s left of it.
I moved to Georgia/Pleasant Hill when I was a kid. The mall wasn't even built: acres and acres of dirt. I remember all the major phases of the Mall. It smelled of Reganomics, sounded like Duran Duran, and in 1996, I made a last walk through of the place. She didn't age well. Sad...
So screwed up what happened with that girl there. I was there last year in December walking by the food court a week or two before she was found. I smelled something real bad and was walking around trying to find what it was but I had a feeling I wasn't smelling something out of a trashcan. I went upstairs to see if I could find it and I could smell it from upstairs. I wondered why the place was open with a smell that bad. They should've boarded off the whole food court after they closed everything but I heard they were looking for new businesses to rent the property. Gwinnett County and the G.B.I. both tried to keep this from getting out to the public too. Very sad story.
yeah it sucks. I wish someone could have talked to her about that guy she was seeing.
@@dox1842 the cops did not want anybody to know that she was found dead there. They didn't tell anybody about it until two weeks later after they couldn't find out who she was. She was seen with her eyes badly bruised or something when she went to go pick up her paycheck and at the hotels she was staying at with that guy too. They called the police about it a couple times. The tattoo artist who put the tattoo on her face saw it too and tried to talk her out of getting that face tattoo. So sad that the girl is working a retail job at Perimeter Mall then she ends up being found dead in that empty restaurant that had been closed for a very long time. At least two weeks of not being found too. They should've closed off that whole section of the food court with a barricade. I went to look at the bathrooms by that old Subway and the men's bathroom was trashed. Oh but now let's turn that whole section into a nice movie set now after a girl has been found dead there. Just rubs me the wrong way.
ugh. i hope you arent traumatized. that would freak me out! peace out.
shits sick man RIP to her
How sad. I live 15 minutes from this mall and watched it be built. I live by the Mall of Georgia now which should have never been built. They should have given this mall a facelift instead. Now the Mall of Georgia is very slowly dwindling. Typical poor county planning. Great video! Brings back old memories.
One thing that is killing Mall of Georgia is there is no easy way to get from the suburbs south of I-85 to the Mall of Georgia because of all those ridiculous stop lights and the maze you have to go through when going through Lawrenceville on the way to Mall of Georgia. If they build something similar to Ronald Reagan pkwy that went from the Snellville/Loganville area to the Mall of Georgia then that mall would get a lot of business from people in those suburbs. It’s ridiculous how Hwy 124 ends abruptly and you have to suffer through that maze of turns and stop lights to get to I-85. Shame on Gwinnett county and the state of Georgia for their nonexistent planning.
@@nole8923 if you take Scenic Hwy from Snellville to Jackson Street and turn left Jackson turns into Buford Drive and that takes you right to the Mall of Georgia. You don’t need to go through the screwed up area of Lawrenceville. Go my way and it’s a straight shot. No turns.
20 years ago I used to shop there all the time. It was hard to find a parking space during the Christmas shopping season. Now it’s just sad
And now this was the main setting of Stranger Things 3! A follow up video showing what they changed would be cool!
If you watch between 5:25 and 5:45 in the video that's the part of the mall converted for Stranger Things.
@@RetailWorld So that's why there's so many fences! Thanks! :)
With Stranger Things season 3 dropping next week, that website of yours is going to skyrocket in popularity, lol. This video might too, I dunno.
This mall was the place to be when I moved to Atlanta in 1997. The mall was absolutely packed, at christmas time you had trouble moving around. This was also true for all of the out parcels and Pleasant Hill the road that mall is on. Pleasant Hill is still relatively busy but the mall and the out parcels are absolutely dead.
It is sad to see indeed. If you check out our other video of Gwinnett Place, we visit it on a Friday night when most malls would be packed it was almost empty of customers.
Mike Hipp agreed. This mall used to be vibrant, but now it is basically dead. Honestly, it doesn't seem like Pleasant Hill has changed much (there is still a lot of traffic) but it's really sad what happened to this mall. North Point and Mall of GA definitely had a big part in reducing customers
We moved to the area in 2003, and I shopped more at this mall than the MOG. It was nice and happening. I noticed stores leaving this mall by the droves in 2008 when the big recession hit. Looking at this now is just depressing. You did an excellent job with this.
The late 90s renovation removed some fantastic fountains, including a two-story fountain with waterfalls around a fancy stairway. They took it out to install plain stairs going up and down. Boring. I don't understand spending tons of money to "downsize" or make things "plain" ? ?
I lived there before mall was built. Used to be a big mobile home park and took them 3.5 years to complete it. That was the mall of region and the area around it exploded with growth. Now that mall is dead the retail around and near it is beginning its death spiral. So sad and so many memories.
SO THEY KICKED OUT THE POOR, TO BUILD A MALL?
@@MoneyComethToshelia my understanding was the developer paid each person well above the market value for each plot of land so everyone that was there made a killing and was easily able to afford to move elsewhere. Now that was 1980 in a much different time and corporate environment. Today they would just be kicked out and told tough luck.
@@MrJestyler thanks for the info
i used to go to this mall
back in 2005 07 it was still doing good
2:00 LMAO you can see all the donut's hoonigans have been doing with their cars!
my boy bladed on here
HELLO THERE
Thank you for all the time and research you put into this video!
did some shopping there every now and then its sad the way it is now
I was wondering if anyone made a video about this place. When I moved to Georgia as a kid in 2000 this mall still was a major thing but in the next few years with Discover Mills and Mall of Georgia I remember going to it less and less. Being back in the area as an adult it definitely appears to be long dead.
After watching over the premiere a couple times, I personally think you could've gone without the 1st 1:11 of footage, the footage before the drone footage. Your narration is good, and simply needs time for you to find your flow. Very flew slips of the tongue. which is admirable. You'll simply need time and practice with your editing software and voice delivery. When it comes to your shots in the video, you could draw the shots out a smidge longer, just by a second or two per shot. Overall, you've got yourself a diamond in the rough here, and I'm excited to watch it shine.
lts so sad to see this once beautiful mall to be dead. However, l believe investers can still easily revive it. They can have some renovations and then have some small events, celebrations and etc. and start to invite new businesses with some incentives....like 6 months free rents, helping with loan and ......
l am sure businesses will apprecite starting a new business again
Great video. Great commentary. Can't wait for your next mall video. Thanks for filming.
I grew up in Gwinnett County Gwinnett Place Mall was a frequently visited place up until Mall of Georgia opened in early 2000's
Mall of Georgia opened in 1999
@@christfollower7315 ... soo early 2000s.
The Mega Mart actually has amazing dumplings! I went there recently.
In its day, this was the mall to go to, and had unbelievably good out parcels. Now it’s truly frightening.
This mall used to be great! I worked there for about a year in 1999-2000, and it was a pretty busy place.
I worked for three different placed at GPM... it's sad to see it in such disarray now. Sign of the times, I guess. :(
YEP! everything that once brought HAPPINESS to life has been replaced. like Denny's, Shoney's big boy, downtown shopping, then they built MALLS and now the malls are gone! life was so much better and happier before cell phones, computers, and AMAZON
I "grew up" in this mall in the 80's and early 90's.
I’m surprised it wasn’t made into a tourist attraction for Stranger Things. Moonbeam is bad news for dying malls. They just let them rot.
I know how some of these people feel.as a child I loved the mall.it really felt like that place full of magic and wonder where you could get away from life for awhile.the first place where I held a position and began to build a relationship.before Facebook and Instagram this is where you met and the place to see and be.anyone who made or began to believe and become something that has ever meant anything.it was to place to gather.a friend.an old friend.to meet old and make new ones alike.like or dislike these.this is the very first rst place I made those memories.my first paycheck, that girl that was meant for me I thought when things seemed so simple.where the only cares I had was that good look head to toe.here’s to the future.some will stand the test of time.some unfortunately will not.but the memories and that legacy of those footprints and footsteps will remain intact with me.
Great video (especially since this is the first in the series?)...Did you shoot this using a gimbal? Some of the shots definitely feel like they were done using one and I'm surprised you were able to get away with that in a Moonbeam property. If not, steady hands!
Thanks! No I didn't use a gimbal, my cell phone camera has video stabilization built into it. I also used some creative ways to shoot out in the open with all of the security that walks this mall.
Nice drone shots! Great music choices! You made the right choice for your channel name and also the series name! This will probably help you attain views and subscribers faster than some other retail youtubers. Will you do a video explaining your inspirations? We all know Dan Bell, Anthony, Sal and others... but I am curious who else you follow and draw ideas from?
Hello! Love the video. What’s the song that starts playing at around 1:00 minute or so in? What’s it called? I like it!
Hi Keegan, it's waterfront dining feat. Dan Mason ダン·メイソン - big trouble in little paradise
Retail World Great video. Brings back memories. I loved the music myself, I’ve been scouring iTunes to find this song or the song it sampled. No luck though.
Ah the good old days... I know someone died here but why is it blocked off for the public..? It should be open to get a tour from th mall from stranger things...
Netflix wants to keep it blocked off for whatever reason.
Jorge Arechiga who died and what happened
@@brooklynnamoretv4250 the girls name was silling man. RIP
Oh in ‘85 I met kid called Steve there, I still think about what happened to him
Loved the aereal views.
Thank you, that was some drone footage we took.
Wow I used to go here quite a lot back in the day. This is strange to see
I used to go here in 2005/2006 (there was a QZAR laser tag as well within a mile of this mall), this place was still pretty packed. What year would anyone say was the massive decline? I didn't expect this mall to be this dead this quickly.
It really started declining after Moonbeam purchased it from Simon.
@@RetailWorld I'm reading around 2013 that happened? Wow not that long ago. Most dead malls i feel like began in the early/mid 00s. Anyway thanks for the reply, cool channel
Good video, but some creative feedback - you have a formula: open a shot, pan quickly, cut to another shot, repeat. It's dizzy-making. Take your time panning your shots and don't cut so quickly from one shot to the next. There's no sense of direction or continuity and makes the video difficult to follow. The content is fascinating, the presentation just needs polish.
Thanks for watching and thank you for the feedback on the video. I'm new to shooting this types of videos so I'm still working on my videography skills and my editing skills.
Yes. Some CZcamsrs make walking videos or mall videos with a whole lot of excessive panning around and quick cutting that makes the video not as enjoyable as it might otherwise be.
THE SAME THING HAPPENED IN BIRMINGHAM, ALL THE MALLS BECAME A GHOST TOWN, STAYED THAT WAY FOR YEARS, AND NOW THEY ARE ALL GONE! TORN DOWN... THESE MALLS WERE THRIVING, SO SAD TO SEE THEM ALL GONE!
Interesting video. One small nitpick though. It was "Davisons", not "Davidsons".
Okay okay it's a dying mall
WITH A GOD DAMN PORTAL LASER UNDER IT
What was the name and artist of this song in the beginning by the way great video
Hello, it's Waterfront Dining feat. Dan Mason ダン·メイソン - big trouble in little paradise. It's on the album Diners Club.
Discover Mills anchor is Bass Pro shop so that doesn't really count. You don't buy a men's three piece suit at Bass Pro shop.
A dead body. Hm.
Music in the beginning?
Well, at least now I know where to go if I want to avoid any zombies.
You should do Manchester center fresno
it use to have so many good store like the brand champion 😭
I liked this mall BEFORE Stranger Things.
*takes off hipster beret*
Dont forget North Point Mall was Built in 1994 in Alphretta about 20 min west of GPMall
Doesn't appear there is much open now. I never seen a Sears storefront look like that
Dennis W Is it getting any better? Im thinking about moving to the US and it really would be a bummer if the mall is closed when i get there
stranger things season 3
Yep. This mall is done. I did get my COVID shots there though.
What a shame.....certain people......
Ive been to this mall for years and never seen this part of the mall what part is it at 9:23
That is the walled off former Parisian/Belk wing of the mall.
@@RetailWorld Oh wow its cool how you got back there
Ah, the notorious Moonbeam Capital Group...
Stranger things: 😏 not yet
Technically the news said it was a security guard that found the body.
I think its all Mall of ga and Sugarloaf mills (discovery mills) fult that this mall is dead i was born in 2009 and even when is was 2-3
years old it was still filled with stores even my mom says it was but because its so dead me and my mom just go to sugarloaf mills don't judge me but we still do go to the mall just macy's and victoria scecret
NO FUCKING WAY! Cold as Ice?
I would love to go shop here, beats mall of America. To many people. Rather shop when it’s less crowded
I have a snarky video on this mall!
at least stranger things got to it
Did he say ‘fruitation’ instead of ‘fruition’?
Haha it was a small slip up while reading our script. Good catch!
Anyone else here for star court?
ST3 anyone is there anyone who is a fan of ST
The people who made Stranger Things fixed it up and made it a mall for Stranger Things
Place has really gone downhill now.
I can't damn believe this. I wanted to go here when i started driving and now......theres nothing
It's even worse now, this was taken 2 years ago. Over half of the mall is completely closed off now.
Not dead!
It's pretty close to it! Even more stores have closed since this footage was taken.
Wow. Dan Bell says hi. Have to thumbs down you for ripping off yeah??
